I Want to Clear Out My Storage Before I Die | Storage Hoarders

In today's episode, our hoarders uncover some questionable finds, get heated about what to skip and what to sell, but will they hit the jackpot when they go to auction?
Self-storage is big business and can help us create space in our over-crowded home. But, some have taken their storage hoarding too far, clinging on to things they never see or use, and it’s costing them a fortune

I just cleaned up a hoard belonging to me dear late husband. It took my son and I over a year to empty out a house. Hoarders, don't wait till you are on Hospice to clean your hoard up. It is so mean to leave the mess behind for your children! wish I could get a professional organizer to help me.

Mean? Really? I know is emotionally exhausting but it's a loved one that passed, to even think that deal with trash is more problematic than the lost of someone is mean. I cleaned my mother things in one week, it crushed me inside, but it was done as quickly as possible.

My mother made a list of the antique and family pieces. All 6 of us got the list with instructions to rank the top 5 things we wanted in order of importance. Then she either gave it to us before she died or we got it afterwards as she left instructions on who got what. It saved a lot of squabbling as what was #1 on one persons list might have been a 5 on anothers. She also started giving stuff away to her kids and letting me sell some things on ebay for her. But there was still a big fabric stash and costume stash. She was a professional seamstress for decades.

Empty nester here currently doing the same thing. I'm also photographing family items & including their history too so that the item's story can also be passed down. Leaving tons of household possessions for children to deal with strikes me as selfish. Plus if it interests them they can use much of it now for their growing families.

It did drive me crazy and I did leave (back to my own home that I'd been renting out to bail him out financially, as this wasn't the only aspect of his life that was a mess). I like things to be organized so I don't waste time finding crap or money buying doublers, but I'm not a neat freak; however struggling to get laundry completed and get out to work clean and decent every day is not normal. That's nice if him. my dad left his house full, and he actually would rather die because of it, than sort it. Since he did actually. His house was full of his own poo and wee, hundreds of cameras, general rubbish and so much stuff that was destroyed with water damage. The mould in the house I suspect led to the pneumonia that killed him. His house is wrecked, and its cost nearly 10k to deal with just the removal. So I urge anyone who is next if kin to a hoarder, to deal with it together while they're still around.

The six-acre property is a mess too: the garages, former horse stables, on-site summer house, all full. She won't listen to family. I kept 2 boxes only of papers, 1870s family letter etc. However the children want me to keep the 100 photo albums for after I die so those arein 10 boxes upstairs! It's endless at times but I do recommend digitalising. I did it with stuff when my parents died too which I can now find in a few seconds on my computer (it is also backed up to hard drive) saved by year. Even today I emailed my son a 1980 4 page essay competition short story I wrote (which is similar to his views today on the environment) and it was so nice to have it scanned from my original typed version of 1980.

Lorraine - I know exactly what you mean about thinking it's disrespectful to get rid of stuff. My mother died 7 years ago, aged 90, having lived in the same house for 60+ years, and I still haven't managed to dispose of some of her things. (Sadly, we didn't get on very well, and Mum had dementia which made that worse, and I couldn't persuade her to part with anything while she was alive) I found her clothes the hardest things - she always wore lovely skirts and blouses - so my way of letting go of them was to hang each item up on the wall, and photograph it, so the actual item could then go, but I still have the photographic memory of it. Some people also use a loved ones clothes to make a memory quilt to keep, which is another nice idea - and I am going to turn a mohair jacket I gave Mum into a teddy bear that I can keep. I wish you well in your journey and hope you can find peace soon.

MudlarksAlmanac very nice. My mother and I also loved each other but always had a difficult relationship. Our personalities were very alike in some regards and so different in others, and we were both defensive and fault finding with one another. I did my very best for her, and thankfully have a sister who was much closer with her who assumed much of the responsibility for her. I always am amazed when people speak of a parent as a best friend, always accepting and supportive. And kind of envious. She has been gone 2 years and I have regrets, sadness, and yes, some relief that she is no longer here. Sad but true. We had no trouble letting go of her things, including the many beautiful clothes she owned. Her things went to nieces, nephews, friends, the wonderful people who helped care for her in her last years, and my sis and I took a little. The rest went to a thrift shop that donates all its earnings to local charities. I like your idea of photographing then letting go of your mom’s things.

Is there someone else in the family who could take on the task - decide what in their is worth keeping or just photographing or scanning and getting rid of the rest as you do not want anything? Some things I feel I have a family responsibility to pass on - about 3 items. I am so sorry about your daughter. My neighbour is similar - has a lot of her daughter's old 1960s photos taken for work in her house , far far too much of it and she really shoudl just keep a few items for memoyr's sake and throw the rest out. Instead she will die in the house and her sons will have to deal with it all I suppose now (she is 85).
