I think the whole smell thing depends on the person. Personally, I can’t smell it, it just smells like regular noodles to me. However, I made this for my friends once and a few of them complained about the smell. So it varies from person to person.

Wow, I fell in love with luo si fen seven years ago. I prefer having it on street not only because of the complex packaging of fast food version, but also because there are so many ingredients can be chosen to add, such as fried tofu, duck‘s feet and pig's feet. They are fabulous when they meet the soup.

There are actually reasons to seperate the package, as they belong to different steps during the cooking. If you read instructions carefully, peanuts and pickles shouldn't be boiled together with the soup. They are actually toppings after having noodle in the bowl. For the fried tofu, someone like to boil them in the soup, someone like to eat them as topping. I am the topping one. I am glad to see you can enjoy Luosifen. To be honestly, half of my friends can't accept the smell, but the other half are super fan. Also there's a note to your dad. Luosi is not snail, like the ones running in the garden. Its name is called "Margarya" in English, and they are living in the river or in the water farmland. They can be easily caught by a net. Their meat are tiny but very delicious. In old days, Luosifen is very popular among the poor people. After the meat is taken out from Luosi, the shell is useless and can't be eaten. The poors collect the shells to make soup and add noodle to the soup, and later on they create Luosifen. I recommend the instant Luosifen from Liziqi's brand. They are supper delicious, and all my family like it. Anyhow, the one you have chosen is also very good!

snail basically means 蜗牛 in Chinese, however 螺蛳 is definitely another completely different kind of creature. 螺蛳 is more like small conch that lives in freshwater.

英语里面，所有带壳的腹足纲gastropod螺类动物都叫snail，land snail是蜗牛，freshwater snail是淡水螺（river snail也是淡水螺），sea snail是海螺。 所有不带壳的这类动物都叫slug蛞蝓，也分land slug鼻涕虫，freshwater slug淡水蛞蝓，sea slug海蛞蝓。 每一种蛞蝓slug和本家族近亲的那一类螺snail的关系其实比跟其他家族蛞蝓的关系要更近一些。只不过都没有壳，所以都叫slug。 另外还有背上带着一点壳，但是不能缩进去的介于螺类和蛞蝓之间的过渡态transitional动物，叫做semi-slug半蛞蝓。

Love your video. This noodles is my hometown special (Guangxi), and I am very proud to see many people around the world enjoying it. One thing to note, the snail in the soup is not the normal garden snail you are talking about. It is actually a kind of water snail that attaches to rocks/ship surface for the most of their life. It's more like the Escargot in the French dish. One thing I didn't notice for the longest time eating the noodles is the amount of plastic they use. Now that you brought it up, I actually feel bad about eating it so often.

lol Your dad's facial expression was gold on hearing snail soup base. Though river snail is not an incorrect name for 螺, I think it can be referred to as a river conch for better appetizing imagery. Otherwise, snail, which reminds us of 蜗牛, would be quite upsetting for anyone to stomach it. (Though we have had French escargots...) As for the smell, I do always mistaken it for our dog peed in our kitchen every time my sister cooks it. And agree with you 100% on the amount of plastic you would find in many Chinese products' packaging...people to need to raise awareness about these.

Yeah! Finally the goodies from Guangxi where I came from! Well Done Amy! Hope you enjoyed that. Actually in Guangxi there are two versions of Luosifen, one with actual snails meat in it and second one they only use the snails to make the soup.

I also love Luosifen! Interestingly, before this video I had no idea that it was known as a stinky noodle, and it never crossed my mind that it was stinky. I wonder if its (a) cultural (do we grow up with similar smells), or perhaps (b) genetic (ex: only some people notice a foul smell in their urine after eating Asparagus).

“螺蛳”(luosi) is actually not snail. They are very different. Luosi is more like clam. It's aquatic and its shell is very very hard, while snails have very weak shell.

“螺蛳”(luosi) is a kind of fresh water snails. Basically the difference between snail and clem is that all snails have single shell, while all clems have double shells.

I got addicted to this dish because of you!! Im usually a meat eater but this noodle wow! It's got all the flavours you are looking for.

What a great video!! I heard about this dish in a Chinese drama I watched and was intrigued. I'm also going to China soon and I'm excited to try it for myself. Maybe I'll give it a go at a restaurant to avoid all of that packaging though - truly excessive on the plastic!

Started eating it when I was young (around 20 years ago) in Shenzhen Huaqiangbei, and loved it. Although it was not popular at all during those days, but Luosifen is always the second best noodle I would think of (after Guilin rice noodle). Now Huaqiangbei changed a lot, and I can't find that canteen anymore, but still, that was my memory. Right outside my living district, there is a Luosifen canteen and a Guilin Rice Noodle canteen, just 2 shops apart, but having the same brand QiangJi... Love your videos~

NOOOOO!! I tried this one before, but I feel it's not the real taste of Luosifen. Smelly and spicy is the soul of Luosifen, but they didn't do both

I love all the strong smelling foods, lol. Last summer I was travelling in Guilin and ate luoshifen. The toufu skin and duck feet are the best of it.

I used to have LuoShiFen with my roommates outside my university almost every week. It is a cute choice for supper. Hope you will enjoy it. Have a nice day!

Exactly. Loving your immediate realisation, Amy. The very thing that stops me from eating these instant luoshifeng is all the soft plastics in the packaging. Most of the soft plastics for the sources will be contaminated so most likely can't be recycled at all. Much much better to enjoy it in the restaurant and support the local business.

I remember my first and only encounter with this thing in my friend's home in Beijing. He ordered a takeaway of luosifen and the moment he opened the package I genuinely thought the sewage pipe exploded or something, for I didn't know any food could smell like that.

I watched Put Your Head on My Shoulder on Netflix and the main role Momo loved these River Snails. I'm intrigued to try now..

My favorite noodles ever. I used to think at first it was smelly but after cooking them over and over I got to say I love the smell. Sorry, I do love the smell. Luosifen is in my grocery card weekly. I love it! Luosifen + Tsingtao beer + Netflix it is my fav combo

In my hometown, we actually also just eat stirfried river snails with sour bamboo shoots and spices. It’s quite nice to eat them. Some places actually sell you the river snail meat too, and they taste quite nice.

This food appears in a corner of my university. And it smells really bad when I went through it. But, After several times of Eating, I think it could be delicious

Really want to try this. Will look out for it in the Chinese supermarket. Uk chinese supermarkets usually supply Cantonese food, Australian chinese supermarkets and chinese restaurant seem a lot more versatile. Thumbs up for another great video always look forward to watching them 🍲😋

Strange how your video pop up in my feed, I just finished watching a cdrama called "put your head on my shoulder " one of the main character (Xing Fei) loved smelly snail rice noodles (Luo Si Fen). Thank you for actually describing your experience with the dish. From my experience pickled bamboo shoots does have an odor.

Every time my sis cooks luosifen at home, my mom will definitely yell at her:" That stinks! Stop it!"

But I personally don't like the instant packaged one you purchased from the supermarket lol, it is branded with an extra bag of crawfish sauce which has nothing to do with its OG recipe. I'd recommend the brand "柳全“, it seems like the most cheapest priced one on the market yet the most authentically tasting one!

@@Shenzhou. Then the French charge a ton of money for it; it's considered "gourmet" and you have to get it in "high end" restaurants. They make the same thing in Chinatown NY, and it's reasonably priced and there's no fanfare around it. I like it better that way.

Had this when I stayed in Liuzhou, never thought it smelled bad, it has a unique smell but when you're cooking it yourself that's where you'll get more of a smell from my experience, good dish overall!

I love luosifen! 🤣it’s so good and smells good too (for me personally) even if the first time trying and told that it smells (i would recommend 好欢螺 “Hao Huan Luo” as this brand gives of stronger smell even tho I absolutely love it 🤣)

Just want to add that this is the standard amount of packaging in China usually (if not more), especially when it comes to online shopping. It's really ghastly.

Ehm, there is no big deal with snail, in fact French has snail in their top menu (escargot montorgueil). About the packaging, not only his type of noodle has many small packets inside.but also a lot of other kinds of instant noodle (Japanese, Korean, Indonesian etc). do.

Well, the smell of the noodle comes from the bamboo instead of the snail. The instant Luoshi noodle is also quite different from other instant noodles lol. At least you have to boil the noodle for 10-15 mins.
