As a former maid, I learned that you always start at the top and work your way down--ceiling, fans, railings, window sills/windows, then furniture, then floors. Use the same cleaning supplies for everything so you aren't using 1 thing for windows/mirrors, another for stoves, another for floors and on and on---try to use multi-purpose cleaners or, actually, just vinegar and water. Always use lint free cloths, or paper towels you can toss out. This method just makes things go much faster and smoother.

The vinegar is fine unless you have polished wood flooring/tables (which we do) and it won't help you on painted surfaces like wooden windowsills. So different products are often necessary.

One thing my mom taught me about dishes is this: dishes made while cooking can be cleaned and put away while you wait on things to cook, and dishes made after eating should be cleaned and put away after you eat each time. This leaves no pile of dishes to build up and is probably why it's left off of most cleaning routines because it's assumed you wash them and put them away after your meal, snack or while you wait for your meal to cook after the prep.

This is what I try to do but sometimes ( everytime) after eating I wanna just sit and let my food I just ate settle and then I can get back to it in about 10 minutes... and then poof there goes the evening and I forgot to do the dishes. I try to always get the dishwasher at least loaded and ran overnight though and normally I can just finish washing the pots and pans before I start it.

Yes and that adds time, not much but it does add. It’s still an hour instead 45 mins. I try to get everyone to rinse their own dishes and put them in the dishwasher right away. It almost never works. It’s frustrating that I’m the only one cleaning. It’s overwhelming with working a full time job. I’m gonna try this and try to get each of in a room for the 30. Although I’m SURE they will just sped their time waking in a circle. 😖

I have a tip from my Mum. Don’t just put your freshly washed and dried washing in the basket for folding later. Just fold them when you take them off the line or out of the dryer. Saves a step. Don’t double handle if you can help it. I resisted for so long but it really does help

Ahh, but then I have two stories of narrow, cluttered staircase to ascend. I DO that (out of the drier, fold, into basket) because then it doesn't matter if I can't get the basket up the stairs immediately. My point is - I usually end up having to fold twice. By the time I've manhandled folded washing upstairs - it needs folding again. Also, folding out of the drier really knackers the backbone and hips. Double baskets, sitting down downstairs, really helps that but then there are two baskets to prep back for the utility area. It is a good tip, though, for most people.

I completely agree with this tip! One thing that has made laundry more manageable for me is using a drying rack instead of the dryer for most things. I tied up some rope to make a mini clothesline and shirts go right on hangers and get hung up there. I can put socks right next to each other on the drying racks which makes them easier to find. Like items get hung close by and are basically already folded in half. Also, not relying on things drying so quickly means I'm more likely to stay on top of it!

Mother of 6 children here. I totally agree with you. I fold as I pull out of the dryer and I use those big blue Ikea bags to put the folded laundry in and haul the clothes up the stairs. I have a closet rod in my laundry room and my hubby's shirts are hung right up (it's essentially his closet, for his shirts anyway). As I get upstairs I put away the clothes, room by room in my flow of traffic. If I do a load a day, it is not much work. As kids get older, I place clothes on their beds for them to put away. ( yeah, sometimes you gotta remind them, or incentivize it). Later, they can do their own laundry, but I have found that I have had to give out a specific schedule for their washing, Like "Joey=laundry Tuesday, after school." I have them set the timer for 45 minutes so they know when to move the clothes to the dryer and set the timer again for when the dryer finishes. I really dislike finding clothes in the dryer when I need to swap mine over.

Is there anyone else like me, who spends more time watching cleaning tips videos than ACTUALLY CLEANING?? 😸 I also (almost) never clean during the week (except dishes, but that's a given), and save it all up til Saturday. Yeah I know it's harder that way, and I spend a lot more time cleaning that way, but seriously I'm up at 5:30 a.m. to exercise, and then after a fast shower and breakfast I go to work and don't get home till 6:00 most days. By then I'm too damn tired to give a shit about cleaning. I also never buy takeout or eat processed convenience foods, it's all homemade (whole food plant-based) so I batch prep on Sundays. So I am interested in trying a better method for cleaning, hence why I started watching these videos. I'll give it a try one of these days. 😺

I think the difference between UK and US washing machines are where you'd find it difficult to fold every day. Uk washing machines seem to hold a lot less as we often have smaller machines in the kitchen under a counter and hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer (many have them but it's cheaper to hang outside). For reference, my machine can handle 1 set of bedding only and that's probably pushing it to the weight maximum. Doing 1 wash a day keeps on top of the washing but does only take a few minutes to fold everything, unless theres loads of socks! 😊

Tip for laundry - consider not folding all pieces of laundry. I've gone to a method where I just toss things like undergarments and pajamas in a predefined space (I'm using storage cubes) without folding, and I do the same thing for things that don't wrinkle or I don't care if they wrinkle. Then I hang as much as possible. The main things I fold are cloths, towels, and certain T-shirts. That has taken the time to do laundry down -significantly- and I almost never have the issue of "uncared for" laundry anymore. Got this tip from a KZread mom who had like 13+ children. Her engineer husband was the one who came up with the idea.

I’ve always used the wash dishes as you go - while cooking. By the time we sit down to eat most of the dishes are already done ( or the dishwasher is running because there was enough for a load). Then we do up The few remaining dishes after eating then wipe down. I remember doing dishes when I was very young, mom instilled the importance of keeping the kitchen clean.

A laundry tip I implemented that saved me time and annoyance was to wash everyone’s clothes separately- so no time wasted looking at an item deciding which child’s, and so quick and easy to put in the basket and put away. In this way, daily laundry works bc loads are shorter too!

Ok I’m not a cleaning expert or by any means super organized but I just want to add that, for me, it helps to purchase items for the home that have less designs, patterns, and colors such as neutral carpets, couches, curtains, chairs etc. So essentially, major furniture or comforters that cover large areas like beds I try to stick with solid neutral colors like beige. Having too many colorful and patterned things can look cluttered and can add to the overall disorganized feel of the space. Once I’ve got a good handle on things, I’ll bring out the patterned bedsheets etc. This method helps me a lot. Im still working on tackling the piles of laundry though. I think the advice on getting rid of clothing etc is a great idea as we are all always buying clothes every year anyways. Thank you for this fun video. You’re an awesome mom!!!

I’m in the UK and follow this method. I find it works really well and as your home becomes cleaner, you really don’t always spend the full 30 mins and yet I can tick off everything on the lists. Except the kitchen. That always takes the full 30! A lot of people add either bathrooms or dining rooms to the weds hallway day as that seems to be the quickest one to get through once you’re on top of it. The final change I made was a kitchen counter wipe down as a daily task.

The dishes part made me LOL. Man they pile up quickly. We now do dishes every day as part of dinner (clean up). As a mom of teens - y’all, start those kids EARLY! I have two teens so one sets/clears the table and puts food away and the other does the dishes. They switch each week. It’s wonderful. Then I just have to go behind and tidy any last minute things (or wash the dishes that have to soak) and start the dishwasher. That works for us.

Good luck! How to ADHD has some good videos on concepts for making your space ADHD friendly. There are some examples, like she did a tour of her house, but she mostly focused on how to figure out what you need to do for your space which is why I say concepts and not hacks or tips. I'll see if I can find the specific videos, but her channel is probably a good place to start researching. I don't have much advice on the autism part since I don't have it, but I'm sure there are some similar KZread channels out there for autism. Good luck! Home Tour: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqOnvMquj7yvnJM.html Clutter Advice (says I haven't watched this 🤷‍♀️) kzread.info/dash/bejne/YqF31JetodfPfco.html I haven't watched this one, but didn't want to lose your comment and I'm on my phone, but it looks interesting. Am I Messy?: kzread.info/dash/bejne/laKTy9hsoaivXbg.html Also, it's possible what I am remembering are bits and pieces from other videos that weren't overall about house organization, so I don't know. I’ve never been officially diagnosed, but a lifetime of behavior patterns and my absolute disassociation from time would indicate I would probably be diagnosed with it. I think the reason for the dishes not being part of the cleaning routine is that they're kinda part of making meals. They are not listed either. So the activity of preparing the meal, eating the meal, and doing the dishes, is kinda one thing. I used to wait until the evening to clean up the kitchen and do the dishes, and now I just consider it part of the meal effort. Much easier to tackle this way.

I’ve been using this system for almost a year. I will say, as it becomes routine, you don’t necessarily think of the dailies as “chores”. I added “Shine the Sink” to my daily list. If I shine it, I gotta empty it. So, dishes get done. And I really like a shiny sink. What becomes difficult for a while is I tend to look for projects on weekends as well. Then I don’t get a day off.

I follow a hybrid of several cleaning methods with my own twist, I think there's no perfect system that works for everyone and it's best to adapt it to you own needs. I agree that most methods underestimate the time many daily tasks actually take (i.e. dishes, and just regular everyday cleaning in the kitchen). Or maybe I'm too picky and I want to be too thorough. For example, for me changing the bed sheets absolutely includes vacuuming the mattresses and pillows, and since I'm already standing there with the vacuum I just change to the dusting brush and dust bedside tables, etc and then vacuum the floor. We do this on Sundays, so the kids help change their sheets, and my eldest even vacuums his own room. This way cleaning the bedrooms does not have to be part of my tasks on weekdays (and we foster shared responsibility). Regarding laundry, I've started doing one load (almost) every day, and I love it. There is no way it takes an hour (unless you're ironing a lot, which I hate and avoid). I fold the clothes as I take them out of the dryer (5 min, timed) and I have 2 bins into which I sort the folded clothes: one for me and my husband, one for the kids. Our laundry room is in the basement so I don't bring the clean laundry up everyday, instead I wait until the laundry bins are full and then I carry them upstairs to put away (my husband and eldest kid put away their own clothes). Some other things that have made my life easier and cut a lot of time: using the vacuum for dusting (surfaces, tables, shelves, baseboards, lamps, etc); "clean as you go" in the kitchen (I wash everything as soon as I'm done using it, or while things are cooking), scrubbing the shower while I'm in it; involving the rest of the family more/delegating tasks; adopting the northern European bed style (fitted sheet and duvet cover, no top sheet, the duvet cover counts as a top sheet and therefore needs to be washed every week, making your bed takes 10 seconds with this setup and any little kid can do it); and most of all, getting a robot vacuum. Seriously, Mother's day is coming up, you all deserve one of these. Make sure it has a HEPA filter, though. I run it every day in the kitchen, dining room and entryway, and rotate it through out the week in other areas of the house. It's not for deep cleaning but it's a lifesaver for everyday cleaning and keeping the house clean for longer. Mine has a mop attachment, which does an OK job as long as there's no stuck on food on the floor, but again, it's for maintenance cleaning. It also helps to do 2 cycles for a better performance (meaning the robot goes over each room twice).

My water pressure isn't great, though, and I wear rubber flip flops in the shower - so I lay down a scrubby pad and push it around with my feet. Flylady morning routine...similar to the quick 15 minute daily tasks of organized mama. The flylady focuses on one room a week vs. organized mom focuses on one room daily. I had been doing this with the flylady checklist because I have a large family and messy toddlers and need each room hit daily/weekly not monthly. The flylady has the weekly home blessing whereas organized mom has a Friday special job. What I do and has worked well here is having a weekly home blessing AND having a seasonal cleaning where I take a whole week from homeschooling and focus on cleaning and painting. Flylady has an awesome evening routine requiring a shiny sink...and this has helped here so much! The kitchen gets used more than any other room and needs a baptismal nightly. Even with decluttering...aka living very basic, good routines, and daily/ weekly work...the reality here is that it is better but humans still live here (10 of them🤣) and in a smaller home it is always needing something done, but we can have peace knowing when something is scheduled to be done and focus on what matters here when we have done the important things...and that is the people. I love how much love and fun you show with your son! Thanks for showing us this new routine, with flair🤓

My grandmother had nearly the exact same dining room credenza as yours! I'd never heard of this system and I think that there are a lot of positives! I follow Dana K White's (A Slob Comes Clean website and podcast and videos) book "How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind" system. She has 4 daily tasks and the first one is Do the Dishes! She doesn't even mention making your bed and the logic is that I can function in a home with an unmade bed, but if I don't do the dishes, the whole house will go to heck. lol! The other daily tasks are sweep the floor (because we just stop seeing stuff on the floor), pick up the clutter in the bathroom and do a 5 Minute Pickup. And then there are weekly tasks laundry and bathroom and dusting, etc. You are doing sooooo good!!! I'm so happy that you are figuring this out while you and your son are young. I didn't get it together until I was nearly 60! So now, I'm working on my Swedish Death Cleaning - lol! PS... I do make my bed during the day, most days! I actually make my bed every day because I can't sleep in a rumpled up bed, but it doesn't really count if I'm making it right before bed.

There's only two of us and don't have enough laundry worth doing a load a day. We're already on a routine to at least do that one Saturday morning before errands. Dishes on the other hand do pile up everyday for just two people, it amazes me. I also don't really have an entryway, it opens directly into the living room and don't have stairs either (thank you single level house). There is a side room that we use for storage that gets cluttered a lot, I'll swap that room out for entryway.

Great video!! Dishes.... sigh.... yeah. People with dishwashers can never understand. For me, I started washing them a couple times a day. That led to cleaning them as I go. Whenever I am in the kitchen waiting, I am washing or putting dry away. That probably sounds kinda crazy, but now dishes take a third of the time, and it never gets overwhelming. Dishes after dinner is a bigger job, but I do it right away and once I get the water going it is not so bad. Oh I also cheat and watch videos on my cell phone to distract me. The transformation has given me energy to work on the rest of my house. Thank you again for sharing this routine. I am gonna give it a try.

Congrats on developing a great routine!!! I didn't live in a house with a dishwasher until I was nearly 50. And it didn't solve my dishes problem. :( The only thing that helped was getting in the habit of loading and unloading and hand washing the pots and pans that don't fit in there. It's more about the routine and habit vs the appliance. It's sort of like using the laundry mat vs having a washing machine at home. You can still end up with GIANT piles of laundry.

Two things that changed my life: 1. Dishes - start the dishwasher every night. Every morning, I start my oatmeal in the microwave and in 6 minutes, my dishwasher is empty and my breakfast is ready. NO dishes get put in the sink throughout the day - they all get put in the dishwasher as they are used. By night time, the dishwasher is full and I start it before I go to bed. Repeat every day. So dishwashing is 6 min/day. Anyone that puts dishes in the sink is shot. My sink is always empty and my kitchen always looks cleaner. 2. Laundry. I keep two baskets by the washer. One darks. One lights. Every night I gather the laundry and toss it into one of the two bins and start one bin in the washer (for example, the darks). The next morning when I wake up, I transfer the clean darks from the washer to the dryer and it drys while I'm in the shower, doing breakfast/getting kids out, etc. An hour later, I fold the one load of darks and put them away. Then at night gather all and wash the lights. The next night, 1 set sheets. So, in about 15 min a day, all my dishes and laundry are handled. But, the rest of the house is a mess, so I'm printing out the organized mom method today! Thanks!

Remember to have the kids help and let them know the system. My mom and grandma, kicked me out of the house to clean. I realized when living alone, I hsd no idea how to clean. I had an idea, but no system. Didn't know baseboards need cleaning. How to clean oven glass. So it's good to learn. And teach them to cook. When teens, they can cook a family meal and get praise for it. It's so when living alone, they don't need to rely on fast food, Ramen noodles & junk food.

I like your laundry method... mine is more on the go, but your comment re the rest of the house being a mess made me laugh! Me too!!! I am on top of dishes, 99% of the time, and laundry...but the rest of the house. Not so much.... I always move the laundry to the floor with the bedrooms/clothes in every house I have lived in. Makes life SO much easier. Or on the middle floor of the house but NOT in the basement. I learned that was possible when my uncle moved the washer dryer into a spare bedroom CLOSET for my grandmother. It took up half her closet as it was one of those apartment style deals, dryer on top... but a life changing realization for me. And even better if one has a walk in closet, hers was just a double door size. Life changing!!! And now, just the 2 of us, I put the washer in the bathroom, and I put our barn work clothes in baskets on a shelf and our regular clothes in an Ikea organizer, ALL in the bathroom. I find I put clothes away when the effort is minimal. But the rest of the house... we do a once a week clean together, for an hour. He does floors and vacuums downstairs and I do the bathroom... so the rest I have to do as I can. Which I am struggling with. So, I am thinking this organized mom thing might help a lot with that.

@@2Ryled Agree, once children are of a certain age, they can help. I think at 4 or 5 they can start with just really simple helping tasks, and from there they can learn more and do more. By the time I was in my mid teens, I knew how to prep and cook quite a number of dishes. And I'd been ironing clothes on my own for years by then. I'd grown up helping with housework - everything from washing dishes by hand, doing laundry (learned to separate by darks and lights and by heaviness of fabric), hanging up and taking down laundry from the outdoor clothesline, folding clothes and putting them away, vacuuming floors, cleaning windows, cleaning the kitchen including the oven, stove and fridge, cleaning the bathroom, dusting, taking out trash, etc.

I fell in love with the Organized Mum over the summer, but when the school year started (homeschool) it became impossible, because it took too much time. The timers weren’t anywhere near long enough to make a dent in the house. We have nine, going on ten, kids, three bathrooms, multiple kids rooms, and run at least three loads of laundry per day. This routine took me 2 1/2 to 3 hours per day. I loved its’ simplicity though. Currently, I’m doing FlyLady. It takes me 1 1/2 hours per day, plus little five minute bursts here and there throughout the day. It seems more sustainable, but I thought The Organized Mum was great in it’s own right. 💕 Thanks for the fun review!

Trying to keep a house together while homeschooling is a whole other level. The schoolwork we are doing requires one on one learning, not much independent work. As well, the process of uploading the work to our district adds to the time commitment for me. It really is like working full time all day and then still keeping the house together. I am giving this routine a try! It makes so much sense to my brain in ways clean mama and fly lady didn't, especially that dedicated day to the deep cleaning tasks! I would personally add on the dining room to the entry way/stairs, just because those areas wouldn't take long for me. I think that if you do a load of laundry a day, you will significantly cut down your folding time because there just aren't that many clothes per load. Also, I guess I never actually consider doing my dishes as part of my cleaning routine. It's just a non-negotiable part of mealtimes. I hand wash (I despise dishwashers- no matter how I sit things, stuff comes out dirty) after every meal, that way it's only a few dishes and doesn't feel overwhelming.

Best thing I ever did was switching to wash as I go when making meals. When you're washing one or two things at a time it's so fast and easy, and it doesn't stack up. Get one of those sponges with soap in the handle and wash the stuff you prepped on while food is cooking. Wash mixing bowls and spoons as soon as they're empty (bonus, easier to clean when stuff isn't dried on). Most nights I can wash the pots and pans after serving up plates and throwing leftovers in tupperware (which also helps with portion control). When dinner is done you just have the plates, forks, and maybe bowls left and it's waaaay more manageable to knock that out than a huge sink load of dishes from the whole day.

You inspired me to try the fly lady routine some time ago, since then I have updated my routine to accommodate our household. My husband mainly does the laundry - washing, hanging, ironing and folding (I do have to put the clean things away though), our floors are kept clean on daily basis by our robo-vaccum. My daily tasks are cleaning up the kitchen after meals (after each meal I will put the dirty dishes in the sink, wash the pots and pans, wipe the table and floors, because... toddler) and I have "15 minutes for the home" when I go through the house and put away any messes, wipe my sinks and toilets, maybe go over the entry carpet with vacuum or declutter a space. Then once a week I have the weekly blessing, that I modified - I allotte time for each space to clean and after the blessing I have a deep clean task (30-60 minutes)- I made a list of 26 tasks (washing curtains, cleaning the oven etc.) so I will do them twice a year. Maybe when I get back to office it will be different but currently it works for me.

Eee! I'm so excited! It was me who suggested you try this cleaning method and I loved this video. TOMM is totally customisable. You can add things to your list that are relevant to your home and needs or even leave out some of the suggested ideas if they don't work for you (e.g I don't vacuum every day in high traffic areas because we don't have pets and it's not necessary for us.) The laundry, as you do a load every day, does get faster because the more you do it, the smaller the piles should get. Tuesdays (bed change day) is my hardest laundry day because it takes so long to dry because I don't have a tumble dryer. Dishes are not mentioned because Gemma assumes that a job like that is a daily occurance that is simply part of being a grown up. It sucks but it has to be done! My house is definitely cleaner since following the method and I now have time within my 30 minutes to even tackle a deep clean of something in that days room. Tidying toys is also a job that is done every day and I don't include it in my 30 minutes because it'll be done even on say, kitchen day. More adulting 😫 haha

I love seeing you organize your drawers with something free and practical! They look great ❤️ And I agree that my daily tasks will take longer than 15 minutes with dishes, etc …. Ugh, such is life though. This system of approx 45 min, 5 days a week does seem like a great way to kick off the spring and continue with through the summer! Thank you!

Hey Nancy! It's nice to hear from you again. I'm always looking at empty boxes and thinking about how I can make the best use of them!! They may not be as pretty as store-bought containers but they get the job done. and yeah, it was a pretty easy routine 😊 besides the dishes not being mentioned 😆

@@ThatAwkwardMom To me I liked it because I don't like plastic and I'm really trying to cut it out of my home as much as possible. Weather it's from the food we buy or the storage options. Take it look a little pretty maybe get contact paper and it will be easier to wip it out when the odd crumbs end up in them. Always happens.

Hahaha listen... I would have gotten a dishwasher 3 years ago when I moved into this home but unfortunately the way my kitchen is set up, there's no easy way to put in a dishwasher 😥😥 it's my very sad reality lol

@@ThatAwkwardMom you just have to save enough to buy one and pay a repairman to install it. They always find a way, trust me. I live in a rental where we had to cut trough metal to install it. And we did. Thank God. It's really, like REALLY, a big difference - washing all day on hand or putting it inside to wash itself. You have to try to understand.

If the kitchen doesn’t accommodate you could do a portable or countertop dishwasher. We had a portable one in our old home and it was great! Also provided extra counter space with a butcher block on top.

Second the countertop dishwasher! Life changing. It fits perfectly between the counter and standard height cabinets. It’s only one drawer, but doing the dishes every day one is usually enough. It has one hose you put in a sink or bucket full of water, and one hose you put in an empty sink. In our very small kitchen it takes up the dead corner space and opens the basket right into the usable counter space, so it’s out of the way but easy to load.

I am so glad you reviewed this system! If there was a system that could steal me away from Flylady, it would be this one! But I like the holistic approach of Flylady because it's not just about cleaning. ❤️

Each load of laundry takes me about 15-20 minutes to fold. I do two to three loads a day because there are 6 of us. That’s an hour of folding, not to mention the task of searching for all the places my kids throw their dirty laundry. I have a daily task of 1. Make the beds (I don’t really bother with bunk beds - too hard) 2. Find all the laundry and start a load (cycling through as many as possible, folding, and putting it all away) 3. Do the dishes whenever possible through the day (usually a full dishwasher plus extra) 4. Take the trash out (from every trash can in the house) Doing those four tasks keep my house from smelling. Garbage smells, dirty laundry smells, dirty dishes smell. Made bed is a bonus point.

Sounds like a great time to get the kids more involved in laundry! Anyone able to undress on their own should be able to put their dirty clothes in a basket; for older kids, the rule can be that if it's not in their room's basket it doesn't get washed and if they wind up without enough clean clothes that's their consequence, and if they're younger (or either way) you can enforce a collect-your-laundry-for-the-basket sweep as part of the bedtime routine. And if they're sufficiently older, they can learn how to do laundry and take on some folding duties...

This is really inspiring. I work, and don't even have 45 minutes a day, but I think if I use this system to do the daily stuff every day and level 2 and 3 all on the same day on my day off, setting a timer for each room, that might really help me a lot. Thank you and thanks to the organized mum!! You are hilarious and awesome.. glad I found your channel, subscribed. :)

I started this method, and honestly, I adore it. I live in a 750 sq ft apartment, so I have a lot less to clean, but this helps me feel way less overwhelmed. But it also helps when everyone in your house is on board (looking at you, messy partners!)
