I ordered the Mac Studio when it came out, and hemmed/hawed/paced about for almost two months deciding on a display. Even took delivery of a 4K 32" ASUS ProArt, but never actually opened the box. I knew that the cost of the ASD would soon be forgotten, but it would bug me, maybe subconsciously, about reading 5K text on a 4K display, every single time I turned it on. I sent the unopened ProArt back, and bought the ASD. I've forgotten the price as I thought I would, and love turning everything on every morning. The display on my 2015 iMac still looks perfect to me, and as I'm older than you any improved display tech in the future wouldn't do me any good anyway; this is my last display (my 2007, 24" iMac in the basement still looks good, still works, although not as sharp as the 5K modern stuff). Nice reminiscent video!

This is hilarious because I’m literally in exactly the same situation, as I have a ProArt unopened in my corridor which I’m probably going to return for the ASD. I also have an Eizo CS range monitor I’m trying out now, as I really wanted a monitor with decent colour rendering for grading, but I’m feeling disappointed about having to get speakers and a camera, as I love playing my music - plus it takes 10s to turn on.

I was deciding on buying a 4K high refresh rate or a ASD for programming and casual gaming. I watched almost all videos about ASD on KZread and still couldn’t decide what to choose. The biggest problem was that I couldn’t find a place where to see ASD in person and blindly buying such a pricey piece of tech without an option to turn it back in my country didn’t sound like a good plan. Recently I saw it while on a vacation in another country and it was mind blowing. Honestly no video can show how it really looks. 5K, glossy screen, vibrant colours. It’s like a giant floating IPad. I understood that that’s what I want. So my advice is go and see it yourself and then decide.

I have the 4K LG 24 inch Ultrafine monitor which is made for Mac. I run it at native resolution of 1920x1080 where four pixels are combined into a single virtual pixel to be displayed. It is a great display at a reasonable cost. This display is of the same quality of display on my 2019 27 inch iMac.

I’ve seen a KZread video where the caster did some research online and found someone who had looked at many monitors for coupling to Mac OS. The secret to a clear vision is the number of pixels per inch that align with the pixels on Apple 5K monitors. One needs in the area of 220 ppi on 5K displays or 110 ppi on 4K displays. There are a few monitors that meet this criteria: some in the 27” and 24” screen sizes.

  • @fty-ys4ni

Yeah people often overlook this. They’re usually too fixed on resolution and forget the importance of pixel density.

  • @dotinsideacircle

    @dotinsideacircle

    15 күн бұрын

@@fty-ys4ni @timgurr1876 Yes, a 5K display with 220 ppi will be indistinguishable in terms of sharpness compared to the Apple Studio Display. However, are you sure about 4K 110 ppi? From what I understand, a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) with 110 PPI has a lower pixel density compared to the 5K display therefore, while the ppi matches in a distribution ratio, the pixels are more spread out, resulting in a less sharp image when viewed from the same distance. A 27 4K monitor needs to be scaled to be usable, but takes a performance hit.

I broke down and copped a Studio Display during a Best Buy sale last November, and I’ve been spoiled since. I had an LG Ultrawide 34” UHD monitor that served me well for over five years, but having the Apple display goes great with my M1 Max MacBook Pro, with the monitor tethered to my Caldigit TS4, another fall acquisition. As a low vision user, the sharpness and brightness of the Retina display has been a big positive. While I have a pair of reference studio monitors that sit on either side of the Studio Display, I actually once used both the monitors and the built-in speakers while watching a movie, and it was a nice experience. Nothing is forever, but I can’t see myself getting pulled away from the Studio Monitor anytime soon.

I'm rocking an old Thunderbolt display that I've got connected to my M1 MBP. It's fine, but it's starting to show some wear and tear, especially around the cable (I got it second hand) and it can sometimes come unplugged, meaning I've got to jiggle the cable around to get it working again. I'm looking at the Studio Display and the BenQ PD3200U. I really like the idea of speakers being built in as my desk at home is very, VERY small (maybe 2' deep and a little less than 4' across). I really just want there to be fewer cables on my desk because frankly, I'm getting tired of it. I'm leaning heavily toward the Studio Display.

I don't have a studio display but the i9 2020 iMac and I use two Samsung 27" 4K displays for a 3 monitor set up. I wouldn't want to use them as a primary but as two additional they work great and as I don't tend to move the productivity windows from them and they are always attached I don't get all that much window scale issues. Think those two monitors were £350 each use USB C, have used them for over 3 years now and one of the reasons I havent moved over to apple silicon is that it pains me to spend more than my 5k iMac especially to get 64gb or ram then have to pay another £1500 for the display which is identical to the display I have in my 2020 iMac and the iMac still works great so I can get some more use out of it.

My current desktop setup: M3 Pro MacBook Pro, Studio Display (non height adjustable stand) and the CalDigit Element hub.. Additionally a 2018 12.9" iPad Pro w/Magic Keyboard and with Sidecar technology, I can utilize all three displays (iPad Pro, Studio Display & 14" M3 Pro MBP display). For sound, like you Jerry, I enjoy the Studio Display speakers but I do utilize sound output from my HomePod stereo pair speakers as well - nice because they are wireless and with macOS - it is very easy to switch audio output sources. Personally, I MUCH prefer the 5K sharpness of the Studio Display. Pity it is not an OLED display but I foresee an update years away utilizing the "soon to be released" new double OLED display tech rumored to debut with the iPad Pro refresh design this spring. Of course, if that hypothetical Studio Display with OLED tech is ever made and released, the price would probably increase by about $1000 dollars - so I won't hold my breath. Grin. Finally, with my setup - what is NOT to like. Oh, one more thing. the Studio Display webcam is "OK" and easy to use. If I wish a much better webcam, I just use my iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Belkin MagSafe iPhone mount attached to my Studio Display. PS .. The really nice thing about the Apple hardware ecosystem is that their products are of such high quality that they "last forever" which means that I can add various pieces over time and build my own home ecosystem. For example, the HomePod stereo pair & the iPad Pro were purchased in 2018, the Studio Display purchased two years ago and the M3 Pro MBP just a few months ago.

Is 4k or 5k the correct question? Is'nt it more about resolution (ppi/dpi) and how the rendering is working? - So far I know, Apple does not scale fonts. Those are rendered to the screen resulotion set. If you let scale up the monitor by setting a lower screen resolution as the monitor offers, then you will see some interpolation. But probably only with a lens. So, it was just an AD vid.

Samsung 28 inch 4K is still my secondary screen. At 100% scaling it is about perfect at ~150ppi. 5K at 28 inch is perfect, at 24inch it is too small and 30 inches is too large (though I'd take it at 5K wide with 2160p height but then you are at 21:9 again). 27 inches might just scrape by, 200ppi, 125% scaling for 150ppi effective, it would be heaven. But only at 10 bit and 90Hz min + VESA, not spending big to not have that at least.

I myself bought an ultra wide OLED (1440p for exact scaling) and it's has annoying "features" like dimming when I want large surfaces with bright elements or shitty speakers or fan noise to cool the monitor down. Furthermore these monitors seem to take forever to wake up from standby mode.

I just about bought a dell 27” 4K monitor for photoshop. But after watching reviews they pointed out the size of text and how small it was . So now you’re left with changing the resolution to 1440 to increase the size of the text and other tools in photoshop. So my thinking is to give up and buy apples studio display , as I think it will have larger crisper text and tools when you’re using photoshop. I think ? The bad news is I have a brand new PC gaining rig , 4090 gpu , i9 etc , and I was hoping to connect several monitors. My oled 34” as a gaming monitor, and two Apple studios for photo editing . I think this is going to create problems in windows 11 , at least I think . I have been researching using a studio monitor with windows and apparently there’s no control over calibration and brightness without some software that’s not available anymore (at least I think that’s true ) . So anyways , now if I want to use the studio monitor I’m stuck buying a Mac mini . Gotta win the lottery here soon lol 😂

As a system administrator, much of my work involves text-based tasks in a terminal. I primarily use a Macbook Air M1 connected to a 27-inch UDH (3840x2160) external monitor. For me, text clarity is crucial. While a 27-inch 5k display would be ideal, I've found a workaround by setting my Mac to upscale from 2560x1440 to 5120x2880, and then downscale it to 3840x2160 to fit the monitor. This approach significantly improves text readability compared to native 1440p on a 27-inch screen. In my view, the Apple Studio Display is not cost-effective, offering only a 20% improvement in text clarity for an 80% higher price compared to an average 27" 4k monitor. Just sharing my opinion.

I got the standard model of the Studio Display (Tilt only model) for $1299 from Best Buy during Presidents Day. No regrets! I tried 3 different 4K models (Dell S3221QS, Dell S2722QC, and the INNOCN 27M2V) before getting the Studio Display and the Dell models would sometimes flicker. The INNOCN model didn't flicker on me, but 4K resolution really hurt my eyes after awhile. The Studio Display, however, is well-built and has a clear and sharp display out of the box. Unlike the 4K monitors, the Studio Display has great sound for a monitor, so I might not even get computer speakers or a soundbar for it. So, I happy with the Studio Display and the INNOCN monitor will go to my Acer Predator 300 PC. The 32" Dell (w/ Curved Panel) will hook up to my ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo and the 27" Dell monitor will probably hook up to my 2015 MacBook Pro. Anyway... Great video!

My display is the Dell 32 4K UHD Gaming Monitor - G3223Q. The text on my 4K 32" looks sharp. I have a 4K Dell 27" at work and I can't tell much difference between my 32". The 32 4K Dell is ESA Display HDR 600 and DCI-P3 95%, with a smooth 144hz refresh rate. I can use it to game with my MacBook Pro M2, or my custom built gaming PC. I don't get Apple! They market promotion on their MacBooks but then you loose that spec if you want to use a larger screen made by Apple, except for their crazy expensive monitor costing $4K+. If Apple introduced a 5K OLED monitor with 120hz - 144hz refresh rate, added back HDMI (like they did with the MacBooks) that was under $1,300 that could be a compelling product that I would consider as a replacement to my Dell 4K monitor. MacBook users don't always want to be confined to 16" inch Apple displays. At this point, my Dell 4K 32" monitor seems to be enough for me. I don't need built in speakers. Bluetooth AudioEngine speakers sound great for desktop use, and my Logitech 1080p Steamcam, although not as sharp as a 4k webcam, looks good enough for me.

I’m not gettin a new monitor until it’s high refresh and glossy OLED. I can’t wait the 32” 4K 240hz OLED from spectrum. It’s unfortunate that spectrum is the ONLY company that will make that configuration in something that looks clean and modern instead of some gaudy gamer design. Beyond 4K, resolution is the least important thing to me than all the other display qualities. Also, I could never live with a monitor that only allows one input, especially at that price point. The studio display is vastly too limiting

Displays are fabricated in large sheets rather than individually. The size/resolution of monitors and TVs is therefore inextricably linked. E.g, When 4K TVs became popular, 1080p displays became incredibly cheap. 27” 5k displays are a tiny niche of total display manufacturing, which is why there have only been 2 non-Apple monitors with that resolution. A TV size with 5k resolution is not impossible, but the improbability of it being manufactured at a reasonable cost makes it basically impossible.

It is really too bad that Apple crippled the font rendering engine in macOS. In the past macOS had pretty good font rendering on non retina displays, like every other OS these days still have. But then Apple decided that they don’t care about non-retina displays anymore and removed the font smoothing from macOS. And thanks to that fonts now look terrible on every non-retina resolution. Both Windows and Linux are doing a much better job today.

I ended up getting a 27” LG 4K monitor for $300 that is actually pretty good. It beats my pre-Retina 27” iMac with it’s Retina-like doubling up of pixels but at the same 1080p resolution. BUT it’s not a Studio Display…the LG’s speakers suck, the USB hub is useless...it only runs at USB 2.0 speeds if the cable from the laptop is also sending video…hello??? So I use the DPI port instead. It feels like the plastic that it is and the huge external power supply is ridiculous. It’s a bargain at $300 for the image quality, but for me it just comes down to price. If I had an extra $1300 to spend, I’d be viewing this on a S.D. I know people rag on Apple about pricing but my experience since the System 8 days is that Apple just builds better hardware. The displays are better, the trackpads are better, the battery life is better and so on and so on.

The biggest problem I have is: Where is the competition? Where are the OLEDs with better overall brightness? Or mini-LEDs with enough dimming zones so that blooming isn't a problem? Where are all the 5k and 32-inch monitors that aren't curved or ultra-wide or just offer a good mix of high refresh rate, peak brightness and color accuracy? I mean, I think the Apple Studio Display is overpriced for its IPS panel. Not a single IPS panel should cost over 1,000 euros, especially if it's only 27 inches. It's simply not good enough in terms of contrast and black level. Then there's the added cost of the stands and the poor port selection. But I'm looking for a display that fits what I'm looking for, and either I have to go for cheating and try my luck or have to go way more expensive like with the Asus Pro type line and their 6k mini LEDs. its nuts. And I would say even the gamer market has gotten better monitors over the years. But they either lack good overall brightness without huge fluctuations in homogenized screen brightness. Or they're curved or they're noisy and poorly calibrated and so on. There have always been flaws. So yes, it's sad that there's no real competition for Mac users. Still, I think anyone who buys a Studio or MBP can afford a similarly priced monitor if they be better. But like always. No one steps into the field and shows that you can have similar quality and speaker but also give a better display for the money. And I think it’s possible. But no one tries to do 5k and 6k other than unreliable companies like dough.

It’s exhausting to continually see videos acting aghast at the cost of Apple products. And then people pile on. The thing is Apple has always, since day 1, operated as a provider of premium computing products and services. Their stuff costs more based on several factors. It’s like airlines. I gave this video a dislike because it is disingenuous. As someone who briefly tried the Apple Studio Display, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is the best display on the market and has no comparison - especially with MacOS. The *only* disadvantage it has is costs. But retailers have placed this display on markdown over the past few months and it can be found for an extremely expensive - but not as expensive as it was - price. Now that Microsoft is focused on AI and has a roadmap to introduce spyware into Windows 11, I'm seriously contemplating returning to Mac and trying to make it my daily driver. I'm typing this on a M2 Mac Mini right now and I would like to get back to owning a Mac Studio again. I'll probably wait for the next version to get released and start the process all over again. But, in the interim, it is best to be honest with viewers. There is NO OTHER MONITOR that outperforms the Studio Display. If people can't afford to upgrade, so be it.
