Indeed this story has come at the right time. Already in the USA, filed 3 cases, used about 3.5 million Kshs, spent two decades and still alive???? Kweli this is the spirit we need. Just to enlighten those talking about her ascent...You are coming to the USA and you want to be understood by the citizens here. You are required to interact with people from different cultures. So, you must learn to twist your tongue. Our problem in Kenya is that our teachers prepared us for Kenya and not for the world. If you have a child now, do you want her to speak as you do?? chanukeni wakenya, it is for your good and your children. Hakuna maringo hapo. you just need to communicate. You do not know how difficult it is to talk with a kenyan accent over the phone...nobody understands you.

May God continually bless you madam Serah. You are an epitome of resilience and faith in God. This year is the first time am applying for green card (having graduated last year back here in Kenya). It marks the beginning of a promising journey as I eye the land of opportunities. I have strong faith and believe that I will come back here with a testimony/ies as I share my story. In regard to the other side of the story, and as the saying goes ukienda Rome behave like Romans. So I don't see anything wrong with her accent. In fact I admire it. Again 20 years in the US is no joke. So why criticize? Then please am looking for a job (sadly I lost my job 2 months ago). Any leads/connection/referral will be highly appreciated. When you come to the USA you will understand that the English you spoke in Kenya ni yako na watu wenyu. For you to be understood by these people you just have to change your accent. Some Americans are ready rude or ignorant. They don't even make an effort to understand what you are saying if you have an accent no matter how well you try to express yourself. If they don't understand you, they then brush you off. Some think if you cannot communicate clearly then you are not intelligent.

I came to the U.S in 1990 for college. I completely refused to change my accent. I am kichwa ngumu, I instead made them get used to it and develop patience with people who have a different accent and most people I interact with are fascinated by my accent. It's the one identity I will never change. Heck, I also struggled with being able to understand them.

What an interview! Very inspiring. All things held constant, I just love how all through she references God (faith in God) and unity (with family and friends), very important.
