    it’s the fact that black people were teased for the colour of their skin, their lips, their body. back when I was in school, I was teased for my lips because they weren’t normal they were ‘big’ or were similar to ‘duck lips’. but today other races are tanning their skin to look darker, getting lip and butt injections. and getting braids. I was called medusa in school because of my long black braids.

    So what I’m hearing from you is that black woman can’t and aren’t allowed to wear blonde wigs because it’s a white person hair color and black people can’t straighten their hair because it’s a white hair style. This goes two ways lady

  • @Jess-hf9me

    @Jess-hf9me

    Straight hair isn't owned by white people so how is it a "white girl hairstyle"? There are various races with straight hair. When I flat iron my God given hair, it doesn't look or feel anything like white peoples hair. It looks and feels like my own hair straightened. Even when black women wear weaves and wigs, that hair does not come from Europe. Alot of it comes from Asian countries particularly India. As far as blonde hair, there are even black people born with blonde hair. Yes it's rare but it exists even in Africa. However, given the history of this country and its beauty standards I'm sure at some point the blonde ideal influenced other cultures. I think dark hair is much more attractive but now days even when black women wear blonde hair, it looks absolutely NOTHING like white women's hair. We as black women have very diverse looks and skin tones. EVERY hair shade can work on a black woman depending on what her skin tone is. Box braids are directly from our culture and there are still black women getting discriminated against for our cultural hairstyles. It isn't fair others can wear it to be cool without the discrimination and not even pay homage to where it comes from.I am not personally offended when others wear them but I do understand why some are.

    I am a african american and Nigerian, a democrat and for the most part liberal. But i disagree with yours and that professor's point of view. Although I acknowledge white supremacy, white privilege, discrimination and the problems we are dealing with still due to slavery, i do believe people have become way to sensitive and in their feelings. Many times, we scream cultural appropriation for a culture when the native culture seems it as appreciation. If i go to mexico and buy a sombrero, am i guilty of appropriation. If my friend goes to nigeria who is white or filipino and buys native attire, is it cultural appropriation? No, its not. If the person likes the style, let them wear it. We get too in our feelings about this when there are bigger things to solve.

    The buying of a Sombrero hat and/or other native attire from the people who are from those very culture are not appropriation. Appropriation is something that is adopted by those who have no part in the creation or dissemination or continuation of a particular item. The Sombrero hat financially enriches the Mexican human who sells it to you. The native attire economically enriches the native people who sell it to you. What people don't realise about braids is that people of African descent enslaved as part of the Atlantic Slave trade, wore their hair in braids through all those decades/centuries. Enslaved women in South America braided their hair in a pattern that was a map of escape routes from the areas where they were enslaved to places where they would be free. No colonizer is entitled to this. It is sacrilege.

    When you started talking abt how the black race, mostly black Americans because of the history you guys have gone thru, has boundaries I immediately thought about the “n” word issue. Black peoples have continually vocalized that it’s preferred that non-colored people not say the word, yet they do all the time and have even normalized it in certain spaces. But as a Haitian who grew up in America I understand why it’s important to gatekeep such a profound word within the community, black people around the world don’t have the same mindset we do hence why that woman in the audience said the boundaries don’t seem so rigid

You're all a bunch of whiney emotional toddlers with huge chip on your shoulders and the bggest victimhood mentality on the face of the earth. It's like you all go around perpetually feeling inadequate so you have to blame others for it and expect them to pussy foot around your feelings...the entitlment, arrogance and external locus of control, alloplastic defenses and projecting that self loathing onto everyone else and you wonder why people don't like you? It's probably the most disdainful character traits anyone can posses all wrapped up into one very unhappy human being looking for things to be angry about and people to take it out on. No wonder you all feel so controlled and helpless because you give your power away to every person you choose to be offended by. Instead of blaiming everyone else for your own feelings try taking responsibilty for your own reactions and choice to feel that way...and then choose not to be offended and work on your issues to be a happier, healthier more likeable human being.

I’m biracial myself so my opinion might be influenced by that 😅 but personally I myself have had more black experience- that’s because my white father was adopted into a black family. So he never really had a white experience/influence, and having a black raised white man for a father and a black raised black woman for a mother I’ve only had that black experience/influence. I’m only saying this to say that we don’t know how she was raised, I mean that in the sense of we don’t know if she’s had both white and black experience growing up. But that’s just me, stay safe everybody 🫶🏽

    I think it’s not gonna front I have thought about this and at first I use to have a issue with it then I changed my stance and I adding have an issue because I see it as just hair I think for myself that they should address the issues you mentioned such as the children at school or people having to change their hair for a job or for a sport. That is an issue and I see that as problematic. I can understand if someone’s hair is untamed but if their hair is braided or in an Afro state that is not an issue and people shouldn’t make it one so that’s what need to be called out. And I do understand what you mentioned as people who make money off these things and taking the credit away I understand that for sure. And I thank you for shedding light on this also I’m not the one if I was on there I’m gonna be heard that’s one thing I don’t play about. A lot of people like to play the ignorance role of, I didn't know, because they are too lazy to research, they are afraid the will find the truth and can't use what they've made, or just don't care. That is the whole reason for copyright laws! It is a protection for the creator.

    @@PrincesSindywhen you wear them, go walk in front of the black little girls who have to live in this society, watching women like you who have "socially acceptable hair" steal a style they are still getting called out of school for, told they are lesser than for, experience raism for. Flaunt those braids in every store window, in front of every person of race to show society how much you don't care about racism, you're privileged! It's not your problem. Besides, you look so good in them. Wear them to every event and cherish how you, a white woman, can live so vicariously and yet experience no consequence. I hope you revel in appreciating something that is so sacred and very real to the hearts of many African American women. Besides, who cares if you're playing a hand in racial politics? Enjoy those braids. After all, it's just a hairstyle.

    If you would stop saying "us" and "they", everything would be fine. You should start seeing the people on this earth as ONE group. Don't seperate them by cultures, colors or religion. There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. It is all an appreciation and a sign, that we are getting closer and closer together.

    Thanks for sharing this. You did well in that environment. It was unfair and biased. Dr. Phil in my opinion is appropriating a therapist and a TV host. He is not conducting himself in the manner of a therapist. If he was he wouldn't have been combative with his questions and response. He hasn't attempted to get to resolution; which therapist do. Neither parties have gained new insight or respect after this show. I wouldn't pay him to be a peer mediator for a daycare let alone an adult.

    Okay so I'm white so genuine question: how is it (for example) Kim Kardashian's fault that people thought that she created the corn braids? I understand the problem with seeing that and letting it slide without explaining where the braids come from, but how is it inherently wrong to do it? What if you're not even famous? How is it my fault that some people might praise me but not praise black people for wearing said braids?

    She’s saying because the people who have practiced their races cultures beauty standards are ridiculed for it and given less opportunities as well as being discriminated against because of showing their cultures practices it should not be done by another race. She’s saying the fact that other races practice a different races culture and gain popularity as well as income for emulating that same culture or even the stereotypes for that culture is just insult to injury. It’s like as if a German lady took up Jewish culture went viral online gaining money off it then Germans are still trying to carry out Hitlers will. It’s just inappropriate if you’re aware of what’s going on in the world and are socially aware.

    I feel you sis. Culture appropriation is real and our community has been through a lot since slavery and the introduction of racism. If one has never experienced the hate, stolen identity, ripped ideas and people profiting from others' blood, sweat and tears then they must not tell us to take these things lightly. This Amala must just stick to her ''white'' gene and leave ours alone. She is so insensitive and nauseating, pretending that these issues dont exist and must go back to her uncle Phil to get a cheque because it seems like she was super desperate for one. She is an insult to the black community. Thankyou to our professor who schooled them because they're pretending including their Dr. Phil. Keep n keepin' on sis.
