I upgrade the battery life on the JBL Encore Essential (and why you may not want to do the same)

I did not intend to make a video for this but I had a camera on hand and decided to record. I did not put much effort into the filming process and unfortunately some steps were missed.
After doing this video I decided to try and add two cells and place them in the compartment with the mainboard. It worked exceptionally well. Here is a link to a photo of the end result on reddit:

@@jsalmont Hey, so there is room in the mainboard compartment to add more cells. I went with two additional cells (4 in total) and that was no problem. You could probably fit even more in there I imagine. At some point though the larger components on the right side of the mainboard may get in the way. Here is a reddit link where I posted a photo with the additional cells in the compartment. 4 cells is a massive improvement over the 2 cells from the factory. I would say a little more than double the run time since they are parallel and the discharge rate is halved on every battery. www.reddit.com/r/JBL/comments/yi9v8y/i_fixed_my_encore_essentials_short_battery_life/

I am currently reading how some people only get 3 hours with 50% volume and lights off on the regular encore. Very disappointing battery times, wish i was as technical with welding like you, might have to return the speakers if it is that bad, and wait for a future release that did not get sacrificed on purpose just so the other models would see no more uses

I only gained about 20% battery life really by upgrading the two cells. The type of music you listen to will have a pretty big affect on battery life as well. This thing has a ton of bass but that comes at a cost. You should be pretty happy with two non-essentials. With two you can run each a little less power and have the same volume as a single. If you don't care about weather or splashes while running them, one of those smaller portable power banks with a house plug is real nice for long term listening away from a normal outlet.

The type of music matters a lot as well. Heavy bass sucks power. Just spitballing but I would say an encore essential playing bass heavy music at full blast might last 3 hours if you are lucky. By the way, I did a far more effective battery mod by wiring an additional two cells in parallel but I did not have the tools for a nice clean precise soldering job with the thermistor transplant so I did not film a video of it. Ideally, I would use a Y-cable (insert), but unfortunately, I couldn't find one. How would the electrical setup be to connect the 2 batteries in parallel? Each battery has 4 wires (red/white/yellow/black). Would simply joining the matching wires into a single connector suffice? Or would I need to disassemble the batteries and solder them onto a single connector? If possible, I would appreciate a more detailed video on the subject.

I also managed to found extra space inside the cover to fit the cells, at the bottom cover. The result is amazing, today I used it to play on the streets (Im a musician myself), max volume, 7 or 8 hours straight - discharged only 40% of the battery - which means I could play 2 or 3 days continously - but it also takes ages to charge. • @0525ohhwell

The cells are in parallel so technically you can add as many as you can fit but there are only two thermistors per BMS so there is some limiting factor there as well besides just space (if you still want thermal protection). The Encore only has one battery pack so I am confused as to what you are asking. A battery pack is the combination of cells and Battery Management System. When you say you purchased "two 6200 mAh rated at 3.7v" do you mean individual 18650 cells? If so, I can guaranty you they do not actually have 6200 mAh capacity (NO 18650 cells have that capacity, it's all lies) and you may actually be downgrading your speaker. In any case, the most amount of cells I have been able to jam into my Encore Essential and maintain safety features is 4. It is entirely possible you may be able to tuck 6 into that cavity and still get the main board back on but then you would lose thermal protection on the 5th and 6th cells and 4 cells was perfect with pretty much all day battery life at a reasonable (60%) volume. I made a reddit post about it here. www.reddit.com/r/JBL/comments/yi9v8y/i_fixed_my_encore_essentials_short_battery_life/ I did end up going back in and getting rid of the connector since it was giving a bad connection on the thermistor wires. It's been amazing since I did that. Some people want a video on that but my god, my micro soldering skills are atrocious. Maybe I will order another battery pack and do a video just sorta explaining how to do it without actually doing it.

Well, at least they didn't make some sort of insane capacity claim. 6800 MaH is near the top end of capacity for two 28650 cells. The price is certainly nice but you just don't know the quality of the cells in that thing. If they are solid cells and you get the rated capacity at the power draw that the encore requires, yeah that will give you another 20% or so. If the cells are not quite as robust and crumble under a high c-state then you may get worse performance. Also, the only way I have found to REALLY improve the Encore's battery life substantially is to add two more 18650 cells and locate them in the cavity below the system board. I put a pic up on reddit and had a little bit of a breakdown in the comments. I also went back in and got rid of the stupid quick disconnect because it was messing with the reading from the thermistor. www.reddit.com/r/JBL/comments/yi9v8y/i_fixed_my_encore_essentials_short_battery_life/

@@bassfear_9952 Yes. In reality charging systems are pretty simple. They are set for a target voltage. In reality, you can use either a 3.6v or 3.7v li-ion cell. The BMS will just charge the 3.7 as if it was a 3.6. Heck you could install LiPo cells in there, but they would probably die due to a too lov voltage cutoff when discharged. But unless there is a timer, which there is not, the charging system will keep charging until it reads 4.2 volts. The 3.6v figure is not max voltage fully charged, it’s the voltage the cell operates at when discharging max amperage. But in essence you can stick as many cells in there in parallel as you can fit as long as they are the same cells. Never mix cells. That’s a fire waiting to happen. Same manufacture, same capacity, same voltage, same C ratings. How would you go about fitting six cells in there?

I'm playing around with the idea of an external power pack using four cells that can sit in the rear control compartment. That would give me 8 cells without altering the enclosure volume. A normal Encore has a bank of 7600 mah batteries and have a claimed 10 hours. It would be cool with 30800 mah. Additionally it will enable the amp to draw a lot more current which will control the drivers better at high volume.

Double posting with your reddit post. Quick question for those of us who aren't comfortable doing circuit level repairs with welding and soldering, is this a viable solution? Can I buy an official replacement battery, and then splice all the wires together with the original battery pack? This would mean there would be an original BMS on each battery pack though. Would that cause any problems? If so, how would you go about fixing this? I imagine you could break the wrap, desolder the BMS and thermistors, and then rewrap just the batteries, which kind of defeats the purpose.

So, I did read where one person (I think on the Reddit post) reported doing that and that it worked for them. That would certainly be the way to go. The only thing we do not conclusively know is if you retain thermal protection when you do that. IF it is as simple as a closed circuit on the data wires that is opened when the BMS detects too high of thermals, then the second cell will remain closed and defeat the protection. IF it is an open circuit that is closed to trigger the safety measures then that is fine. if it is some sort of actual data stream then who knows. By that of course I mean the protection where the speaker will turn off if the batteries get too hot during operations. The BMS itself would of course protect the cells it is responsible for during charging (or at least we hope it does). So anyhow, keeping the thermal protection when drawing from the batteries probably isn't a huge deal since I have never had mine trigger even while playing loud in the direct FL sun. Just something to think about I guess.

Do you think there's room for a pair of 26650 cells instead of the 18650 cells? That would mean using a pair of 5000mah cells for even longer play time.

Unfortunately no. There is some room under the main board but I don't think it will accommodate 26650 cells. I did add 2 more 18650 cells in parallel in there and the results are fantastic

@@AB-80X I don't know actually. I haven't used them long enough in a stretch for the 4 cell one to run out of power. I probably should one day. People have mentioned that the encore uses the same battery pack as one of the flips. If that is true, it would be a real easy way to add two more cells.

  • @0525ohhwell

I am not sure I understand your question. The largest capacity legitimate single 18650 cell is 3500 Mah. I believe. There is only officially room for two 18650 cells in the Encore's battery compartment. There is just enough room under the electronics board for an additional two 18650 cells which I did in the second speaker and the battery life is awesome but I slightly worry about the reduced cooling for the board. I didn't make a video on that one because I don't have skill/equipment for a clean removeal and splice when I moved the redundant thermistor to my breakout battery pack. So, if you are asking about using two of the "9900 Mah" 18650 cells, those are fake. They usually test closer to 1200 Mah at best.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked as well. They had nothing to identify who made the actual cells though of course so I couldn't pull up discharge specs. I am guessing they have a ton of those cells rolling around so they used them then labeled the resulting battery pack with a lower capacity because of the high power draw or something. I dunno. I am guessing hte non-essential uses some much higher quality 3400 Mah cells or something but like I said, I am not tearing that one down anytime soon. I have my frankenstein double battery life essential if I need long life away from power sources.

It is rated at 10 hours, so if you by that mean that you need to increase capacity to add two hours by that measure, not worth it. If you can find yourself an additional Encore pack, not Essential mind you, you can piggyback that onto the pack that is already there and fit it underneath the board.
