    I started running two months ago after about 4 years of doing nothing or even hurting myself, smoking cigarettes. I quit smoking and after two months I run 5k in 21:45 ( 4:21 ) instead of 30+ ( 6:18 ). I run with a low heart rate without much effort 21km + (my max atm are 24,5km) I'm 41 years old. Thank You Mark for all!

    Really enjoying your videos Mark! Having been over 21st at 52 yrs old and with 1 heart attack under my belt, I have discovered a new found love of running (run/walking) which I have combined with a healthier diet to get my weight down to just over 18st and my 5k time down from 45 mins to just under 39 minutes. Still some way to go but lots of satisfaction in not coming last at Parkrun and not getting out of breath tying my shoelaces in the morning!

    Good stuff - I'm doing Hyrox Manchester in Jan with my brother in the doubles, some great insight and tips in your video. I have a feeling that choosing your own split of who does how much of each section will probably get amended in the rules fairly soon. It could be easily enforced by doing the event at gunpoint.

    Great video, really interesting to see how you’re preparing. Maybe Hyrox could introduce some kind of Bonus Seconds system? For example one that rewards teams that split the tasks, to offset time losses from switching the gear over. Marshalls would have a clicker and you get 10 seconds off per switch or something. Or just have two sets of equipment (1x full weight and 1x half) and both team members do everything but you can choose who does which one if you need to rest and you can switch if one team member completes one of the two before the other.

    Mark I truly love watching your content every single week! Kuddos! 2 questions: How do you use your watch to track the different tasks? I do notice you use your lap function. Secondly I am wondering what brand your green shirt is? It's a nice T haha

  • @MarkLewisfitness

    @MarkLewisfitness

    2 жыл бұрын

    I just set the watch to a run but turn off the automatic lap timer. I then hit the lap button every single time I cross a transition. When I then go back over the times I can work out the time of every run, transition and exercise. Obviously, the GPS element of the watch is a bit pointless - even more so at the real event because it’s indoors. Really I’m just using it as a fancy stopwatch. And no idea on the T-shirt, Jenna buys them 😂😂

  • @FreerkDuursma

    Great video, and really interesting simulation to watch! Like you mention, a lot of the strenght obstacles are just suited to be done by the stronger person. It would be cool if in the future Hyrox finds a way to enforce atleast a certain percentage of shared participation. Nevertheless the Hyrox doubles is an interesting segment to an already interesting event! I found that Hyrox offers 3 divisions for duos: women, men and mixed. How much faster do you think a doubles men team could be compared to a single athlete’s time (assuming they have a similar fitness level)?

  • @MarkLewisfitness

    It feels like a good format might be that both male and female athletes have to BOTH complete each task with their respective weights carried over from singles with time only stopping once both have done so. That would be a much better measure of the pair and feel more like a true equal footing. Obviously reduces numbers / requires more equipment, but definitely a better option probably.

  • @ShadowJamchan
    @ShadowJamchan2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the insight into the mixed doubles. It's a little disappointing they don't/can't structure it a bit better so that it does encourage equal effort for both people vs some of the timed strategies you mention. Even just a fixed 4 activities each seems like it would be easy enough to police if certain exercises would exclusively for the women and others for men.

    I get if you are doing it for fun then you would want to spilt up the tasks to make them more achievable, why not a category where both members of the team have to do the task at the relevant weight and once both completed go off on the next 1km

  • @mompalomp
    @mompalomp2 жыл бұрын

    Surely the easier solution to the couples participation balance would be for hyrox to split the tasks down the middle for compulsory participation. Ie, Mark does all of the row, jen does all of the burpies etc. Essentially creating 'specialists' in respective events. Pretty simple to adjust marshalling to suit this I would have thought.

    Regarding the split between each person, why don't you split each task time 50% each? You'll be slower (I assume) but you have competed in the true spirit of mixed doubles. And bonus, you will get to spend 50% over your time shouting 'No Pain!'

  • @jeremychivers2593
    @jeremychivers25932 жыл бұрын

    Interesting issue regarding the spectator situation. Giving it some thought I would think Hyrox could stipulate that it’s a 50/50 split and then you have to decide which each will do, they could use the chips to place the partner in a partner zone to watch the other that way they would know which one was doing the given event etc.

    This is easily one your best videos Mark. Re the erg. Jen starts, pulls her max for 30-40 secs at 2.00, then switch and you pull 1.30-1.40 ish for the remainder. You'll be slightly less fatigued and you share the load. I'm with you, it should be a 50/50 split. Jen should have to do the sled pull, push with women's weights, you with men's weights. You pull up and down twice, she pulls up and down twice. Seems simple to me but maybe I'm just simple.😁

  • @Stevenc1984

    @Stevenc1984

    2 жыл бұрын

    It sounds odd, but running faster is the best way to improve your form. Depending how close you are to sub 20 you may want to try 1km repeats slightly faster than your 5km pace (if you're around 21:30 or faster). Over 21:30 you may want to increase your weekly millage, until you're a little closer. Good luck, keep working, you'll get there!

    Awesome vid! Well done to both. Quick Q: Is it better to be a little heavier or a little lighter for hyrox? I'm 6ft 80kg, but vary 78 to 83 roughly. Can't decide whether I should aim for more power or more lean. I'm doing men's singles in Bham in October!

    Good question! For me it’s always lighter because even light at 90kg I can smash the heavy stuff. For you I would go as heavy as you can get before your running gets slowed down.

    Hey @Mark Lewis - What muscle groups does the Ski thingy hit? Is it pretty much the same as rowing, or are other muscle groups used more? If I were to use a punch bag (left/right continuously) would that be similar?? I presume its quite heavy on the aerobic system, but not so much on the legs (even tho you use legs, they are not the limiting factor??)

    for the pull: not sure how many times you need to pull it back and forth, but if you time how long it takes you to walk/run to the opposite side, let's say 8 seconds, then Jen could pull the last bit (whatever distance she can pull in 8sec) while you go to the other side and get ready to pull it back

    I feel like in the doubles events each member should have to do half of the distance/reps (excluding the sled stations for mixed doubles) otherwise what's the point of it being a doubles race if only one of you is doing all the stations I love the hyrox concept but I think it needs a few tweaks to make it a bit more fair

    I am trying to persuade my good friend and PT client to do this with me in Manchester next year. She is very fit but, like me has never done anything like this. She is petrified and hasn't committed. She is 41 but I will be 62 at the time of the competition. At least we can't get divorced!!

    A somewhat out of context question : But what are your main "training" running shoes for pavement, and for trail? I'm a 210lbs runner myself, slowly working towards ultra marathon. I use Hoka Bondi 7 and various Fivefingers atm... Love your content btw :)

    A LOT of different zero drop Altras. Lone peak and superior for trail. Vanish, escalante, olympus for trail. Few others.

    Thinking and planning on attending a hyrox (probably London) next year. However the local gym lacks the ability to do things like a sled push, ski erg, wall balls. Would you have any recommendations for alternative exercises that might help develop some of the strength needed? I was thinking of the skill mill to try and simulate the sled push. But skierg and wall balls im kinda out of ideas.

    does Jenn need to be beside you on the sled pull or can she be at the other end to start pulling while you walk down recovering and then take over? id suggest practicing even more swaps on the ski erg and row and go even quicker - sprint and recover etc
