We bought the bags of chopped straw mulch two years ago and put it on our beds in the fall. We didn't have any of the wind problems as we get snow that stays where we are. Didn't check it out until end of march after the soil warmed up and low and behold we had a nice crop of what we believed was wheat about 4 in tall. It pulled out clean and neat roots and all and we had few problems with any weeds other than the odd wheat stem. Last year we didn't use it but still had a few vagrant wheat stems again but pulled them out. I would like to use the mulch again but would sift it somehow to remove any seeds.
It's rubbish stuff like so many gimmicky products sadly .Its a trend now to try to fleece gardeners for things no one needs. .
Happy Birthday to Mrs C Smith. I think companies always base the measurements under ideal conditions not reality mate so you can usually take half to a third off the measurement
To be honest Tony even if it worked the cost of keeping my plot covered in Strulch it would be cheaper employing a gardener
It's best to pull those weeds at that stage, doesn't take a lot while you're looking at them, don't give them a chance to get their roots in too far

Great video Tony, we love seeing the dogs, didn't know you had 4, but as mum says you can never have enough dogs 🐶we don't have anything like scrulch here so I just use grass clippings, but it's easy for us as our veg beds are in the garden, we remember you saying it wasn't cheap, so for an experiment it looks good on the two beds, but it would cost you a fortune to do the whole plot. So impressed with your onions in the self water trays, might have to think about something like that as we are shocking at remembering to water. Slo mo dogs are the best! Big licks from Colin😃
it looks like it has helped suppress some weed seeds and the stuff should rot down and aid soil health if i am not mistaken :)
Happy birthday to Mrs Smith, take good care of her Tony❤
I use Strulch and have been very pleased over the years. I haven’t measured though. Claire Bristol uk

Yes, I ve used it for my strawberry patches without any problems.
I’ve used the strulch on my strawberries and I was good also less slug damage also mulched round my garlic and it’s fine , I live in Cornwall and we get a lot of strong winds , key is make sure you soak it when you put it down and it doesn’t blow away . Love watching dogs playing , happy birthday to Mrs Smith hope she had a nice day. ❤️
I agree Tony, the packs of strulch dont realistically cover 3 m2 with any depth to the coverage, which is obviously needed to supress the weeds. The Equinox horse bedding gets my vote as being the better supressant. Our glorious Northeast weather seems to have let up in gateshead today, we have had sun from about 12.30, and its still sunny now, 2pm. You are looking the picture of health now, fantastic 👍
What's that blue stuff over your head & why is it so bright? Over here in Cumbria we've seen nowt like that for weeks & I need my 4x4 just to get through the road/river to see my sister. Picked up three 205 litre water barrels today & I reckon if I take the tops off, they'll be full before I need them... As for mulch: I'm no till (no dig is a misnomer IMO) & the annual 3cm of home made compost on my beds does a pretty good job of keeping weeds to a minimum. Plus it's free & full of nutrients.
I use strulch quite a bit and never have a problem with it. I can also get it a bit cheaper where i live and consider the cost worthwhile.
Lovely to see the dogs having a great time.
the dogs are having a lot of fun hope they not make mums floor mundy😅
Loved watching the dogs having such a great time ❤
I always give the strulch a watering when I've put it down, Tony, helps to keep it from flying away. I use it more sparingly than the instructions, and never have much of a problem.
I only use it for my potatoes in buckets I wasn’t impressed with it on my beds I think it needs to go on really thick and it would cost fortune!! X
Oh its so so good to see you doing well, you appear hale and hardy. Thanks for your efforts.
Hi Tony great to hear from you and hope doing good mate. Tell you what Tony what I do for my beds once the beds are preped and redding for planting up I simply cover me beds with card keeps weeds at bay and the card warms the soil ready for planting and card is free and can be composted after I'm as tight as a ducks arse I don't like blowing brass because if I do I squeak and the moths escape from out the wallet all the best mate take care.😊
Well, I'm not particularly a dog person, but that was a delight seeing your hounds enjoying the fresh air and water, nice camera work too Tony ! A belated Happy Birthday wish to Mrs Smith !
Hi Tony - I am considering using chopped oil seed rape straw as a mulch, have you ever tried it? I have found a product called Unibed which is actually horse bedding at £7 a bale so quite cheap. What do you think?
Didn’t you put normal straw down on one of them? I still have my stretch in the bags, not used them yet
Dogs happy running around, your allotment looks tidy ready for seasonal planting, not too many weeds just need picking out , all the best Tony 😊
I use good ol mulch. 👍👌 You like your pocket 3 👌 best thing ive bought.
I've never used strulch Tony, I use straw on potato pots keeps the moisture in, talking of moisture the allotment was drying out lovely couple weeks ago, then all this rain again in Consett, I'll need a snorkel over the plot if this keeps up. I hope you cleaned the dogs before walking back into the kitchen 😉. Steve Colwell
Hi Tony, youvard going to ve in trouble when you get home, with muddy dogs 😂 your seedlings are doing well. Trial & error with different mulch. I do use rapestraw which works really well although you do get seed plants coming through but, not a lot. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
i mentioned in a prev post that Henderson at Lizard farm (just along the road from you) has the chopped rape straw for £6.50 a bale. buy cheaper and put more down. can be used for chooks ducks and other small furries too.
Happy Birthday to the missus marra Re the strulch why not just buy straw bailes (around our area approx £2:50 a bail) and mulch it with ya lawn mower
Goodtosee your smiling face this Friday morning, Tony. You should write to the company and complain about the change in quality of their product.
Happy birthday to your wife, hope you treated her,😊 it's my wedding anniversary to 50 years don't know where the times gone.
hello tony when you make your next gardener Q&A video can you you interview a fellow youtube gardener called Sean james camron or maybe ask him on to your potty mouth gardening club as a guests for incase you make a video about taking care of roses or night sented stock. thanks tony.
I think mum would have a fit if you brought those mucky pups back in the house. They were having a lovely time though. Great slo mo. Never knew you had four. I say, if you can manage three, you can manage four. All the best, Elaine 🌱

Thanks Tony, great vlogging of your dogs enjoying themselves. Did you pick up a stray because I didn't know you had four?🐕🦺🐕🦺🐕🦺 On a similar note, I have complained to Baxters soup company because my soup is always 20mls less than 400mls!!!! 💚🤔
