I turn a Nut into a tiny Adjustable Wrench
In this video I'm turning a stainless steel M20 nut into a tiny adjustable wrench. All three parts are completely made out of one single nut. First I turned the thread and the hexagon away on the lathe. After cutting a slit into it I was able to open it up with the help of a torch. A few heats later I had a very straight and flat piece of stainless steel. I first went then on the milling machine and milled the whole part to the final width of the wrench. I then cut of a piece with the hacksaw to make the body out of it. With a tiny t-slot endmill I was able to mill the t-slot very nicely with a very low feedrate and a lot of oil. After milling the square hole and drilling the deep 2.1mm hole I started to shape the outer contour. Then I moved on by making the movable part of the wrench. I milled it all in one operation with very careful steps to not risk and chatter marks or whatsoever. After filing the square bit round I sanded the rectangular part until it fitted nicely into the body. I then cut the M2 thread and cut the piece off with the hacksaw, assembled it with the body and sanded both parts flush. Then I started rounding off all edges with needle files, sandpaper and finished it with very fine steel wool for a brushed finish. All what's left to do now was making the knurled adjuster nut. For that I forged the remaining of the nut into a square piece, which I could clamp in the four jaw chuck on the lathe.I turned it round, supported it with a live center, put the knurling onto it, drilled and tapped the hole, chamfered it and parted it off. Then it was just a matter of quickly assembling the three pieces.
This was a very cool little project for me. I really like how it turned out. It's a very cool little item in my opinion.
Here's the link to the restoration video of the big adjustable wrench at the end of the video:

I had the 'big brother', actually. By a brand called 'King Dick' (which is pretty epic all by itself ;)). From somewhere between 1920-1930. (Found an ad for it in an old catalogue for fl. 1,- (one Dutch guilder. Aka 1 dollar. Back when money was worth something ;))
This brought back some nice PTSD of me hand-finishing the first 500 of these I ever sold. Truly fantastic work! Now I need to make an even smaller one for sale. IT'S ON!

As a machinist, I am completely stunned and awed by the incredible artistry in this video. Engineering and machining is an art🤩🤩🤩
Hello my mechanics! 🔧 Your video on turning a stainless steel M20 nut into a tiny adjustable wrench is nothing short of impressive! The level of craftsmanship and ingenuity involved in creating all three parts from a single nut is truly remarkable. Watching you skillfully use the lathe, torch, and milling machine to shape and transform the nut into the final product is a mesmerizing experience. The precision and attention to detail that you demonstrate throughout the process are evident.
My grandfather, a Swiss engineer and tool-and-dye maker, told me "If you want to know a machinist's worth give him a piece of steel and a file and see what he can make." This wrench is evidence of this machinist's worth. The results are stunning and the video is perfect. Thanks again for all of your efforts to share your artistry with us.

To me it's a fine display of the art of turning milling grinding and other skills working metals. This is no amateur's workshop with lathes and cutting machines. But it really is fascinating to watch. I once worked doing a menial job in a Microscope Factory and used to see the turners and millers doing their thing. There wasn't time to stand and stare and take in how skilled they were but now I see why they were higher paid than bench workers.
I have a weird obsession with tiny things, and this very much satifies that obsession, amazibg work!!!
I am so glad not only that you made this but that you shared it with us as a video!! I love how it came out. Amazing craftmanship

Machining small stuff is actually quite difficult and tests one's abilities to the max in some applications, especially when working with normal sized machinery (hence why you can find miniature lathes that can cost as much as a second hand (good) car). One of my first miniature projects was a small vise. Took me 3 re-tries to get it right. It's not as easy as it looks. One sneeze and you've milled away the whole project.
This makes me smile every time I watch it.
You never cease to amaze me! You sir, are a master craftsman.
Would love to see a video tour of your workshop ! I'd be so interested to see where you've incorporated some of your past restorations into your arsenal of tools that you use to then restore future projects. It'd be like going down a trip on memory lane :)
