I was informed I was mistaken - King Tide ~ Not Sneaker Waves Oregon Coast watch till the end

My bad on the misidentification, only been a beachgoer for 6 months or so, came here from Montana so no beaches there! : )
Anyway, I was informed this is a King Tide, so not Sneaker Waves....either way, I am now aware of both and to be careful. if you look closely, the log in the middle left is swaying when the water is at its highest. That log is now located on the side of the water that I was standing on. "I am aware" in more than one way. Blessings

Geophysicist and surfer here who lives at the beach on the northern Oregon coast. While this may have occurred _during_ a King Tide, it has nothing to do with it. This is properly called an _infragravity wave_ (see Wikipedia), also known as _surf beat._ They are almost always present, but unless the open ocean swell that day is large, we don't notice it. You can see the large surf in the background. Those distant waves, which likely have a period around 10-15 seconds, set up an additional dynamic along the coast -- a sloshing in and out -- that occurs between every 1-5 minutes. So when the water recedes, it can be for a fairly long time, which lulls people into thinking the "coast is clear". But then a few minutes later it sloshes back in and can be tremendously powerful and dangerous, and usually catch people off guard. No wonder infragravity waves are what everyone calls _sneaker waves._ So, you were right the first time!

As a rule, the tide does not come in this abruptly. I think this is an exceptional wave that presumably came ashore during a king tide.

Yeah, I've had people tell me that. I've also had people tell me that it could have been a sneaker wave on top of the king tide because the tides weren't coming quite that far in every single time... I don't know, but either way I'm going to be more cautious when the tides are like that. It was enough water it could have knocked me on my butt and probably been bad.... so anyway thanks for the comment! Blessings.

King tides come in just like any other tide -- gradually. King tides just come in a little faster and more persistently than normal tides. They do not come in all at once. Those waves were much bigger than previous waves. They were sneakers on a king tide.

Tides take hours - this a surge (most people mislabel them sneaker waves) - on days when the surf is large they arrive every few minutes - a group of larger swells pushes its way on shore.
