Fox liked to put members of their "actors' stable" into roles in musicals. But unless the person was a trained musician their parts were usually dubbed. Romero's playing was done by Chummy MacGregor and Gleason's was by Doc Goldberg. Even star Lynn Bari's singing was dubbed by Pat Friday.

When I was a brat-kid in the early 1950's and this came on the radio, I did not like it, but move onward 70 years, many small but deadly wars fought in my own country and miles away, I realised that its the sentiment along with clean cut lyrics speaking about important to me things, home my gall, my kids, my safety, my health. To every one that in any way fought for this brat-kid, I say a heartfelt " THANK YOU SO MUCH!!" Let's enjoy this tune together shall we??

Watching Marion's zeal and playfulness, the amazing artistry of the Nicholas Brothers and all of it against the wonderful melody of Glenn's orchestra is simply amazing. Billy wrote some amazing charts for the band but they were so far ahead of their time Miller rarely performed them. Try to find an air check of "Harlem Chapel Bells" (not easy, unf.) - it sounds like it could have been done in the mid-50s. The current band's conductor Erik Stabnau has pulled out a few other May compositions as well.

The depressing thought is that they were a "finishing act" because of racism. If you look at this one and, say, Chattanooga Choochoo, you'll notice there's a clean break in the music right before the brothers come on and it sounds almost like the music could've ended there. That was to allow southern state censors to cut out their scenes so audiences wouldn't have to see Black performers. For the same reason, the brothers were usually hired as guest stars, so their names wouldn't have to appear on the bill in southern states, and all of Glenn Miller's band on film were white.

Songs like this and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas were hopeful, upbeat pleas in musical form that young men would return from war. As upbeat as this song is with all of its fun lyrical sincopation and upbeat chords, it's really a plaintive cry soldiers to be able to come back home. A lot of the songs from the forties that we enjoy share this family tree. They are fun songs to us, but back when they came our they were really pleas asking that soldiers at war could cone home whole and present and able to rejoin local communities that were so desperate for their return. Oh yeah, BTW these guys are amazing!

Precision dancing at its finest. The incomparable Nicholas Brothers were celebrated by their peers as the Greatest! They set the standard for excellence in themselves and for those that will eventually follow. Now, the Nicholas Brothers are “Dancing with the ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.” God bless

The band is sublime, as always. The Nicholas Brothers, are insanely good. To get up out of a split without using yours hands is tough enough. To do it a dozen times in a routine, just crazy!

The Modernaires. One the hottest, if not the best harmony groups to ever hit the airwaves. And Tex Beneke? If there is a definition of cool, this man is it. Sax player. Whistles like a bird in perfect pitch. And a voice as smooth as silk. And the tap dancers? Not sure who they are but goddamn. Never seen such smooth sailin. Absolute professionals. Now this was entertainment at its finest.🇺🇸

What great music there was back then! This was the music I grew up on! I'm 84 years old now! Anyone remember Martin Block and his radio program "Make believe Ballroom time"? The theme song for the program was written and recorded especially for Mr. Block and his radio program by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra! Mr. Block was the one who coined the name "Disc Jockey"!

I went my wife to Kalamazoo on a business trip and we had fun and took pictures. We were showing our pictures to friends and one of them actually said that she thought it wasn’t a real place, just made up for a song! Hahahahaha! And of course we played this song over and over while we were there. I wonder if people there love hearing it?

I went to college in Kalamazoo (Western Michigan University, class of 1973). I just happend to see that this film was on KZread but forgot that I had heard this song was the movie's finale. What a spectacular finale it was. I can see why it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song. What a combination: the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Modernaires , Tex Beneke and the fabulous Nicholas Brothers.
