At face value it seems like a blatant contradiction but a cornered animal will bite and bite hard. I'm actually amazed that there is still no copy available of the court documents on the internet since apparently any Norwegian with an ID can simply go take a look. I would be very interested to see if the documents actually corroborate Varg's claims that the police were aware of Euronymous' plans to kill him and whether or not the evidence supports the story of how the final conflict actually went down as Varg tells it. You can say anything you want about the guy but he never really came across as a liar to me. Official records would instantly make it clear if Varg is full of shit or not.

He said that Fenriz was getting very drunk at the time and in Varg's other online content as well as the book, he has said that some people in that time and scene romanticize it because they were too fucked up to remember how awful it was. It is good that Varg keeps that to a whisper. Aside from spawning a new genre of music, nothing good came from the early black metal scene in Norway. Cultural treasures destroyed in the form of church burnings, murders and suicides are the results. It is amazing to me how the conversations about these events have perpetuated and that people are still actively interested.

There is one thing that debunks Varg's story - if that was self defense in a spark of moment then why did he build himself an alibi? That makes only sense if he planed to kill him from beginning. Im a Burzum and Mayhem fan but Varg is such a pathological liar that gets lost in his stories. One of Hades members that took place in that "event" debunks Varg's story in details!

Also read this book. I read Lords of Chaos alongside it too and Varg contradicts himself a lot concerning his political views. In Lords of Chaos, his mother was interviewed and was asked about how Varg got his political beliefs. She said she had no clue but in Vargs book he directly says he got his views from his mother and father. Varg also talked about when he first got into interrogation he did a Nazi solute but then later says the court and press murdered his character and made him look bad for no reason. Those were just some thoughts i had about it. Overall it was a really unprofessional book and i was actually annoyed reading it. Varg has a victim complex throughout the entire thing and is too delusional to take accountability for anything he did. I did enjoy when he wrote about music but thats about it.

At the end of the day the second wave of BM failed. You could find Mayhem albums in bundles in bargain bins in the small distribution (often hand delivered) that they had. The recognition was so bad that Varg self snitched because he wanted the notoriety he wasn't getting. Now here is the funny part: Even after the Kerrang cover NOTHING HAPPENED. It was a DECADE later when the internet spread the story of the murder/suicide/church burning did the music get "good". Everyone initially saw through it that they were a Hellhammer/Bathory clone. It was only after until the hype from the crimes started spreading through the internet (mostly middle and upper class college kids) did people start to like the second wave bands. I'm in my 50's and remember the Kerrang cover etc. I remember Dark Throne were a Death/Entombed copycat before copying Mayhem. Now I have to put up with HORDES of copycat blackened bands killing the undeground with clones. Trem picking, blast beats and anguished screams for 35 years is torture. I loved the first wave but 2nd wave black metal killed the underground DEAD. Like agent Smith in the matrix copying himself until it chokes the scene.

Lol You won't fool anyone by repeating this myth all the time, it's 2024 and pretty much nobody within the scene respects Varg, and much to his chagrin, everyone respects Euronymous so I guess Varg still can't understand how respect is conquered.

@@containternet9290 The "scene" from the 90's in norway doesn't even exist anymore. Fenriz has openly praised Varg for his early albums and even if no one wants to be associated with Varg now, it's pretty much common knowledge from all the old-school guys that Burzum had a huge influence in black metal and set the path for the down-tempo depressive strain of black metal. Everyone tries so hard to undermine this, which is strange, because "Filosofem" is probably one of the most iconic black metal albums to ever be released and most BM bands praise it, and yet all these young politically correct metal guys now try so hard to pass over and not even mention Burzum, because it's trendy and its what has stuck from mainstream channels.

@@ancestrosdelsol9494 You're just repeating the same myth again. I want you to prove Varg and Burzum is really influential so you tell me 3 great musicians or bands that take inspiration from Varg(musically speaking) and Burzum? I want members of these bands mentioning it in their albums or interviews. Reality is, virtually no band covers Burzum's songs, Varg never received tribute albums from the big bands, so how come can Burzum be that influential if nobody ever remembers its existence? Now, except for some NSBM garbage bands Burzum and Varg influenced almost nobody and the old-school guys you mentioned actually sidelined Varg after he murdered Euronymous in 1993, I would even say Varg would be dead today if lived in Norway or Sweden after he was released from jail, let's not forget that bands like Marduk, Dissection, Abruptum and others regarded him as a traitor and even death threatened him in the mid 90's. Now, black metal bands always mention Venom, Bathory, Mayhem and Darkthrone's influence in interviews, Euronymous, Quorthon and Jon Nodtveidt are always regarded as the kings of extreme metal, yet Varg's name never comes up unless Euronymous' murder is brought up. Varg and his fanboys try hard to make Burzum relevant after all these decades because Varg is most known for murdering Euronymous and for the arsons, he's more famous for being a criminal(and now a crackpot conspiracy theorist) than a musician and that's a very bad reputation one can uphold as an adult.
