I like this idea, but I think that the 1930s lost so badly because you are using modern techniques designed for the modern kit, whereas back in the 1930s they would have different types of shooting and skills easier to do with their kit.

Don't know if any of you have ever kicked an old leather ball around, but those things are *HEAVY* Kieran isn't overselling it, especially in wet weather the ball gets about 2/3 times its original weight, I'm not a great footballer, but I normally can put my foot through a ball well, I genuinely struggled to get the leather ball further than about 35/40 yards regularly once the rain got heavy and it didn't exactly feel nice either

Imagine a movie where the main character is an underrated football player (not popular but has talent) from the present that travels back in time somehow and ends up in the 1930’s. He impresses everyone with his skills and tricks, while trying to get used to the equipment being so different. He helps a certain team win a very important tournament of some kind, and learns a life lesson on the way. What should be the title?

Except you'd be murdered on the pitch. Football in those days and even decades later was very rough, as hard tackles that would cause yellows today would often not even qualify as a foul and you probably needed to get shot to get a penalty. Fights on the pitch were also not rare, football was still close to rugby. It took a lot of effort to change this, as it was very damaging to players physical health.

@@xRyqn True, but the truly great players would be great in any era. Those old time great - with access to the training, diets, equipment, etc, of modern players would be great today. The great players of today, would be great 50-100+ years ago. That's why it's foolish to talk about the GOAT. Pele played in a completely different era and conditions than a Messi. Both GREAT players. They would adapt to changes.

Can’t help but wonder what part familiarity plays in this. You’re stepping back in time expecting it to suck, but if you were from 1930 and normally walked everywhere in more or less a full suit, the athletic wear of the day probably felt comparatively freeing. That’s not to say new wouldn’t still defeat old, but you’re probably not appreciating the old stuff for what it is, as much as you’re annoyed at it for what it isn’t. Has to SLIGHTLY corrupt the test a little bit surely. Of course we can’t, but what would be REALLY interesting would be to bring a great player from the 1930s to now and give them the modern kit and see how they took to it (No hate on the video though! To even be able to source all the old stuff is impressive to me lol! It’s just any kind of experiment like this is always gonna make me think of all the ‘what ifs’)

This video puts the “Miracle of Berne” game in perspective. Even though it was the early 50s, it illustrates exactly why the West German team was willing to experiment with spiked soles and be allegedly drugged. The Hungarians must have been made and forged out of iron to have the magical stamina and accuracy that they had. The game was also played in the rain, which really added to the game psychologically and physically.

In 0:47 what you call "pretty interesting looking things" I guess, we call in Brazil "Luva de Pedreiro", which now you might get confuse with that guy from Instagram, but is not. In portuguese we have two ways of saying the word "constuctor", construtor or pedreiro, and the constructors use this gloves (luva) to build anything they wanna build. Now, when it comes that guy from Instagram, in the beginning of his videos, he'd always use a constructor glove (don't ask me why), and that is why the name Luva de Pedreiro. So next time you come across to one of these you can call constructor gloves.

One other thing about the 1930's ball - if it was raining on the pitch, the wet ball would get heavier and heavier. Some players compared heading a soaked ball to heading a brick. I have heard of some English footballers who headed a lot winding up with dementia, sort of like what happens to American football players.

Not a real comparison until you head a soaking wet old leather ball on a freezing January like we did at school. Second thought forget that test it would be like Tyson Fury hitting Wilder. Nice entertaining video as normal.

Leather boots like that need a long break in period and should have bigger (thicker) socks worn in them. BIG difference in comfort and performance if you use them right. Plus you have to lace them up properly not floppy loose. Not to mention they would probably have been made custom for your foot by a professional cobbler so the fit would be something else. Maybe you could do a colab with a shoe making channel, now there is a cross over for the ages!

The boots and ball would be heavier as they used to cover them in dubbin to try keep the water out. The ball became very heavy in the rain. Plus the lace on the ball was dangerous if headed.

I remember reading an article by an old footballer who said the old leather ball had laces and you couldn't cross the ball with the laces parallel to the ground because when your teammate headed it the laces were liable to cut his forehead.

Hubert Birkenmeier owns a sporting goods store near where I live. He was a professional GK in Germany from 1970-1979, before signing with the New York Cosmos, spending the rest of his career in the US, before retiring in 1990. Been in his store many times buying equipment for my kids. As my daughter also played Goalie in high school, Birkenmeier would give her tips on playing goalie - even practicing inside the store. Key point here - Birkenmeier showed us the goalie gloves he used during his playing days. Perhaps because they were old and game used, they looked more like gardening gloves than Kieran's "1930's" gloves. Googling the history of Goalie gloves "The use of goalie gloves became more common in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but many goalkeepers still only wore them in wet conditions. Furthermore, the lack of specialized goalie glove manufacturers meant that some of the era’s best goalies were still playing in gardening gloves" As mentioned, Birkenmeier's gloves looked essentially like gardening gloves! Even English great, Gordon Banks, didn't start wearing gloves until the 1970 World Cup - meaning when England won the Cup in 1966 - Banks played barehanded. Stanno, Reusch, Uhlsport and Sondico were the early manufacturers of Goalie gloves, and those companies started making and marking goalie gloves during the 1970's. So Kieran, you should have tried to stop those shots barehanded!

@@billsager5634Minor note, Banks wore gloves in the 66 final. Though they are essentially common woollen gloves. 1970 saw the first real use of manufactured gloves as are common today.

@@1bert719 Interesting. Looking at footage of the 1966 World Cup, it appears Banks played some games bare handed, and some games with "gloves". As the footage is black & white, Banks wore dark colored gloves - which, as you stated, looked like common woolen gloves.

@@billsager5634 In colour photos they appear green, I believe he referenced wearing them in his autobiography (though I don't have it too hand. I'm sure he wore them due to the conditions and felt he'd gain an advantage.) They tended to go bare handed when it was wet for better grip and Bob Wilson would use chewing gum on his hands.

Some of the balls from the 2000's onwards are unplayable for goalkeeepers. Because I still used the mitts, I probably won't be as affected. If I tried it with a current futsal or indoor soccer, I'd have no chance against power strikers
