I switched from Blackmagic to Sony (But I still love Blackmagic)

Фильм және анимация

I have loved Blackmagic for a long time, and I still do....but something drew me to the fx30. If you are thinking of switching to Sony from Blackmagic, especially the pocket 4k, this is the video for you. Hopefully this can help weight the pros and cons of each system, and help you make a decision on which camera system is for you!

I shot all last year on fx3/6/30 for my work. An underrated feature with the cfexpress type a cards is how fast they offload. Transfer times were typically our biggest bottleneck in the workflow with the volume of content we were pumping out. Absolutely loved the Sony system for the versatility, but also had a pocket 6k for in studio stuff that required a little more quality.

I debated Blackmagic or Sony for a run-and-gun rig for many months. In the end, after intensive research, I picked up an A7Siii. Big considerations for me were size factor and the EVF. I knew buying lens and gear in the Sony pipeline would set me up well for an FX6 if I ever needed to upgrade. SLog3 is so excellent you won't miss RAW. The low-light sensor is a cheat code-it essentially saves you buying a fill-light, and night shoots are a dream!

Best of both worlds! I have a Sony FX30 and a Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro, both are such great cameras and wonderful for run & gun shoots as well as studio/more controlled ones too. I'm thinking about possibly getting a Pocket 4K and/or a Panasonic Lumix GH6 for an MFT camera, but I might just wait and save up for a more expensive cine camera that can take more punishment from everyday shoots and get higher tier clients with it.

Yup....thats been are current workflow. We are currently working on a small docu-series and using the BMPCC AND the Sony FX30...using their strengths for the production.

Ironically, external SSD is something that I really can't get onboard with. 1) One more thing that can go wrong since it's a usbc cable. 2) Clients forget, lose stuff, and make up stories. I like to keep a copy until I verify everything is ok. 3) Sony files are much smaller, it does not take long to backup de ssd and review the footage between takes

This is totally fair. Since filming this video, I have moved over to pro res on atomos ninja plus the SSD recording for backup. We have a few different people that work on different projects as well as a few different computers and also different aspects of production from video editing to visual effects. So in terms of codecs, moving everything over to ProRes versus Sony's codes has honestly made our lives a lot easier in post.

Nice! Still a solid camera. Why not one of the 6k versions?

@@ChompStudioI did the same. 4k 12 bit raw to sd cards is nuts. I bought it for vintage lenses only, with .64 speed booster. Gyro stability works way better at 120-90 degrees btw We shot today - definitely miss autofocus, that’s about it We actually like super 35 as much or if not more than full frame. Extreme shallow depth and extreme low light isn’t really needed in our line. Using longer lenses helps with blurred background and IMO looks better

Actually, I like the 30 more than the 3. Down sampled 6k looks really nice

I debated long and hard between the 6k g2 vs the fx30. I ended up settling with the fx30 as well but I’m still determined to eventually get a Blackman cinema camera down the line.

With similar sensor sizes, I feel like the image quality is pretty similar. Like with ALL cameras Ive seen amazing footage and horrible footage with both cameras. Besides comparing these features, workflow, auto focus etc....after you decide which of those technical features are the best for you, I feel like with both cameras the image quality and character will ALWAYS come from the lenses. Hope that helps.
