Really interesting video - I backpacked through Iran in 2016 and received nothing but friendship and respect from everyone I met, including an imam I shared a compartment with on a night train. Fast forward to 2018 and I spent two years teaching English in Vietnam - again, if anything being an American made me a bit of a celebrity - everyone wanted to talk to me and was super hospitable. As Americans, we could definitely learn a thing or two from these people.

I learned that in Amsterdam in 1984. After 40 years of the "ugly American" tourists most of the indigenous folk were only tolerant of the drunk frat boys who came through. I was given a huge compliment by being invited to dinner by the proprietor of the small hotel where I stayed. He said typically he would never invite an American but because I asked serious questions and listened to their answers and we had civil discourse he was making an exception!

I applaude you. However, this is not the same. I am a Brit and consider Brits, Dutch and e.g. most Americans as having MANY cultural similarities. The gap is relatively small. We have loads in common. Once you get into the middle East etc we have a far wider gap to cross. We have to show and develop respect and understanding together. It's much harder. I like learning about both cultures and individuals. I have/do so am not just preaching. Not getting at you.

  • @TyczH

@nickthorp6361 LOL, try to get invited to a Dutch household for dinner as a foreigner and especially Brit or American. We like you on political level due to our similarities. However British and American aren't high on our likable tourist lists. That being said, even as a Dutch myself it would be quite hard and a lot of relation building to get invited to someone's home. Believe me, this is hard. The main reason is we like to keep to ourselves, we are friendly, we will even try to help you (only when you ask though). So getting invited to a Dutch household is not something I, as a Dutch, consider something easy.

@TyczH I haven't been a tourist. Have worked with (very reputable) Dutch companies and a few times a year driven around all of NL for nearly 20 years. Been to some (many even) Dutch family/work get-togethers and social things. Am not bragging so will stop. Not my point. Us good Brits also keep ourselves to ourselves. So am very humbled to be included and sometimes don't attend as it's best for us both. We are neighbours so we should understand each other. At least a bit.

I got abducted in East Timor. Walking down the street alone, at night, big stupid. Big black SUV pulls up fast, two big guys jump out and signal that I better get in the bloody car. Now. I'm tripping, I figure this is how you end up in a LiveLeak video as we pull up to a house far into the jungle. I get taken into an nearly empty room with a table and a couple chairs. The big dudes go and guard the door and I'm alone in there for like an hour. A car pulls up and I'm thinking this is it, this is the big shot and now we're getting LiveLeak'ed. The door opens and two well dressed men walk in with a huge box of takeout and treats! Turns out they're professors or something, and their bodyguards told them they found this random kid just wondering around so I got "friendship kidnapped" and taken back to their place because they thought I was lonely and in danger. We chowed down and talked about some pretty deep world politics stuff (which felt kinda sketchy. I'm a marine conservationist not a poly-sci student!) and they let me sleep on the couch.

They look up to the American economy and still see America as a land of opportunity. People from Vietnam have been some of the nicest people I have ever met.

Spot on when you said "the people are not the same as their government". I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland and I remember reading that the Iranian Government back in 1981 renamed the street that the British Embassy was on in Tehran from Winston Churchill Street to Bobby Sands Street after the IRA man who died in the Maze Prison in 1981 while on hunger strike. So the British Embassy had to either use that title in their official address or drop it - which of course they did. But it always struck me as rather humorous in a dark way. It is called Bobby Sands Street to this day. I have only heard good reports from people I know who've travelled through Iran en route overland to India. Very hospitable and kind people as you mentioned.

8:46 100% True, just when you visit some country as tourist, find something about that place.. I'm tired of (mainly americans) complaining on Reddit: "People are not smiling back on me on street" and it is not long time ago that around 30ppl told some US tourist to "don't came back" bcs she was totally unable to behave, saying nonsense, etc. i also met some US tourist who thought that 70y old woman will speak english. etc... Not just for US, but everyone, do a bit of research before you go somwhere.

That thought is not so straightforward as i've seen some of the most fierce fighting and conflict between some brothers and some sisters. So yeah, i guess we all are brothers and sisters, and sometimes we fight and ruin each other's lives as hard as some of the hardest fighting brothers and sisters out there.

I went to a mosque just to check it out and all the young guys were trying to convert me. The older guys just sat back and told them to leave him be, he didn't come here to get harassed.

You should write a book when you get much older. You have great stories & experiences. Im no person to tell another what to do, but from a 38 year old, i can tell you those Monster energy drinks are bad for you, bro. Not just the caffeine. I used to drink 2 green ones a day.

"I distinguish between people and the government and treat others with respect. That is why I went to carry the war for money to other parts of the world, so that MY government would defeat the SAME greedy governments of other countries and establish the dominance of American capital. And yes - don't listen to the media, but I will do what mine promotes."
