Ойындар

Competitive Pokémon is a completely different beast to normal Pokémon games. and i, someone who has never played competitive Pokémon before, tried to learn it.

So I’ve been playing Pokémon since ‘98. This is the first year that I’ve been playing VGC seriously and it is absolutely insane how difficult the transition is. Learning how to properly calc EVs, lead teams, swap correctly, build support sets, build teams, choose four, have the right items for your roles, check meta threats, account for speed tiers and modes like tailwind, gravity, trick room, and terrains. Learn the type chart and the special interactions like prankster doesn’t work on dark types, ghost Pokémon can swap out of shadow tag, grass Pokémon are immune to spore and powder moves, poison Pokémon pick up toxic spikes when swapping in, etc. Now add Tera where any Pokémon can be any type. Offense or defense which is better who knows probably both? But if you lose your Tera or burn it to early you lose, but if you use it early and perfectly you win immediately. Now learn all the abilities and what is popular. Is the dragonite inner focus or multiscale, which Pokémon stop priority moves with their ability, who is unaffected by thunder wave and who can I intimidate? the list goes on and on. Even just playing on ladder with closed team sheets you see something and immediately have to guess ok there’s a flutter mane. Did I see a booster? No. Ok then it might be focus sash or it might be pixie plate, life orb, or even choice specs. If it’s the first two it could have protect. Does it protect turn one or Tera fairy and blow me away? What if it’s imprison trick room and it’s bulky water Tera slow flutter? It’s tough man, luck is a big factor and you spend most of the game mitigating that

The best way to improve in vgc is to just learn what every Pokémon does like the type of playstyle and their role on the field. Doing this will greatly increase your predictions in game and know what are threats on the field.

Just got recommended this video and I really enjoy watching people learn and have fun playing a game I love. I agree starting out playing VGC (or even singles) can be overwhelming because you'll get overloaded by a lot of information. You did a really good job at looking for where to get information like Pikalytics. When you start out, it's best to just know what your team wants to do just like what you did by watching Pokesports' video (since you still don't know what the other team is all about). It's like forming a gameplan you stick to to achieve your goal. As you play games, you'll get better at knowing what and what not to do and will also help you get familiarized about the mons the enemy bring against you. It's an information game, the more you know, the more advantage you have. It's a long process, but trust me, the more you play, the more it'll be second nature to you to know what a mon or team does by just having one look at it. Subbed! I see potential just by watching you play, would like to see you play more (of course, play anything you want, it's your channel after all). I'll check your other videos as well, your commentary seems good :33

I’ve been playing Pokèmon forever, and my brother has too, but he plays competitive, I don’t. When he moved to college a few years ago, he gave me a little guide. The guide taught me basic information, but not calculating IVs or stuff like that, so this video and the comments help a lot.

My best experience so far is random battles on pokemon showdown. Each team you get is built up of catergories of Pokémon, those categories being bulk, damage, stall, setup, support etc. Knowing the categories allows you to figure out what each mon is used for by looking at the moves and abilities. And i choose random battles because it allows me to face and use multiple different mons, strategies and items to be able to learn the diversity. For example, knowing that slowbro has a mega evolution and has access to calm mind allowed me to predict my opponent, so using a slower mon i caught him in an encore trap of calm mind and hit him physically. He forfeited because i destroyed his win condition. The mon i was using? Emolga.... Id love to see a journey series, maybe road to masters series or something. Just arrived because this vid was recommended but sub'd to see more!!!!

6:37 TR is typically a good Dondozo answer since Dozo doubles it’s speed w/Tatsugiri. Since Cress is so bulky it can def live a couple hits from Dozo and just click lunar blessing over and over next to like iron hands or something

I mean lol, yes Pokémon is riddled with goofy hacks and luck but in all honesty it _does_ more or less balance out. You just need to 'condition' to it and get over your fear and the intimidation factor and start busting out a few smart Over-predictions to put fear and doubt back into your opponent's mind. That's how you can push the initiative a lot.

I always play ranked in games and i just bought violet a month and a half ago and it’s my first time ever playing a pokemon game. I have mainly just roamed around and done raids after finishing the story but i just started playing ranked (singles) and I’m on rank 6 but it’s getting a bit hard. My biggest problem is knowing type interactions because I have almost no idea if I’m gonna get super effective on me because the only way I know is that I’m slowly learning the interactions.

Hax ability cheese and random tera types to really shit on any lead you have. Its really a headache and you will end up using the same damn team everybody else is using.

I'm not gonna watch this, so maybe this comment winds up out of pocket, but, yeah. There's not another game like Pokémon; at best like half of your skills are going to transfer over if you've trained something relevant like luck management or player reads, and even then, you've got to learn the other skill and marry the two. And that's saying nothing about the very Pokémon specific requirements - you need to be able to, at a glance, identify what the likely roles of all the Pokémon on your opponent's team are, simulate how those pieces line up against your pieces, and then develop a gameplan to cover their strengths and exploit their weaknesses in a coherent and cogent way - again, all from team preview, and then again any time you receive new information. I think, optimistically, a normal person with a baseline understanding of the relevant mechanics and Pokémon should expect it to take maybe a year to reach competence and a decade to reach mastery in the format of their choosing.
