It's really amazing how Reallusion makes it look like you will spend $300 for iClone/Character Creator. By the time you get done with 3DXChange, Motion Live, the Facial Profile, the Rokoko Profile, Smartsuit Pro II, iPhone, and everything else you need, you'll be lucky to get away with under $7,000. And that doesn't even include a high end computer. And you will soon find that you'll need two Rokoko suits to facilitate character interaction, which is very tricky with one.

The pipeline: Daz + Metapipe + Maya 2023 + Metahuman + Unreal engine UE5.4 wll cost only 180$. About mocap, i think that video to mocap looks finally now the less expensive and the best approach for simple animations. Rocooco (2 cameras) is 240$ per year. With AI, the progress are so fast...NVidia also works about solutions for video to mocap.

Finally a realistic video. Not everything is "perfect" like with every other video youtube that I've seen. Everyone has been like "this is magic! **speaking with whisper: With some cleanup**. Not a single video showing actual cleanup and a screwed up mocap. The only cleanup I saw was someone with a slight leaning hip (laugh). The "turn off everything in your home" and "clear out all metal devices" is completely unrealistic. Not to mention no other device requires this. That seems to be a suite-only issue.

Hey Keith, I’m so sorry for you!! Yes, I know this feeling. Over time I learned that great Mocap suits cost much more than the Rokoko and still need to be cleaned up. But I have one tip for you. Get the app metal detector and check your whole recording space including floor, walls and ceiling. It should be max around 40-50 but should not vary more than 2-4 in your shooting area. If you have more fluctuation, try to find another shooting area. For me the only solution is going outside into a park since my whole apartment seems to be full of metal parts. It’s mainly build in my floor. It’s not so convenient to go outside, but it helped a lot

People have to do their homework, YES you will need to do some clean up work, but it gets you 85% of the way there, and YES you will have to have a good understanding of the software you are using. Some people think it will just work like magic out of the box, there is work needed to be done but the Rokoko suit can save you hours and even days of work. I can mo cap a scene in around 30 mins then a couple hours clean up work which would have taken a couple of weeks or more animating by hand. Would i recommend the Rokoko smart suit pro, 100% YES!

Lesson to retain from this experience is :" Never buy a product that is marketed massively with ads everywhere" generally a company that makes a quality product doesn't need to market it because its quality will speak itself. Best example is cars, do you see ads everywhere about Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley ..etc ? No, of course because everyone knows that whatever car of theirs you will buy will be a dope.

I think the future is Rokoko Mocap Suit -like solution combined with cameras. I don't think you would actually need physical sensors as long as the suit has clear markings that cameras are able to focus clearly enough. Of course, doing that real-time requires quite a lot processing power to combine multiple camera feeds with the suit measurements.

However, Mocap clean up is another task that you have to take no matter which suit you are using. body parts intersection cant be recognized in any 3d package. iclone never ending addons is a joke! It might sound easy workflow for beginners at the beginning, but it wont take you long to realize that all the addons that they are charging you for are actually "FREE" in most of the other 3d packages! In fact, you can get away using Daz for base mesh character and re-rig it in another package, again for "FREE". Sorry for going on and on about iclone. The trick is to only use the treadmill filter for recording, it gives you amazingly clean data. It's just that the locomotion filter is estimating your location on your foot position in the software, which creates rather unrealistic motion in the current Rokoko studio version, but if you just take the untouched treadmill data and clean up the feet and key the hip position yourself, the suit is pretty amazing I must say

Oh man, thank you so much for this much needed video. Like, I'm pretty sure it's still fun as hell to experiment with all this. But if you're an indie game developer, you can't just lower your expectations: you'll have to butcher the quality of your game and add another year to the development deadline. Which is not fun at all.

Your video is interesting, However you forget to mentioned something which make the different for real. EVERY mocap suit or Tech won't give you a perfect motion Data, that why animators exist. You can work on a AAA Games Studio or a VFX Industry it will be the same. Animators will retarget and clean the Mocap based on the reference and on the animation principals. I'm not using Rokoko, but definitely this suit is LESS expensive that studio are using. Overall your video is nice and well produced ;)

Why wouldn’t the hands mess up when touching the head? You’re expecting real-time physics w/mocap right out of the box. Not a fan of the upselling on their part but I think you were a bit harsh. These products are for professionals and you’re treating it like a toy. This feels like someone new to 3D upset that they can’t just materialize their imagination immediately.

The suit was 2500 + 1500 for the gloves + 600 for face = 4600. Plus they told me I should try the virtual production add on (+ vive tracker) and another wifi I router (+ 1500) = 6100 that I spend. I can imagine if you are an animator that it works great for you. Amazing information Moon. Brilliant and honest appraisal of the issues. I love rokoko too but the idea you can’t capture sitting down mocap if your feet are slightly off the ground (and all the other issues you mention) is not as clear as it should be. There is a free unreal project that uses around 8 vive trackers instead, which I will be trying at some point and combining this with rokoko gloves (as they can be used independently from main system - which is impressive) I also have iclone with all the things you mention - but I am curious to see if I can bypass all the workflow you mention with vive trackers, rokoko gloves and live link face - all streaming real-time into unreal.....I can find a link for the project if it’s useful to you (the person who created it is very generous to release it for free) - and you want to buy a few more trackers (-:

Get Blender and learn modelling/rigging -> free Screw character creator etc. But yeah, welcome to reality. There is a reason why mocap in CGI of movies is a job for a whole team in big productions, even with optical systems. And honetly I am thankful that not every average Joe can create art to the highest degree. Where would that leave real experts of the industry that have worked for decades and mastered all its quirks? My tip: Get Blender for free, create a python script for the mocap cleanup (at least jittering can be solved by simply averaging movements) and try embedding this in your workflow. Might save you some time.
