The fact that her husband is a GP and it didn’t occur to him sooner illustrates that there needs to be a nationwide programme to educate all GPs. I also think all women over 40 should be sent some information by default with the full list of symptoms etc so they are informed to go to the GP if/when they need to.

@@naheed03 I should have been clearer. Yes the training on women's health is poor and does discriminate against women. I agree with you there. But I don't blame one random bloke for not fully understanding how women's bodies work as they only experience what it is to have a male body. If it's not in his training he can't be blamed. I'm currently battling with my own GP surgery because the female GP's aren't even up to date on HRT facts and meds. This is a massive issue and not just about one clueless male GP being sexist.

I can’t thank Dr Newson’s organisation for helping me through a difficult perimenopause. I knew I was perimenopausal at 43 and my GP wouldn’t prescribe HRT. My GP has been and continues to be unsupportive and unhelpful. Newson Health have been helpful, supportive and available. I have never once been belittled or misunderstood by them and I am eternally gratful for all the staff’s support.

I had a friend who was also treated as mentally unwell for years and years and it was only when she slipped and fell and broke her pelvis, that they then said that she has osteoporosis caused by the menopause, and confirmed that she'd had and finished the menopause. She'd gone through such an awful time with anxiety and depression and had to take time off work with stress, but no one ever mentioned the menopause despite her being in her early 50s and no previous history of mental health issues.

My experience is that these were the worst parts of peri and menopause Not feeling like yourself anxious paranoid insecure insomnia brain fog withdrawn luckily not depressed but definitely disconnected Had I not had witnessed my sister's experience I would have thought it was mental illness. This happened to me too! It took my GP almost a year to realise why I was like that, it was horrendous I was so anxious angry suicidal it was vile, my GP apologised and said there isn’t enough training on menopause about the mental health side of it. I was never anxious before this. Please please tell this lady to watch for when she nears the end as I felt the same on my HRT when I came to the end of my menopause and couldn’t work out why, I stopped my HRT and the anxiety stopped in 48 hours. The GP hadn’t picked this up even though I had told them over and over and over they had referred me for talking therapy but there was nothing to talk about.

why did her GP husband watch her go on anti depressants? Surely her symptoms were quite clearly perimenopause? This is what happens to most women anytime from late 30's to early 50's at some level. I remember an utter sense of doom at times. It was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Society should be more aware of perimenopause. It's horrible.

This was my thought too. It sounds like the anti depressants prescribed for her initial anxiety numbed her and took all her joy. Then she was on a whole cocktail of drugs whilst she was sectioned. I’d be curious to know when she stopped taking the anti depressants. Shocking story as all she needed for her initial symptoms was HRT. So pleased she got the right help in the end, came through this and is now brave enough to share her story to help others.

I was offered antidepressants even though I knew I wasn’t depressed (suffered depression years ago), was told I was too young to be going through the peri menopause even though there is a heavy family history in my family, bloods were fine! Male doctor told me my testosterone was in the range Dr Newsons clinic said I was at the bottom end. Fast forward on a high does of oestrogen, coil, testosterone and walking loads up mountains and back to weight training. Doctors need to listen to the women and not go by the blood test! Would highly recommend Dr Newson’s clinic. Suicide rates in women increase in their 40’s as we are not being listened to too!

Very odd that her own husband didnt apparently realise - even though he's a doctor. It's hard to know one's feelings may not be one's OWN feelings - but instead something caused by your body and nothing to do with you (ie the person inside that body). The thing I find really scary as well is that They decided to section her for talking about suicide!!!! I've certainly realised one doesn't dare talk about suicide as an option in case some well-meaning little idiot starts shouting "Sectioned....sectioned......they need mental health care" and you're there thoroughly puzzled as to why apparently no-one can talk about suicide in a Society that is as terrible as ours is - because WE are deemed to be at fault somehow for even entertaining the thought as to whether we wish to keep on trying to live in such an awful society. It is an awful society - there's lying/stealing/wars/appalling state of the NHS/etc/etc and we are supposed to "shut up and carry on" - rather than make a rational decision that we will only put up with a certain amount of bad stuff in our Society and we reserve the option to leave if it gets even worse.

That woman was married to a Doctor and he didn’t even recognise the symptoms that she could’ve been going through the menopause.. so what about his patients women who were suffering through the menopause and go in to see him what chance did they have ? I went through the menopause and felt exactly the same I felt like my life was over.. I went from being a confident go-getter positive woman to a nobody in my head…. I hated myself and I hated life!! I knew it might be the menopause so I started researching before I went to see the doctor so I went with everything in my hand printed out and prepared for what I was going to say… luckily for me the listened and I was put on HRT. And let me tell you within three weeks my whole outlook changed…. i’m back to being a positive happy person that I always was and I’m loving life!!
