I VISITED THE CAT SCALE & THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED!

Ойын-сауық

A lot of people use weight distribution hitches but do they really work? In this episode, I spend the morning at our local CAT Scales weighing our Lance Travel Trailer and our Chevrolet 2500HD in various configurations to find out just what is happening when we use our Anderson Weight Distribution system.

    This was well done and good info. Some other channels say there is little to no WD with the Anderson, only sway control. You proved it does distribute weight appropriately. I wonder what happened to your 800 lb. tongue weight with WD? They recommend at least 10% of trailer weight, so 500 lb. In your case. For me, ideally, I would like less tongue weight and more distribution to the trailer and truck. But my Airstream weighs 6500 fully loaded, so I want a hitch that gives me 650-750 lbs. tongue weight. My equalizer is heavy, noisy, and dirty with lubrication. But it does distribute and there is no sway. The Weighsafe with adjustable tongue weight (built in guage/scale) might be better for my application. Thanks again!

    Great video, Patrick, and one of the easiest-to-follow explanations how weight distribution works I've ever seen. I was considering moving from the Fastway E2 WD hitch to the Anderson just to get rid of the heavy, sometimes noisy bars, but had read and heard that although they are outstanding at preventing and controlling sway, their weight-distribution capabilities aren't as good as a traditional "bar" system. I reached out to Anderson with all of the pertinent figures and information from my CAT scale measurements asking whether their hitch could get the job done (I'm transferring about 150 pounds to the front axle with the E2), and their reply was: "Our system is more so a load leveling system. You may get some weight distribution, but not as much as a traditional trunnion bar style system.." I read between the lines and took that to mean it wasn't a good choice for our 1/2 ton Silverado and Lance 2285. It does bring up an oft-misunderstood point about WD hitches though, as many people think the only reason to use one is to take weight off the rear axle (to prevent sagging or mitigate tongue weight that would exceed either payload capacity or rear GAWR). That's only half of the equation. It is equally important to add weight back to the front axle to make sure the front tires have sufficient contact with the road for safe steering and braking.

    A WDH is a torque hitch. Fact: no torsion bars, means no torque, means no "wdh". If you need more torque than the Andersen can provide, you need a larger truck. Play safe: the life you save could be your own.

  • @092155GW
    @092155GW17 күн бұрын

    My biggest concern with WD hitches is that the weight isn't magically transferred from one axle to another. It is transferred by torquing the tow-vehicle and trailer via the tow-vehicle tow-bar and trailer coupler and frame. This adds stress to those areas equal to the weight being transferred, or more when bumps are encountered. What is worse, is that bumps (especially large bumps) cause additional movement of the WD hitch system which increase the torque substantially for brief moments. Frames and tow-bars begin to break in these situations, and sometimes break from regular use with WDH's. A dangerous game is played if one doesn't properly calculate their tow-vehicle's capabilities and trailer's capabilities & frame strength, and stay well below its limits. PS: I personally use an Anderson WD hitch.

  • @robertperron819

    @robertperron819

    What exactly are those capabilities that you are referring to and how do you calculate them?

  • @092155GW

    @092155GW

    13 күн бұрын

    @@robertperron819 I assume you are looking for a quick answer, and/or a website you can use to answer your question, but unfortunately there isn't one source that is wholly sufficient for all the information needed. Please note that WD hitches are not necessarily a bad product to use; but it can be dangerous and damaging to equipment if one doesn't use them properly. There are almost endless sources on the internet for calculating your towing capacity, weight balance, and etc., but none I have found give a complete process or understanding, thus it requires reading through multiple sites to gather information. You'll see once you start looking and reading. There are also plenty of examples of cracked trailer and tow-vehicle frames from towing improperly, and WD hitches used in situations of improperly loaded or overloaded/unbalanced tow-vehicles and trailers. If you are serious about your towing then take the time to read as much as possible about the subject. There are even spreadsheet calculators available, although I would learn about the subject first before assuming one of these calculators is sufficient enough. I saw one the was incomplete with regard to necessary data input needed. Someone unaware might think they are okay using the data it provided, but unfortunately they would not be. Many individuals are fairly ignorant about their tow-vehicle and trailer capabilities; not to mention tow-vehicle & trailer payload balance and distribution, or that there is a difference between tow rating and payload ratings. Also, while manufacturers provide towing data, they do not include your frame's actual construction material strength. Even if you call a manufacturer, they will not tell you specific data. I can only assume for liability reasons, which only reinforces my point about towing. Many just assume if a vehicle is rated to tow 15,000 lbs. they just go ahead and tow 15,000. The reality is, that is not how it works. In this example, comfortable towing for a variety of situations would be limited to half to three-quarters of that weight (7,500 - 11,250 lbs.). There will be thousands of individuals that will say they have towed such and such weight with such and such vehicle for years and never had a problem. That may be true, but it doesn't mean they have not been at serious risk doing so. The problem is, when something goes wrong it happens fast, and equipment and people get hurt, if not killed - and sometimes innocent people. Please take the time to read and learn about this subject. Just found this link where is he mentions some of the problems I was refering to: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIJ3qcWtXZzWcto.html

    I have a question. First I do have an Anderson hitch and love it. I just started carrying 2 e bikes Lets call it 160# total with carrier. I found my trailer became unstable, so I started carrying cases of water in the front cargo hold to offset the added weight in the back. So the question is could I have just operated without the weight distribution hitch to prevent the weight from moving to the trailer. I guess the question is where the actual weight the is moved back Is actually being applied. It’s a pretty big issue. I’m even thinking of adding metal plate to the tongue. Any suggestions?

    Your combined weight was 13,180, and the truck alone was 7480, so the actual trailer weight was 5,700 lbs, correct? I'm trying to determine how close I am to my trailer's GVWR, So I just need to 1) weigh truck w/trailer 2) weigh truck alone, then subtract truck weight from the combined weight. Am I under thinking this?

    You are correct. Weigh your truck. Then hitch up and weigh the truck and trailer together. Subtract the two and that will give you your trailer weight.

    What was the tongue weight with the Anderson ?😊

    It redistributed 120 pounds so I believe that would put the tongue weight on the rear axle at 680#.

    Your weight distribution setup works just not very well in my opinion. You are still light on your steering. I use a Propride setup. It is awesome 👌. I don't have a set of scales any where near me to check mine but I would really like to perform the same test you did. Great video. I am sure you are going to change your weight distribution setup when you upgrade your trailer. 😉

    I would say that I probably would not use the Anderson with a rig much heavier than ours however with our new truck. I am very happy with it in this combo as it tows great for us. Each person needs to determine what is right for them.

    I was thinking the same thing but Andersons strength is sway control more than weight distribution. I may switch it back over to my old bar system to see what it does.

    That’s exactly the reason I ditched the Anderson and went with the R3. With the R3 properly adjusted I was able to move about 75% of the weight back to the front axle. For my rig I was only getting about 20 lbs back to the front axle with the Anderson. For my 1/2 ton truck the Anderson was a total fail on weight distribution, even with the Andersen chains tightened way beyond the recommended starting position.

    @@TravelswithDelaney That would be an awesome idea! You should do that for your next video. We also have the Anderson in which we tow our keystone cougar 22rbs with our 2014 Toyota tundra. @@TravelswithDelaney yes we are! We opted for the reclining heated theatre seats as opposed to the dinette. It is so open and airy, especially with the big front windshield in the nose cap. And not to mention the insane amount of storage in such a small unit. We also opted for the solar 400i package which gives us two panels on the roof to keep the battery trickle charging all the time. We also went with the 12 V compressor fridge which means it never gets shut off and is always ready to go.

    An example of the EFFECTS of WDH. WDH is bullshit. A WDH cannot "distribute" weight. To distribute, the physical footprint must change: e.g. a 3x4 array of blocks must be altered to say a 2x6 array. What a WDH does is apply torsion to the frame of truck and trailer. Torsion means torque, which is a force. That force must go somewhere: Newton's law. It goes into the frame of your truck. The force is not static: it will multiply as you gain speed and as you traverse potholes and bumps. The stress on frames can be enormous: sufficient to crack them. uh, ask me how I know. The reason for the apparent "shifting" of weights is the angle of sag; the angle of deflection. ANYTHING that reduces the angle will cause weight to be shifted to the other axles: simple laws of levers. A better means is to use air bags. In my day, levers were taught in grade 8. The fact hundreds of thousands of American RV-ers cannot understand grade 8 science is proof how drugged-up and dumbed-down is the nation.

    You are 100% correct. It's all in the stress of the truck and trailer frame.
