I Turned Off My Honda Ridgeline Idle Stop! Here's What Happened
#automobile #diy
Reverse your annoying and often unnecessary auto shutoff mode in your 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline. Save battery life and wear and tear on misc. mechanical components.
It is fairly affordable and straightforward to do.

Hopefully you won't get idiots that come on here and say "Oooh look at this guy - claims to know more than the Honda engineers about batteries / starters". You and I both know what you did is the correct answer, and all new cars should be like my Audi in regards to the start/stop - it's a hard on/off that remembers the last position/mode, instead of Honda/Toyota that is a "default on / toggle".
Thanks for the video. Installed the bypass switch yesterday and so far it's working as expected. You made it look easy and it was! I see that this is less $$ than other options doing the same thing.

Awesome! Glad to hear it was worth recording for others.
I tell people its run by a computer and they do fail, my friend had it in a F-150, it shut the engine off at a stop light and when he had to move fast to not get rear ended the system failed to turn back on.... Let that sink in for a moment.

Yes sir. Honda already performed recall service on my vehicle for this very issue you described.
you're on the right track with reliability side of it, but it has more to do with flowing oil through the crankshaft bearings and connecting rod bearings during idle, versus engine completely stopped, not turning which means zero oil pressure. good fix!

Excellent, thank you.

The AGM batteries' price difference far exceed the minimal amount of fuel savings. It's just another gimmick to placate the "Green" crowd.
Honestly, i dont see the auto off/on being useful at any point. Unless you come across railroads often.
Good video. I may have done a few more car electronics than you Craig - I'd have tested the functionality before I snapped those 8 clips back in place. I've bought things like this that just didn't work out of the box before and I had to remove them. I will say this is about as easy as doing my wife's 2019 Highlander, except it required a fuseable link for the driver's side kick panel. Her car always being in "(A)" mode does not bother her in the least.

Ask me about putting the Apple CarPlay in that Audi. It was a "nightmare's dream".

The only time it's a pita is when I forget to push the stinking button and the truck shuts off.
Oooh look at this guy - claims to know more than the Honda engineers about batteries / starters 😋 Really though, I wish people were more honest and just said "I don't like it and I want it turned off" instead of "it will wear down my car". These systems have now been in cars for well over a decade and there's been no widespread premature failures of starters, batteries, or whatever. On the flip side, however, I would say that there are little fuel-saving benefits to these systems _for most people_ and wish they were "opt in" rather than forced on. But just say you don't like it and want to get rid of it... don't BS us with mechanic-bility. It's your truck, you can do what you want with it.

I never minded it, except for it being unnecessary. One Honda tech developed his own and marketed it.

Do you believe in lifetime transmission fluid? or 10,000 mile plus oil changes? I do not. I put one of these switches in my Passport (different brand) because I think it WILL prematurely wear out the starter and battery PLUS I hate the feeling of a delayed start.

@JP-jq1qx I would say no to lifetime transmission fluid changes. I did change my oil and differential fluid at the recommended intervals. Wasn't quite 10k miles for oil.

My wife's 3 year old Highlander Platinum AWD (2019 model - we bought brand new in Aug 2019) had her battery fail prematurely and was over $500 to get replaced. These start/stop systems require a EGM/EFB battery that's far more expensive, and the additional cost to replace far exceeds a typical $129 Autozone battery. In fact, people on Reddit have done estimated fuel savings with it enabled vice the upgraded battery charge, and the fuel savings nowhere near comes close. Huge fail. Our other 2016 vehicle's battery lasted over 8 years until I finally replaced it this summer. But, who am I to believe, my wallet or a rando commenter on the Internet? You ever replaced a starter in a car yourself? I have and understand how they work - do you?

"There's been no widespread..." Sounds like the lies we were told in November 2020 too. Well, it's not widespread doesn't mean it still doesn't happen; I have the receipts to prove it on ours.
i absolutely despise the idle stop..
