Hi Steve, I lost my husband in January from leukaemia and we done this for a gift for my daughter. I painted it black and rubbed gold over it , it brings all the details. Every time I go up my daughter house I touch it and it does feel like I’m touching his hand, strange really. We love it so much💙

@@SteveMcDonaldCraftingit is a great idea and saves me saying the same thing. I was going to say paint it on and gently wipe it back of with a damp cloth. Also you can keep your rings on. And also put an old watch on that you don't mind going in the alginate seaweed rubber as it will show up in the cast and look great. You can also cast your hand holding a tennis ball.

Just got a kit for a Christmas gift and was checking out videos. Love the idea of spray painting gold. I may do silver or bronze! Will really stand out in my China cabinet. Hubby and I hold hands going to sleep at night, so this will be special when there is one of us.

Oh yes, I like that! That's a gift any mum would be super proud of, I know I would be! Thanks for doing one of these Steve, I really wanted to get a kit for myself and hubby but wasn't sure which one would be best. You have solved that dilemma for me. You son has a lovely voice, and sounds like a lovely young man. God bless you and your friends and family Steve, now and always.

vibrating the alginate and plaster while curing will get rid of bubbles. I dont know if this works for resins but im sure it wouldnt hurt. Im gonna try it on my next resin project

When I made one of those for my daughter's hands and feet when she was little, I poured silicone down in the alginate mold and got a silicone casting of her little hands and feet… I made a set of hollow resin hands and feet for my mum and mother in law… I still have the Lee abet mold of her hands and feet around here somewhere lololol… Your casting turned out AWESOME!!!!!!!

Hey you! I snuck on over here for once! Alginate - I used to use this when I was dental nursing to take moulds of patients teeth to send to the lab! Tricky to get right consistency and mixed throughly in the short working time, but you did well! Love the way it turned out and how you finished the wooden base! Do let us know your mums reaction ❤ See you over in the group 😊

oh wow Steve, that sounds really interesting. I used Alginate all the time when I used to do facial treatments for problematic skins, as its an excellent conductor of electrical current ( sounds horrific lol, but it was a very relaxing, great outcome treatment ) x

There's a another resin artist I watch. He uses alginate a lot for molds. His mixture is always quite a bit lumpy, but the molds come out well, so maybe it's okay if it's lumpy. I don't know anything about alginate so don't trust me lol.

1st of all, mix the material properly, then vibrate and/or pull a vacuum. You did a poor job.
