This was an all time fave stream. XQC is a great guy and the explosion of emotes in chat was quite memorable. Also gotta plug the limited time merch. If the chessbrahs have taught us all one thing, it's if you're gonna sellout - go big or go home. Limited run Hikaru Bongcloud Speedrun Merch - available here for about 10 more days: merch.streamelements.com/gmhikaru . Thanks so much for all the support, subscriptions and follows.

Reasonably good intro for how to play chess. I usually watch Hikaru's videos as tactics trainers. As he and opponent are making moves, ask "why did they do that". Starting from absolute basics (don't blunder your pieces) is a good idea. He also mentions major classes of tactics (pins and forks). There are a lot of good chess videos on youtube and this ranks as a decent chess lesson 1.

Masua90 there’s obviously other motivation, publicity being the main one. He’s going to reach some of XQCs viewers out of this. Hikaru has said in the past that twitch is a way to spread chess to more people. I’m just complimenting him on not being a dick about it. It would be incredibly easy for him to be condescending or think that this is just a waste of his time because he’s one of the top chess players in the world. He’s genuinely trying to help XQC out and it serves as a stepping stone for his viewers to start learning chess.

Erik Näslund Exactly! I’m 23 got into chess about a year ago because Agadmators video on game 3 of the 1972 WCC got recommended to me and for some random reason I clicked on it. I hadn’t played a game of chess since I was 8 years old (my dad and grandfather used to play on scouting trips). I was immediately hooked and through watching Hikaru, Antonio, Aman & Eric, Yasser, and Ben Finegold I’ve learned a lot. I went from only knowing how the pieces moved to 1820 on chess.com in the year since. It’s great KZread and Twitch are around to support all of those guys sharing the game that they’ve devoted their lives to.

I've been an avid reader most of my life so I'm used to taking in and processing a lot of different information and chess has just become another thing that I like to study. On average I've been playing about an hour or two a day and analyzing games about the same amount of time. anywhere after 14:30 in the late game, after the intended first black rook bad play that leads to losing your first rook, would it be a good move at any point in time right after whites next play and further if he plays his bishop at e4 next to the pawn. even though it is targeted by your knight at f6, if you take the bishop, he plays rook you lose your knight and now you both have just 1 rook. even if you do decide to take the bishop, would you just plan to threaten the bishop or rather plan ahead by ensuring that play by putting the rook at a4 targeting the position of e4. is it not good to make such specific plays in such a simple state or at all? especially since it may too obvious and too slow. it seems he is in a certain situation that he cant move with-in or else he loses the pin on the king, and you can force him to move out of position when doing this play. would it be bad to even make him move since he might possibly have less options especially when focusing specifically on this position or play of the king? he is more vulnerable when not focusing on versatility of course so it seems like its easier for you to attack because your rook is free but both of his piece are locked. your using 1 knight with your king and pawns in play while hes using 2 pieces, no king in play or pawns so he cant defend or trade. if he loses the pin though he can be free but he just doesnt have your knight and king locked down, then he can just try again later. it seems that you would rather lose the pin because you have other chances while not losing the pin thats not working well means practically risking or rather losing the game. since you went a8 after he took your rook with his bishop, and then say he goes a4, first would you move the rook to put that position in check or second would you not do that move at all. if you do, and he moves back to d3, would that be a good play to try to deal with the rook and then plan to push the pawn at f4 foward, so it takes f5 like the bishop previous with the same actions but a much less expensive piece to put at risk. so its essentially being a free or fake bishop that could take the hit but fills the purpose as the rook still pins the pawn or king and now he can freely move the bishop. hes basically made 2 bishops with one he can keep in place while the other can freely move to other positions, possibly even allow his rook to be free instead and make a pin with the freed bishop. is this again too specific? ive may have lost some of my thought process while watching that part of the video and starting this comment as now ive taken quite some time to just type out the current ideas well. including of course the obvious is that i dont know if it cant be really thought out because you were giving plays on purpose for the purpose of learning, but it could be pretended as a scenario at that point in time of him taking the rook. for the next game i had another question that seemed more simple because despite what lead to the scenario in game 2, there was an accepted state of the game that a new learning process could be made from. even though what lead to the board may not have been great and could have given a better board, it seemed just being given that scenario you accepted that it could actually be played at high level. therefore at 28:00 you decided to challenge his bishop after taking his pawn with yours and he responded with his bishop taking your pawn, he then decided to aggressively take the knight at f3. now previous it was noted that its obviously not a good play as you are just sacrificing a bishop into pawns especially just for a knight and not really making a play that puts you in a position to plan for advantage and possibly try to win later. now im sorry to say that i kind of forget my thought process due to focusing on the end of the first game, so instead i will simplify it to had he not made that play, should he castle then despite the bishop challenging just being thrown in for a possible learning experience, or should he decide to play the bishop even more defensively, or is it just a bait despite the learning experience and he should just move other pieces or plan for a better strategy. should he also have just castled at 27:40 when you decided to take his pawn, or was it a trick and it was correct to just attack with the bishop because had he castled you would punish him and take both his pawn and a bishop for your pawn and still not have it dealt with. even though he played his bishop in response and then you decided to challenge his bishop, there is less of a chance you take his bishop and lose yours at d5 to his knight instead of getting a practically free bishop with your pawn and even already fulfill its value by taking a pawn previous. then at this point he can neglect the move and safely castle without a threat to punish him. sorry if this was difficult to read and think about, and thank you in advance if you happen to read and respond.

It's funny, on very same day that you were doing this stream (which I wasn't aware of until now) I was teaching a friend who was a near-beginner over Facebook Messenger. Though I'm only about 1800 USCF, we covered much of the same stuff: Watch out for loose pieces, get your king to safety, study basic tactical motifs. Now that I've seen the stream, I see how you simplified things well. Next week, when I give my friend his second lesson, I'll have your "endorsement"...
