I was lured into a cage at their country estate

(with subtitle) I was left alone to explore in a 'cage' at a country estate. A stunning greenhouse/'she shed' leads to a vibrant garden in a 'cage', which has a cottage garden flair but also with a meticulously structured layout, reminiscent of a walled garden. This is the Lonesome Oak Gardens, part of the Open Gardens WNY program.

I was wondering about that too. Are deer able to wander freely in some places in the us- why not fence the whole garden. In New Zealand they are a pest and shot, although some are farmed

@@suepercy8390I believe that in your country many of your pest animals were brought from other parts of the world. In New York State US the white-tailed deer are native and you can’t just kill them all. They fenced the part of the garden that they wanted to keep separate from the deer. Hope that helps.

@@suepercy8390Fencing the whole garden would be terribly expensive. In my state, at some times of the year, hunters are given licenses to shoot deer t reduce the population, but the state is very strict on who, where and when this hunting can take place. They also want to be careful in residential areas to avoid any accidents.

Yes, deer pressure is very high in upstate NY, I guess it is a solution out of necessity(for having a garden).

@@rosemama9995. I take 6 ft bamboo stakes and stick them in the ground at the outskirts of my garden then run 3 rows of fishing line around the whole thing. When the deer feel the line they are spooked. I also have “Daisy” s mannequin that sits in a garden chair near my flowers. Deer don’t like her.

I love the formal design with so many native species. I’m really just learning about the importance of native species in helping our declining insect and bird populations (thanks to Doug Tallamy), and am looking for ways to incorporate more of them in my own small garden. Kudos to this inspiring gardener!

Such an interesting garden, Jay - it feels like a hybrid of a European formal garden and a relaxed American garden with an excellent protective border from the deer.
