Just watched Aliens last night, could see a few scenes where picture was soft and oversharpened, but for the rest, I thought it looked fantastic. It was so clear, I picked up a a goof with a prop towards the end when Hicks is in the pod and his IV bag has an expiration date for 1987.

The hole has been fixed, as far back as the 2003 2-disc QUADRILOGY DVD, I think? Along with the marks on the observation window, when Ripley slams the chair against it. Screw Cameron and his “vision”. LEAVE THE FILMS ALONE, PLEASE? I’m dreading what he’ll be doing to his best film (imo) - THE TERMINATOR (1984).

Hi John, I've now watched both your Aliens videos after watching Aliens 4K myself, followed by a quick comparison with the bluray. I had a great time with the 4k and couldn't believe the sharpness of it. Btw, Aliens is one of my all-time favourite movies, so i was really looking forward to this. I've seen other reviews and comments about how it's been "ruined," but i don't agree. Keep up the great videos John. 👍👍

I really liked the transfer on both Alien & Aliens. The motion also looks smoother on Aliens with great clarity and detail. I'm very happy with it.

I'm a bit mixed on the Aliens 4K myself. Apart from a few parts where the sharpening and detraining made the image look bit weird, in motion it looked good. However, it doesn't really look like a film made in 1986 anymore. It will probably still be my go to version from now on because I only like to keep one copy of the film and, unlike my copy of the old Blu-Ray, the 4K has all of the special features on it.

Awesome upload as always John😉🤣👍, was looking forward to your thoughts as of the conflicting reviews id heard about. I haven't watched many if I'm honest. I love both movies and like you I see Alien as a horror, but Aliens as more a action/sci-fi. I will definitely be picking up Alien. Think I'll wait for Aliens to hopefully get in a sale one day. Your the only person I have seen that keeps the reciepts like I do (and keeps titles for years unwatched) - I feel normal now.Alien looks great - almost too new but not in a fake way, just brand new.

Just watched aliens today. It looked fantastic to me. I personally didn't find Cameron's adjustments of this new scan a distraction at all. The only thing for was atmos felt a bit flat for me. But at same time its an older movie. Alien is incredible. Its my favourite. That 4k is the perfect representation of that incredible movie.

I don't have Atmos myself but I could hear a definite uptick on my speakers but interesting to hear the Atmos wasn't fully immersive 🤔👍 yeah as much as I liked Aliens, Alien is my favourite of the 2 for me as well David 🤩🤩👌👌 thanks again mate 😊😊👍👍

The soundtrack to alien has a whole backstop in itself....jerry goldsmith hated the fact a cue from a film years earlier was used along with your accurate telling of the other shining cue. I have unreleased goldsmith cues and a lot of them I agree didn't fit, but wow, alien has a great score and a bright light when retrospectively looking at this film. Love your stuff...excelsior sir

Would love to interview you sometime if you are up for that. Yes, the score.....during editing, the decision was made to drop certain cues and replace them with some new ones but also strangely a previous goldsmith score from years back...again a horror. It's documented on the laserdisk special edition and on KZread. I think they wanted a different tone, but goldsmith hated it probably because he could only see the visuals in his head for the film it was intended for. Lol. Excelsior sir and thankyou.

I watched the aliens 4k a few days ago. I thought it looked really good, and I’d known all about the negativity around it. However I thought the sound was really flat, no ooomph to it at at all. I had to check my sub hadn’t been accidentally turned off! The scenes with lots of wind and rain on lv426 just sounded front heavy with zero bass. I have a 5.1.2 set up and other discs sound amazing!

That's a shame about the sound Tom, my soundbar and sub are out of action at the moment so I have my TV speakers as reference, it sounded really wide and bassy on there but it's no comparison to an atmos set up 🤔😵‍💫 thanks for this info Tom 😁😁👍👍

You are correct regarding the sound. They missed the boat with a poor Atmos mix.

I suspect the piece of music you're referring to is 'Dies Irae' the funeral dirge John. It gets even spookier if you look in to it, I tried to find out it's origin a few years back and couldn't as some sources put it somewhere around the 13thC and equally others claim it to be far older than that still. The picture quality on Aliens is just insane! I'll never get why people hate on this one. All the details that are now visible, that's what 4k is about for me anyways. But what really blew my mind was the new Atmos track. So much more immersiveness and the bass when the dropship goes down to LV-426 😱 stellar release for me 👍🏻

Hi John Great review mate I've yet to see these classics on 4k. Still got the blu ray box set of the alien films and find the picture quality to be very good. Alien has always looked the best for me. Aliens has always looked a bit less in quality compared to the original (excellent film though) This is probably because it was filmed in a 1.85 ratio so not quite has good has the original which was film in the wider 2.35 ratio. Like the original Terminator which was also filmed in the 1.85 ratio this also looks not quite as good as Terminator 2 which again was filmed in the much wider 2.35 ratio. Alien and aliens are for me still the best in the alien series of films. Cheers John. 😊😊

So checked out the audio on the blu ray and it's 5.1 DTS master audio and 4.1 Dolby surround (on the Theatrical cut only) so no atmos, but I'm hearing the atmos isn't that good so you might not be missing out on too much mate 🤔🤩👍

@@MondoChelloveckMovies Tricky to single out one but it’s the old ones for me particulary if they were originally shot on 65mm or 70mm. Spartacus caused my jaw to drop when I first put it on, that’s probaby the best i’ve seen. Others of note, Lawrence of Arabia, Ten Commandments, Vertigo, Dark Knight, Top Gun Maverick, Jaws, Apartment, Casablanca, Dunkirk, Gladiator, The Fugitive, Pearl, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs. All in 4k, great movies with stunning pictures.

I've been reading and watching so much controversy about the aliens 4k. I had to try it out, the first 2 alien films are both in my top 5 films of all time so it's a real big deal to me about watching it the best way possible. I can honestly say watching aliens 4k was an absolute blast. I will never get rid of my quadrilogy boxset which is a grail to my collection but il only ever watch the 4k disc for alien and aliens........ Mostly

Were the 2 horrendously amateurish back projection scenes in Aliens fixed in the new version? Those are the scene when the drop ship crashes behind Ripley and the other where the alien queens eggsack is exploding behind Ripley? Hi David, those scenes don't seem to be "fixed" at all!! They stand out even more on the 4k!! I don't mind that in a way mate 🤔🤩 one thing I did notice that was when Bishop is on the deck and he grabs Newt you didn't see the glaring hole on the ground where he's sticking through, so that's been fixed possibly 🤔 hmmm that's a good spot there David!! Never thought that before 🤩🤩👍👍

The so called directors cut of Alien is shorter than the theatrical cut. Ridley Scott considers the theatrical cut of Alien his preferred version and I couldn't agree with him more.

It's funny how that is George 🤔🤩 I do prefer the "directors cut" as I like that extra scene myself, but its not a game changer if its not there mate 🤔🤩👍

I just watched the Alien 4k on the big screen with Alien day re-release. Its the only proper way to see it really.

@@MondoChelloveckMovies it was just Alien though I wish both. The new 4k picture and surround sound was just spectacular, especially the sound mix which I guess was mono back in the day. My screening was sold out!

@@MondoChelloveckMovies Yeah I think it's reasonable to suggest that if James Cameron presented the original unaltered version of Aliens (i.e. before he A.I. DNR'd it up the wazoo) as well in the package then I would have less complaints.

@JohnDavidSullivan I agree that Cameron should have had both options available and everyone would have been happy, I do get the feeling that Cameron is quite "my way or the highway" so he probably will never accept something as easy as that unfortunately John 🥴🥴🤩👍

I have no comments on quality of releases, but I’ve always thought of ”Aliens” as cheesy action; lots of explosions, noisy and those silly marines are not believable for one second. Entertaining, yes, but not a work of art like the first one. That one holds up so many years later and will continue to do so, I think.

The 4k just looks much better. I saw details that the blu ray never could.

Film preservation is done for with all these comments praising the butchering of this film. It seems people, especially James Cameron, want a 45 year old film to look like it was shot on a smartphone. It makes a travesty of the work that specialists like Sony and Arrow in particular do to skillfully restore a film when all Disney have done is outsource it, shove the blu-ray through digital processing and call it a day. Its a good film but will people be so happy to pay 4K UHD prices for up scaled blu-rays when it becomes the norm?

I agree that I don't want the film restorers that do amazing things with getting the most out of an original negatives to be replaced by A.I Nick 👍👍 its an art form that is highly specialised 👏👏 personally I think Cameron and maybe Disney could take this route but the boutique labels putting out old horror cult movies will always stay away from it.....hopefully 🤞🤞🤩🤩 Cheers for commenting Nick 😁😁👍👍

I think both aliens and abyss look and sound great,yeh I would have loved a film restoration but this was never happening with Cameron. Got mine from usa and the 2nd batch don't have stickers. True lies in the other hand was awful.

I've heard that the 4k of The Abyss is great but that True Lies is the lowest of them, yeah but I think apart from The Terminator and the redo of Terminator 2, I think there isn't any other movies of his to "remaster" Ian 🤔 oh yeah.......Piranha II 😵‍💫😵‍💫🤣🤣👍👍

Alien is probably the greatest film ever made. Hard to believe it was made in 1979

I agree it's such a well made movie!! It can't be topped in the space horror genre!! I would love to stick it on for a youngster and ask them what year it was from!! Bet non would believe it was 1979 🤯🤯🤩🤩👍👍

I just brought my copy from HMV today... I was disappointed by the image... I sat with my Blu-ray disc (2012) and watch my copy of the 4K Ultra HD and it's Blu-ray both discs have DNR'd to DEATH I will be taking my copy back tomorrow with the repciept and exchange for something else. I'm a DIE HARD fan of ALIENS but a disc pressed in 2012 still looks better then a disc pressed in 2024 is saying something ALIEN released by FOX looks stunning I can't lie... Thank GOD Fox released ALIEN, PREDATOR & PREDATOR 2 before this Disney take over. But I don't think it's Disney's fault on this occasion as James Cameron finalised this 4K... It's easy to tell a GOOD 4K restoration from their original camera negatives in 2024 but ALIENS... You know what the DEATH of physical media is? DNR What cancer to FILM DNR has become..... Your a good fellow, I love watching your reviews but what your old Blu-ray after watching this waxed 2024 pressed disc... £24.99 many fans are on the same page about this release... I tried to avoid their hate, but I now feel I'm in the same boat

Ya probs best boycotting any Cameron films in the future. I would have preferred a true film restoration myself, but I'm OK with this release, it's like another edition and I can choose depending on my mood.

I don't like what was done to Aliens on 4k. Worse than the grain removal is the sharpening. It looks unnatural. (I looks like that "Sharpen" filter in photo editing software.) It's not even consistent. Hair strands and reflected light in eyes looks overly crisp and bright compared to the rest of the face. It a shame this happened. But It's not about what we want; it's about James Cameron wants. We are just the little people who made him a billionaire.

We will never change Cameron as he has a "vision" he will always go to unfortunately so we are at his mercy when it comes to his films Gary 🤔 I find the blu ray to be more consistent if you wanted it that way Gary, it's a definite thing with Cameron that he loves messing around with the lastest tech! The movie looks fine in 4K. I saw details I have never seen before. I understand why Cameron wanted to show this to the world. If you don’t like it don’t watch it :)

I absolutely love both movies. The 4k of both are fantastic. The Aliens 4K is great. I don't know why everyone complains. Get used to it people. You're never going to get just a plain 4k transfer. Also the reason you can hear the same music is that the music composed to fit the film, was felt, by the producers, and director, not ro fit the movie. So they kept some of the music used to track the film (ie show it to test audiences and preparing effects) and ditched a lot of the composers original material for the film.

Cheers for watching mate 🤩🤩👍👍 yeah Aliens got loads of flak but I do think that if A.I had been kept a "secret" then I don't think there would be too many complaints 🤔😵‍💫🤣 I've heard (in the comments) similar stories about the soundtrack and why certain things were added and dropped, quite fascinating mate 🤩🤩👍👍

The Abyss and Aliens look superb on my 12ft wide screen.Anyone who thinks otherwise should really look at the settings they have on their TV/projector.
