Later that season, Gretzky and his OIlers teammates went into the playoffs and were booted out in the first round by the Kings. The following season, Glen Sather reduced Gretzky's ice time from 26 minutes per game to 22 minutes, because the goal was to win the Stanley Cup, not set individual records, and Sather had found out that Gretzky was worn down going into the 1982 playoffs.

@@jamesbarrett3149 You don't get it, maybe never will. Personal stats are for contract time. In 1971 Boston had 33 new team and individual records. In game 7 when it counted, 38 year old Jean Beliveau collected 3 points while in their prime at age 23 Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito were on the ice. Orr and Esposito would break new scoring records while Beliveau would raise his 10th Stanley Cup. Jean never played 35 minutes a game. Nor did he tell Yvonne Cornoyer or J.C. Tremblay hey pass me the puck and I will take all the glory and meet my contract bonus clause. Yes Ken Dryden played a role but in Boston's end that's back checking. In wartime it's a plus and minus to rely on the Bismark because everyone is gunning for you. Orr's knees took a major beating going up the middle all the time instead of passing it off. Jean, Yvonne, and J.C. could all put the puck in the net making it much harder to defend against. That's why the Canadians in that period is the best ever. And a leader who gets it. One day you might too. The best is who leads while producing. Everyone is amazed at Tim Brady's 7 Super Bowls. Well he needs 3 more to catch Jean Beliveau. Bobby Hull also won more scoring titles but then watched Jean hoist the cup that year. Leadership raises cups too. 10 times for Jean.

Today they are groomed from nearly birth to be hockey players because of how Hockey became more popular because of the CANADIENS winning so many cups... Gretzky’s made 50 in 50 boring, by scoring 50 in less than 50 games on just once, not just twice, but THREE times lol

can we just admit that goalies and defense sucked back then and Gretzky would not have the numbers he has in today's NHL?

There were more 100+ Pointers last year then in the 86-87 Season when Gretzky scored 183 Points and won the Art Ross on his Assists alone .

Goalies were pure garbage back then. Lift the puck, it went in. Gretzky in his prime, wouldn’t even make the nhl in today’s standards.

Give Gretzky all the training programs, nutrition info, equipment advances, and general technology the modern players have had access to and he'd still be a star. Yeah, the goalies didn't have the technique or padding they do now, but Gretzky was still winning scoring races by 70 points. If it was so easy why didn't anybody else do it?
