This is pretty much a full reboot Dontai. At the end of last game, Liu Kang became a god and reset the universe before remaking it. Thats why the tournament isn't to the death, Liu Kang's universe is meant to be a more peaceful, better version!

I played the first half of the story on hard mode then I just switched it to medium because I was getting my ass beat and I just wanted to enjoy the story instead of sweating every time I fight💀

Basically after the events of MK11 Liu Kang resets the timeline to a more peaceful world

So it's a fire way to make a reboot but also feeling like its a continuation.

Participants died in the previous timeline during the tournament however liu kang has restarted the timeline so he technically didn’t die if nobody has died during a tournament. Liu kang has knowledge of the previous timeline but he wasn’t the protector of earthrealm. He became keeper of time after defeating Shang tsung in mk11 and made his own universe from the very beginning.

Yes tai this timeline is a new fresh start. Since lui kang became a god now he wanted more peace between the realms so this is the result of his attempt
