You don’t hate running, you’re just out of shape. You hate feeling like shit, which you do when you run. Because you’re out of shape. You don’t know what you don’t know. I use to think the same, that I hated running, but it wasn’t that, now I can run 10ks casually and it’s no harder than walking. And occasionally I’ll feel excellent. And overall I’m a lot fitter and have much better energy, sleep and whatever else. It pays dividends.

@@willepooh I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who can run and run for a long hard time who hates running. At WORST you’re just indifferent to it at that level, you find it boring or prefer other forms of cardio. When you become good at running it’s not painful or hard, like I said, walking. If you can run a 5 minute mile, or a 40k and say “I hate running” then I’ll give it to you.

Now I am just trying to control my addiction to running. The euphoria lasts all day and I have so much more positive energy.....In my culture (hell in lotsof cultures), om Diné, my grandpa was a medicine man (R.I.P.) and always made me run before the sun came up, and made me run twice a day, not too hard. And when I would lay down to sleep, he would ask/tell me "you know that happy feeling you get when you lay down? Part of the running prayer in the morning was to yell (In thankfulness of "Diiyin (God) blessing you with another day of life) before you turn around and turn your back to the sun. Oh and you are always supposed to run East. Every morning. You don't have to go hard, just as long as you show your appreciation

Really great video Mark! I loved how you structured this video. . .great to see sections of the course inter-cut with testimonial-like insight! I just started dabbling with Ultra Events myself at 46 years of age and I had to laugh every time you voiced the exact thoughts I find in my head while running! I'm finding that after all the prep-work and training, the hardest part is always silencing that inner-voice that wants to remind you that it would be easier to simply stop! :) Thanks for the great video, I just subscribed!

Thanks! I always find it good to anchor a video from back in the garage where you can give some thought behind what's going on - often, out in the event itself - your mind is elsewhere!!

What a great achievement. Thank you for taking us through the race like this, enduring the pain and suffering so that we don't have to, or at least think twice before singing up for an ultra. Especially the after-race-recovery bit made me laugh, sorry for that.

Amazing video, really unique style. Congratulations on the finish! "I don't know where I am, but I can't afford to live here. " That cracked me up. Running 50ks undertrained is my favorite hobby! I'm thinking 50 miles next year. Sadly as an insomniac, my average body battery reading on a normal day is 35 or less. It'll drop to single digits at least once a week... and that's even on recovery weeks! I've learned that if I want to accomplish anything in my life, I simply have to do it tired. Your channel is hugely motivating, I hope you plan on more ultras of any distances!

Great effort, thanks for filming and sharing it. I've got a 100 mile bike ride coming up that I am similarly unprepared for and will use the tips you shared to get through it. As a participant told me at the start of a long gravel race "the key is to start easy and slow down from there".

100 mile bike ride - have you ever done a 50+ mile ride before? The reason I ask is if not, to make sure your saddle is setup as perfectly as possible - not uncommon to see people suffering chronic saddle pain sliwing them down long before their legs begin to give up! It's real good fun though, hope it goes well 👍

@@stephen_101 Good advice. I've done several 100 milers on this bike (Ridley Orion 2012) and I'm happy with the saddle. I just haven't been training nearly enough for this one.

Awesome effort Mark. Well above average as others have said. Timely one for me. I'm starting to plan my longest ever bike ride. I have until mid December to train. Aiming for 400km (with significant climbing) my longest previously is 220km. So a timely reminder to put in solid prep work is awesome. Thankyou.

Loved it! Huge kudos for the determination and finishing. Reminded me a lot of the one marathon I've ever run (London in 2016). I'd never run more than 7 miles before getting my place. My "training" consisted mostly of occasional 2 mile runs to and from work. Then I did something like 8 miles, 11 miles, 13 miles, 18 miles and 20 miles on consecutive Sundays. Then nothing for the whole month leading up to the event. For the first 9 miles I was _flying_ (for me). Wheels started coming off after 12 miles, even more so after 16 miles; and at 20 miles I just wanted it to be over. Managed to rally towards the end and "sprint" for the line. When I crossed the line my body basically said "OK, nope" and I could barely move. Hardest physical thing I've ever done. (Time was 4:59:48 for the curious, which makes me a sub-5 marathon runner! ;) )

Really interesting summary and I recognise a lot of what you went through. Brought back a lot of memories of the TP100 .. I experienced that lack of energy on a 100 mile race (I'd trained for) and I believe that for me it was down to work stress playing with my head.. went back the next year less prepared mentally but happier and did it.
