I have theorized that a Gray has made a pact with satan that he will always win eventually, but feels some of the pain experienced by the characters he controls

I like how that no matter how hard it gets, Gray never gives up. He keeps trying and trying even after it starts to hurt. It doesn't matter why he does it, either seeking the sweet validation of victory, or sheer spite, what matters is he keeps going until it works. We can all learn from him.
