We usually bash the referees but in this case, the ref seems to have been totally on the ball, ready to stop the play if Tampa had continued the rush or if Montembeault not releasing the puck asap.

I think you're right entirely. The referee was watching for pressure and Tampa peeled off the attack the moment the puck was caught. I don't know, it seems much more like Tampa's fault but at the very least it's a shared fault between both the Lightning and the linesmen who also got fooled. But the referee looked a bit shocked and was expecting to stop the play when nobody from Tampa made it half way into the zone. I don't know, that's on Tampa in my opinion but I also don't blame them for being pissed off nor for them being fooled. I just think they need to get off the laurels and play to the whistle at all times, these scenarios have happened many, many times. Not this one specifically but play to the whistle scenarios.

What I don’t understand is like, nobody from Lightning was there because what are they suppose to do? Charge the net for the goalie to just hold it? Why would the goalie drop a puck near the net when they’re right there? Players are there fast enough that dropping isn’t a the right strategy. I don’t think the ref should have forced the play. They’re suppose to stop delays, but that’s when there are not players in the offensive zone there to pressure. The goalie felt pressure to hold the puck. I don’t like that the ref can just device for the goalie what pressure means. I don’t care for the “play until the whistle” because, I don’t always hear the whistle. It could have just been a weak blow or whistle during the DJ playing the music. I don’t know. I don’t like it. I think it’s all within the rules, but I can’t say I agree. The goalie didn’t pick up a random puck. He depending a shot on goal. The goalie felt pressured to stop the puck. The ref could have dropped the whistle or it slipped out of his mouth. You don’t know that, but when a player without possession is just standing around and waiting for a puck drop and it’s not there, literally what are the offensive players options? Risk a penalty because they thought they didn’t hear a whistle when it could have blown? In those split seconds, it seems the safer thing is to assume the puck stopped moving and it’s a stoppage.

Have you never watched hockey before? on 99% of shots there is a player heading to the net to either get a rebound, create traffic in front of the net, or just to simply be a nuisance. "Why would the goalie drop a puck near the net when they’re right there?" They weren't right there, that's the whole point. The nearest Lightning player at the time of the shot was in the face-off circle and he was skating away from the net. "Risk a penalty because they thought they didn’t hear a whistle when it could have blown?" How would they be risking a penalty? Nobody is saying that they should have just started hitting people or ran the goalie over. Skating up to another player is not a penalty.

Based on the rulebook, even if he held the puck for more than 3 seconds, it doesn’t become a delay of game until he refuses to play the puck after a verbal warning from the referee.

yeah i doubt he would have gotten a penalty. the ref would have blown the whistle then went to him and said next time play the puck if you don't hear my whistle. its happend to me a few times. i usually hold it to get a line change for my guys, I just nod an "ok" and that's that.

@@jamesgrantham7281 Interestingly no - but it is exceedingly rate to call a penalty on a goalie who freezes the puck (whilst in his crease) even over the direction to "play it" from the ref... I can't say that I've ever seen it happen. Warnings? sure thing. And mostly, if there are no attackers around (e.g. an icing attempt that happens to be on-net), there is usually incentive on the goalie to play it anyways (because it is the opposing team that is trying to get a change in and maybe they can be caught off-guard). I've never seen a goalie freeze the puck with nobody in his zone on that type of play, even if it is on net... they'd have to just let it sit there, wait for the opposing player to actually apply pressure, and then they could freeze it (which oddly enough, results in even more time being killed)

Such a weird goal. I'm glad you pointed out the arena DJ, and damn... The song they played happened to start out with a big horn blast which definitely tricked me while I was watching the game live. All the Canadiens players were fooled, even both the linesmen moved up as if to set up a faceoff. All I know is I'd be a lot more upset about the goal if we didn't end up winning anyway, but as it is, it'll be a funny highlight to see popping up on "Strangest NHL Goals Ever" type of videos for the next few years.

For the no-whistle goal, even the linesmen thought the play had ended! That last Montreal goal was amazing!

Thank you for the context about this goal, no other clips we've seen about this explained the rules related to why this wasn't blown down. My wife (the Stars fan) thanks you and so do I.

First glance when watching the game I thought Tampa got screwed but I guess I've just never seen an opposing player not challenge the net. As a guy that played goalie its pretty rare that they just screw off and leave you to play the puck like that in a 5 on 5 scenario at even the college level when I played.

​@@beardreacts2740the ref gave him the "keep it moving" sign and that's when he dropped it. He too thought the play would be whistled dead. If he ignored the ref he would have gotten a penalty but he didn't so play continues. No need to review any rules as none were broken, just Tampa players giving up on a play they thought was over....play to the whistle. If it was a playoff game not one player would have skated away, maybe the lack of intensity is why Tampa is fighting for a wildcard spot right now.

Even the ref thought it was gonna be dead but when he saw no Tampa players at the net you clearly see him gesture with his right hand to keep it moving, so he dropped the puck. Saying you saw a ref call something last season means nothing because consistency in the NHL refs is not a strong point and never has been.

You can actually see the ref make a hand gesture to the Montreal goalie to keep going, play the puck. 2:10

It kinda reminds me of the game between Czechia and Canada where Canada scored after somebody whistled from the crowd. Czechs stopped playing and Canada scored.

To the know-it-all hockey gurus in the comments saying "How stupid can they be for not realizing it was a live puck... bla bla bla..." The fact that this is a play blown dead 9,999/10,000 times and it even confused NHL players... if you were in the game you would have thought the same thing cmon 🤨 It is a lesson to be learned however and a good refresher for everyone to play till the whistle (which IS a golden rule)... Also I agree the DJ playing music definitely did not help 😬😂

Absolute respect to the ref for not feeling "obligated" to blow that play dead. Honestly, watch any nhl game. They blow this same play dead wayyy too early. This was exactly the right call and you have to play to the fukkn whistle. Cooper is a top tier coach. This should definitely make him mad.

He's mad because of the inconsistency. You said it yourself.... they blow this dead wayyy too early. They do it almost every single time. Everyone including the lineseman, DJ, and every player on the ice thought it would be blown dead. They're conditioned to think this, because historically that's how it's called. Except for once a year when they decide not to.

@@mrichardsonmobile They typically blow it early other times because while there might not be players nearby causing pressure, they're clearly moving toward the net and so the ref doesn't want it to go too long and risk a pileup in front of a net or the opposing team doing the old spray the goalie with ice while stopping trick, which often ends up in a fight sooner or later. This is just a weird time where it was clear no one was heading toward the net.

I actually had no idea the goalie was forced to play the puck if there were no opposing players nearby. It makes perfect sense, I guess I just never got to see a moment where there was nobody challenging the play at all. Wild stuff.

No players within 40 feet of another player... time stamp 2:12 of this video shows the ref telling the goalie (motions with right hand low lets go). Clearly a sloppy bit on Tampa's part ;) Good goal and a the ever rare goalie assist :)

@@beardreacts2740 Yeah, and he also assumed the play was over. Either it's Tampa's fault for putting zero pressure on the goalie or it's officials fault. But in no way should it have been a delay of game. As soon as he realized it he played the puck, Tampa peeled off the second the puck hit the goalie. You play to the whistle, too many times have we seen scenarios like that to NOT play to the whistle and the fact that others got fooled isn't an excuse for not being sure the play was over, it's just not. We've all seen these scenarios BEFORE, you PLAY TO THE WHISTLE lol that's all there is to it, these scenarios have occurred too many times. Not this specifically, this was an odd one, but not playing to the whistle has bitten the ass of many a team. Every NHL player ought to know that.

@@beardreacts2740it doesn’t matter, under the rule book, the play is only blown dead if there is offensive pressure, this is to prevent teams from giving it to their goalie for a freeze. It isn’t enforced this way very often but by the rule book the refs did the right thing.

I think Tampa did this previously a couple of years ago too. They should know better. No reason to blow the whistle. DJ and Tampa blew it. But not the ref!

I paused it as soon as the goal happened. That is 100% without a doubt a goal. a goalie has to play the puck if he isnt being pressured or else its a delay of game penalty on the goalie and there is no whistle if the goalie isnt being pressured (you see this all the time on a dump in, the goalie will wait with the puck on his stick and cover it only when the opposing team gets close). The shot came from the blue line goalie saved it wasnt pressured so he had to give it up and its a goal on the other end. obvious goal, there is 0 controversy here. i was a professional hockey player and a goalie at that so...

This sorta happened to Ottawa last year, to Mads Søgaard. Except it wasn’t a 200 foot goal. Mads covered the puck, everyone stopped playing, he lifted his hand, thinking the whistle had gone. But the whistle never went. Even though he covered it for a good 3-5 mississippis while opposing players were on him. So the other team whacked the loose puck into the net. And it was deemed a good goal. The whistle had indeed never been blown.

In this instance, the home team's arena staff created a problem for the home team by playing the music. I wonder how this would have been dealt with if the home team's arena staff created a problem for the away team by playing the music.

Having played a lot of hockey, the general rule was "once the referee loses sight of the puck" the play is dead...maybe given a second or two if there's still movement. That puck was buried pretty deep, but as we see he still chose not to blow the whistle. Maybe that particular ref wants a scrums in front of the net, who knows? That's the problem! Another clear example of the inconsistent and generally poor refereeing in the NHL, as 999 times out of 1000, that play is blown dead. They need to get these refs in sync... its ruining the game

I think the whistle wasn't blow because there as a Canadians player between the ref and the goalie. He prevented he ref from seeing the goalies intentions, he didn't had a clear view to see if montembault had frozen the Puck or not, that or really wanted the play to continue to save broadcast airtime for the NHL.

@@danmac9336 Anderson was not skating, he was coasting. He did not leave his feet until the hit was completed. That's what happens when you skate at 40 kph and come to a sudden stop. It's called momentum. Hockey is a contract sport, nothing wrong with a clean, hard hit.

Yes in Hockey you play to the whistle..In Boxing its protect yourself at all times..So its on the players on the ice to be aware of the whistle..yeah the DJs noise didn't help but you have to be aware..At all times...

When he put the whistle up to his mouth he intended to stop play. All the time you hear that they intended to blow a whistle but had not yet so play should have been stopped and goal disallowed. I am a Lightning fan and fine with it as long as they are consistent.

Why not? No one was making a play on the goalie, he had no reason to hold it and the ref had no reason to stop play.

Every time a long shot gets smothered by the goalie, you will see at least one offensive player skate right up to the goalie, in case the puck is loose. In this case, they just all drifted away. Kind of a lazy play there.

Ref's mom never taught him the "3 second rule". Frozen pucks and food on the floor are a lot alike in this case.

I’ve done this several times. I always tell my goalies if you cover it and they don’t blow a whistle while the other team isn’t paying attention slide me the puck. It works every time. I’ll just start skating it down with no resistance, but never thought about shooting it. Ima do that next time.

Weirdest game ever.

The exact analogy for this situation in another sport is in football during plays everyone assumes the ball is dead, but a player realizes the whistle hasn't blown, grabs the ball, and starts legging it toward the end zone, running past oblivious members of the other team who don't realize what's happening until they see a player running passed them with the ball.

Always play to the whistle. There were no lightning players near the goalie so there was no reason to blow the whistle.

I don't think that is a fight worthy hit. Sure it looked bad in real time, but it was pretty clean. That 10 minute could have been a killer.

On the flip side of your explanation, how many times have referees blown whistles to end play early when the goalie was set to put the puck back into play? Too many times.
