I-Team: Gwinnett ME criticized for ignoring grieving families who need death certificates

By Randy Travis

LOGANVILLE, Ga - Anyone who’s had a loved one pass away understands the importance of a death certificate.
It’s a legal document needed to settle that person’s affairs, to claim life insurance benefits or cancel a cell phone plan. It’s even required before a body can be cremated.

Why don’t they just change medical examiners? It sounds like she just doesn’t want to do her job. She wants everyone to do it for her and that one she has to do herself. She’s lazy.

Thats the issue...flat fee so there is no incentive for them. Put in the contract that if they dont respond after 5 days they can be fined . Bet thst speeds up the death certificate

Just fire her. No taxpayer is going to be upset about medical examiners actually doing their job. If they don't have options work with another city or county like other small towns do. I'm glad that this is getting attention on the news.

Preventing people from claiming insurance not to mention the investigations that it holds up. If they do this for natural death you can imagine how long they take their time sitting on criminal investigations

The ME needs to be fired for dereliction of duty. The families need to sue the ME personally.

Sounds like the medical examiner needs to be fired for negligence of duties. There needs to be an audit, sounds like embezzlement somewhere by the doctor.

So where was the body for those 71 days? Was it at the county morgue or a commercial mortuary? Who paid for the storage of the deceased? Is this just a scam by the Gwinnett medical examiner to be paid under the table by mortuaries having to store the body?

We had the same problem when my mother died in South Florida until an angel in a police uniform intervened. This was the doctor who diagnosed her with late-stage cancer. Personally, I think it had to do with us declining to transfer my mother to a treatment center in which he had a financial interest and us firing the home care agency that he owned.

👨‍⚕️ ~ It literally makes no sense for a random doctor to sign a death certificate. Why not just have a family member sign it then instead? That would make just as much sense. The medical examiner is to do at least a cursory investigation to confirm nothing suspicious has happened. Even if they don’t want to do an investigation, sign the damn death certificate. Like I said, having some random doctor sign it literally defeats the reason we have a medical examiner and that we have the death certificate process. All that will do is start an industry where you have the one doctor in town who charges you $500 just to sign a document, because you have to have someone sign it so he has a monopoly. And he signing it with absolutely zero knowledge.

No trauma and no injuries. Did they take all her clothes off and look at every inch of her body to ascertain that nothing looked out of place? I guess if you want to commit murder in that town just make it look like natural causes. I'd be looking for a lawyer to look at the contract that was signed for Dr. Terry and her business because it seems to me she's violating her duties. At the least these people should be transported to the morgue to be viewed immediately. If they don't have a family doctor willing to sign a certificate because they haven't been under care then you don't know it's really natural causes.

Fairfax County In Virginia took 12 weeks to issue the death certificate for my son. Country Life would not pay until death certificate was issued. The two funeral directors demanded cash up front. So we had to take money out of our retirement to pay funeral expenses. Fairfax County usually would not answer the phone and when they did they were unsympathetic and rude. Country Companies did answer the phone but they could care less.

When my mom died June 2017 at home, in NYC in her sleep we still had to wait 30 days for the Bureau of Records to kick the death certificate out...for her modest insurance policy to be paid to us. As I recall, she was cremated within a fairly short time. The Coroner came to our house to visit as required by law. This in the event there is 'anything unusual" (translation - a homicide)... The FDNY and police officers were extremely compassionate and kind. Once they ascertained she was obviously a well cared for 95 year old woman, who passed naturally in her sleep...an officer sat with her body, kept me company. And then signed off on her remains. At which point the funeral home took care of the paperwork and made sure things were per the 'necro-protocol'. Uncle Jimmy said at the time, "You think LIVING in New York's a pain in the ass? Try DYING in New York.." Mom's last employer kept hassling us for more 'proof', and I still recall with a cringe, their rule bound , appalling stupidity..It boggles the mind, swear to God. My sympathies to all who struggle with bureaucratic nonsense, that paper pushers seem to activate at the worst possible moments - just when a grieving family ALREADY has to has deal with confusion and heartbreak. Ugh..

71 days is unconscionable. She should be fired, period. Since she holds a contract, this is ample basis to terminate it for cause. It’s the best government contract T4C I’ve seen in some time as a matter of fact

this is deplorable. our taxes pay for an examiner but she doesn't want to do her job and puts people thru even more grief after losing a loved one? that's insidious and bereft of humanity. and what if a death *looks* natural but it's a disguised murder? deciding if it's a natural death vs something else can't be done over a phone call. gross negligence

Pretty hypocritical of her to criticize doctors for not signing death certificate when it is literally her job to sign off on death certificates and she just “declines”, and still gets paid for it. She should reimburse that man his $9000 and do the only part of her job she’s qualified for, quitting.

It’s a problem. Yet there are 2 sides to every story. Had a case recently suspicious for murder and the local coroner signed it out as suicide with no autopsy, no police/DA, and they allowed a quick cremation allowing someone possibly to get away with murder. Shouldn’t the coroner give the most serious attention to the deceased?
