I test ride a Suzuki Burgman 650 (15 May '20)

5/15/20, Winchester, VA
Who test rides a Suzuki scooter at a Harley dealership? I do. Since reading about them and seeing them at shows I have always wanted to test ride a Burgman, a maxi-scooter capable of sustained freeway speeds and able to do 0 to 60 in about 7 seconds. I'm 6' 4" and 300 pounds and was comfortable on this scooter.
I think it represents not only good basic transportation, but you can also do some touring on this as well. I think book on this one would be about $10K; the dealership only wants $7K!
If I lived in Paris I would totally own one of these. In Paris you can park these on the sidewalks just about anywhere - something we badly need to do in our own American cities.
BTW: I say Route 7; I was really on Route 50. For some reason I had Route 7 on the brain that day.

Owned one for over 3 years. Daily commute is around 140km (87 miles). Serviced regularly, absolutely reliable, easy to "drive" and far, FAR more fun than being behind a wheel. A very capable (and surprisingly economical) machine too!

I'm on my 3rd Burgman and it's definitely not a bike in scooter's clothing. Because the engine is between the feet, the center of mass is super low which makes it a dream to handle.

Ok, I couldn't watch anymore of this after "99.(whatever) mph top speed" came up on the screen. I owned a '03 Burgman 650 with a Remus racing exhaust, Teka tuned on a dyno at just a bit more than 39hp at the wheel. The top speed was 119mph. Not in theory. Radar verified. It was "mildly tuned", at best. Stock, it was only slightly slower at 114mph and STILL faster than I rode, EVER, apart from those top speed tests. So, yes, there are much faster motorcycles and this is, by a VERY wide margin, the best motorcycle I've owned or ridden, in 45 years of riding. Everything a motorcycle needs to be, the Burgman is. For those who'd say something akin to, "BS" or "you've never ridden a ---------", all I can say is, so? The two things that matter, as well as, add legitimacy, for me (And that's what matters), to my claim are, A; I don't need anyone to agree and B; I was born with my own penis. I'll buy another Burgman. Ride what you like. Just know this; if choosing your motorcycle had ANYTHING to do with what the opposite (or same) sex might think of you, you're a dipshit. My wife married me for other reasons.

I got the 2005 Burgman 650 in Canada after I had an accident. I'm absolut happy with it. Drove from Edmonton AB down to Vegas NV and a lot of people where looking at me. Some very interested and some kinda discussed - until they jumped on it do go around the hotel lot. "as you said in the video - most of them were very impressed." And I only paid $2,200 CAD not USD at a dealership 3 years ago! Right now she has 40,000 km because every time it gets warm I jump on it. Maximum speed is actually 185Kph!!

I have a 2018 model of the Burgman exc. and it is a dream to ride on. When I am riding with my wife I only use the automatic but when I ride alone I use the handflippers just for fun. It is heavy but stable as a rock and rather cheap with gas. A lot of storage and a lot of luxury. Heated handgrips and front seat or both! I had all kinds of motorcycles and motorscooters but the Burgman is the finest! Too bad you did not learn the bike before you took off than you would have found the Burgam the more impressive!!

I've been meaning to get a maxi scooter for some time now. I had a 400 Burgman some years ago and found it comfortable but underpowered. Also the engine being part of the suspension didn't really help the handling. It's gonna be a toss up between the Honda Silverwing 600 or the 650 Burgman. Both have twin cylinders and a fixed engine in the frame. Differences are the Honda is better quality with a more straightforward belt transmission but poorer legroom (I'm 6'3" ). The Suzuki can suffer from rust underneath all that plastic and the more complex stepped transmission can be expensive to fix if it goes wrong. There's apparently a plunger bolt underneath the casing that if it wears or is damaged can cause untold trouble. On the plus side the Burgman is a lot bigger and faster. So it looks like I'm just going to take a couple of test rides.

In between my Yamaha and current Honda I bought a used 500cc Aprillia Atlantic Sport. Similar in a lot of ways to the Burgman (but nowhere near as refined). I found maxi scooters to be *truly excellent transport* , not much fun mind you, but excellent nonetheless. Here in London there are millions (literally) of the small 125cc scooters everywhere you look, but they should not be confused with maxi scooters. I was able to cruise at 70 on the motorway and taking a pillion was effortless. I _really_ wanted a Burgman but never found one at a competitive price for my budget. There is - undeniably - a stigma attached to scooters, at least here in the UK that freezes you out of the the 'Biker fraternity' ... Scooters are seen as the 'Vermin' of 2 wheeled transport... probably because they are literally _everywhere_ on the roads and driven by inexperienced youths, gangsters and delivery people. Also, in the UK it is exceedingly difficult to get your motorcycle license, it's costs around £1000.00 all in and is difficult to pass. Scooters up to 125cc can be ridden by anyone over 16 with a half days 'training' in a car park and a brief stint on the road.. you can't fail it.. Bikers rightly covet their status as _trained, qualified and safe_ riders and therefore view scooters (rightly or wrongly) with disdain. I personally *love* the Burgy.. but the stigma puts me off.

There is much more you could have said about the bike like manual/automatic selection, heated grips and seats. Speedo over reads 9 to 10% through the range. I've had two 650 execs and while it might show 115 on the dial this might only be truly possible by totally thrashing the motor and transmission to the point of disintegration. The bike will not make 138!! Impossible. My current exec was new in 2016 and I wouldn't exchange it for any other machine. Perfect on motorways (UK!)and city /rural riding.
