decal set IS vinegar, you can just buy regular white vinegar and dilute it a bit with water - if you have any decals that won't conform completely after this then dilute alcohol (such as isopropyl) again with a little water and use that carefully just on the decal itself, this will also soften the decal to get it to lay flatter against the model

I love that you are sharing your discoveries and your painting adventure with all of us. My honest opinion, seeing others paint up a squad that each unit has a slightly different painting process applied through experimentation, that while the overall scheme is similar, it is easy to pick out unique units within the squad. We all love paint schemes that tie everything together across an entire army, but the small subtleties between each model makes the whole thing feel more real.

mybe someone already wrote it here, space marine armor is not a simpel metal, it is ceremite, they didnt defined it 100%, but in the real world it is a layered armor composition with ceramic on top of composit layers. thats why it does not have a metalic shine. the painting on that material decides how it looks at the end

My last video I used tamiya panel liner. In all honesty o found the oil to be less “stainy” if we gonna make up words hahaha and I definitely should try a gloss but I’m sure I’ll have to do a matt before the colours cos they won’t go on as nicely over a gloss

Just a note, canonically the space marine armour is made of two materials, ceramite (a ceramic) and plasteel, an incredibly stronog plastic-like material. Hence, the armour is generally matte not metallic. Then you have the chapters who have metallic armour, I guess they paint it that way. Who the fuck knows, paint it how makes you happy.

  • @Groundeffected

    Жыл бұрын

I mean if we’re gonna be technical about it it’s not so much ceramic as it is a ceramic based material called ceramite which is a composite material. However it’s very clearly painted and in the paintings of the entire world of warhammers they look to be painted like cars with a candy or vibrant style paint job. Not a single illustration shows them with flat one toned desaturated colours. This makes me question why not use a metalic colour to illustrate the look from the artwork more accurately for beginners. It’s cool though I’ve figured out how I want them to look, and obviously anyone can do whatever they want with their little plastic toy soldiers.

So I use a very very similar method to batch paint more organic and textured models. Think Skeletons for D&D. The steps are: Prime Black Zenethal the entire model with white Black wash the entire model Drybrush white (With a similar volumetric lighting style to what you did in this video.) I find drybrushing works best for textured models as opposed to smooth space marine armour, however a combination of volumetric airbrushing and drybrushing could work very well for space marines. Go ham with contrast/speedpaints etc, through an airbrush or with a brush. Any combination of undershading/edge highlighting etc can be used if you want but isn't necessary. This gives you the ability to give great contrast between high and low points of the model with really really dark shadows, without tea staining (you do tea stain when you wash the whole model, but then cover it with drybrushing) and even effectively edge highlighting for you as your drybrushing catches all the raised edges much better than a airbrush can. This can also be applied to metallics, just zenethal and drybrush with your metallic rather than white.

Back in the 80's when I first started painting, there really wasn't any dedicated mini painting equipment beyond horrible enamel paints and limited acrylics. A lot of us used a similar technique by sketching on volumetric highlights with a brush (airbrushes were too expensive) over black and then painting over everything with inks and mixing in any extra highlights whilst the ink was still wet. Finally, black ink was mixed with a warm or cold colour and used for 'black lining'.

Love this! I'm normally not this stylized way of painting fan but this looks great. Would like to adapt this to Dark Angels. It seems so simple straight forward too with streamlined recipe, primer, volumetric lighting, oil wash, spray contrast and spray shade. Love it! What did you add to your Ink in the spray gun reservoir please? Thinner, water/solvent or flow improver?

I use generic Acryl paint + oil+ markers. The result is quite matte but adding the wash on top I am ok with the result look very pragmatical :))))

For the fists yellow id use imperial fist yellow for the light and iyanden yellow for shadows. And for the red angels I’m not sure what citadel paints but maybe a red ink for highlights and perhaps carraburg crimson for shadows. But o can’t say I’ve tested this. I will do a whole set of the origami chapters possibly in future dude.

So I use synthetics pretty much exclusively only because I so far haven’t been able to afford sables yet. And for this I’m pretty sure I’m just using a 00 Windsor and Newton cotman series brush. I used a size 4 for most other things

Very good Video. I will try to use this trick next time. Instead of blue ink, Vallejo Dark Blue will also works. This is a very transparent blue! Here are two tricks from my side: 1. Use Martian Ironearth (the cracking one) without shade! Paint the base in a dark brown (I use Contrast Cygor Brown or Wyldwood). looks much better than Ironcrust. On big bases (>40mm) make some spots with Ironearth and somd with ironcrust. Looks amazing! 2. Use pigmets for dust. Vallejo Pigment Rust is a very good tone for Martian Ironearth/Crust.

You know I know this info but just looking at the imagery that looks a in the codex and the pictures of these dudes in the paintings they look like shiny guys. And of course my human brain can only see metal as the only protection… also I like to say dumb stuff all the time so take what I say with a pinch of salt. I’m just here to show my own experiences and help with others who are in this hobby of painting miniatures and large scale statues.
