I tested The Band2 violin pick-up | REVIEW

Музыка

In this video I'm demonstrating and reviewing a violin pick-up: The Band2, a pick-up which wraps around your violin.A big thank you to Headway for sending me this pick-up and trusting me with making a review video about it! Although they are the sponsors of this video, my opinions are honest and my own.

I had to buy, I was desperately looking for a pick up and this seems great! Thanks for this

I have one and generally like it. Of course, any amplified acoustic violin will feedback if you try to match the volume of the electric guitar/drum-driven band you're working with. After many years of experimenting with different pickups, I'm sad to say this is still a problem. While I do own a solid-body electric that never feeds back, I much prefer the more natural sound of my old acoustic made louder (to a point!) The Band2 is the best pickup I've tried.

The most common alternatives are 1) sticking a hard piezo into the gap on one side of the bridge, which alters it's structure and must have some impact on the instrument and sound, but on amplified sound they pick up the strings on one side more than the other and almost nothing from the body, so tonally uneven also. But the sound is harsh and peaky from a glass like material. Think resonant (main) frequency of glass is mainly crash and tinkle when you hit or break it; 2) replacing bridge with pickup built in, usually very close to strings to higher output levels from tiny piezo. and nearer some strings than others, so uneven tonally, hardly buffered by wood and unaffected by the body, so harsh again and may distort. Some replacement bridge pickups are heavy and thick and this will change instrument sound acoustically a great deal also; 3) Microphones feed back very readily so no use at any volume levels.

Cool! It sounds pretty good. I like the fact that one doesn’t have to alter the instrument. Thanks!🌞✌️😎🎻

I love the sound the of this! I tried to rig up something with a cheap pickup that works but definitely not as well. I love the balanced sound and where it is placed since it seems like it wouldn’t get in the way

I really Like the headway Band - would be interesting to see the difference between 1 and 2. The "Rubber Band" is sturdy enough that it won't pull itself back while adjusting. It works best with Higher quality violins (i mean ones with thinner Wood Corpus); If you try it on e.g. 100-300€ violins you will not gain a good Sound, because in General the Wood-Body is too thick

I would like to hear a comparison video of the Band and the Band2. I'm happy with the sound the Band makes, which I use with a Fishman platinum pro EQ/DI analogue preamp. The problem I have had with the Band is the design - after a few years of much use the velcro comes off and it is difficult to secure snugly around the instrument

0:40 Nice gallery wall display! I'm currently making three violin wall mounting brackets for a friend who teaches to school kids, so it's interesting to see other designs. I like how you've got the string and hook holding the violin flush up against the wall.

Thanks! I simply put nails in the wall at a slight upwards angle, and the string is a piece of black shoe lace (double-knotted) that goes under the upper two turning pegs and simply hung onto the nail.

I've been using this in a loud band for many years. I also use a fishman preamp into a fender blues junior and have no problem with feedback.

Thanks for the heads up! I am certainly going to check them out. Btw, I finally changed the Prelude strings on the violin to Tonicas. It’s been about 5 days and they are just about settled in and sounding ok. I’m thinking that if they are going to sound as they they do now in another week or so that I might want to experiment with the G and E strings. The set is balanced and sounds decent and easy to play up into the higher positions now, but may end up just needing a little something extra on the ends of the spectrum. And I think I just decided to try Alphayues on the viola. Uh oh...🥳. 🤒

Nice to hear! And yes, Tonica strings are very nicely balanced. The set also works well with a Pirastro Gold E.

@@MarijkeViolin Yes, I remember about the Gold E. May end up searching for ideas on which G will pair with it, but playing the set in right now to see how it goes. Probably switching out the E string first. 🥳

Sadly this pickup tends to cause my violin to have a distorted sound, have to keep adjusting it so it doesnt do that but sadly it is an occurring problem. I have to use it for the gigs with my indie folk rock band
