I successfully trap the hen, taming wild chickens. Primitive Skills (ep183)

Hi! I'm Huy Duong
In the morning I harvest Boehmeria nivea in the garden and grilled corn.
Then I knit a chicken cage to hold the chicks and then went into the woods to trap the hen. I successfully trapped the hens, they are reunited. I returned home when it was already dark.
I hope I can successfully tame the wild chickens.
Have fun watching the video!

Hi everybody! In the previous video there were a lot of comments recommending me to roof the house with clay bricks. Currently I have collected almost all wooden planks. What should I do? Should I roof my house with wooden planks anymore?

For the chickens: you want to give them a good run area that's well protected, something like a 6ft x 6ft area. Since you don't have access to netting, you could weave a bamboo cover for the top, it just needs to be tight enough to stop predators from getting in and them getting out. Then you need a well covered chicken coop with a closable door to house them at night / bad weather. If you put down cut grasses, etc. on the bottom of the chicken coop it'll make it easier to clean it out and you can add the old grass and chicken poop to a composting bin.

@@szeddezs actually he could build a raised chicken coop and just use two logs as skids so it could be moved and then the fencing could either be done in sections or just have a few posts that actually go into the ground. That would make it easier to move.

@@cursedxistence that's the best idea, since he's got rats as a predator the raised coop is best, I've got about 30 birds, ducks & chickens, I have to deal with North American predators, but rats/mice will be attracted to chicks, not so much pullets and full grown birds. Also avoiding excess grain/feed on the ground will help. Don't let the chickens in your garden, they will eat your food or dig up plants. Get ducks for gardens.

Yes...spend time with them. We had about 60 layers and managed to get our hands on an old, non road worthy semi trailer. We cut a hole in the side, and converted it to a chicken coop. (Eventually put rabbits in there too!). Built a ramp to go up to the hole (which we covered with a doggie door) and eventually the chickens figured out that when it was dusk...it was time to go in. They'd go marching up that ramp one-by-one every single night. No wrangling required. There was a bit of ruckus if we didn't get out there and open that doggie door first thing in the morning, however! :)

So happy for the mother hen and chicks to be reunited! Domesticating the mother will take more time because she was wild, the chicks already look more used to you. It will be easier with them. Build them a safe fenced in area (with a top to be safe from predators) with a nice hen house for nesting and getting out of the weather. Food is your friend when taming. Like banging the gong for feeding the fish, make a sound to call to the chickens when you feed them, so they become familiar with you. In the very near future, you would be excited to have needles and thread, hammer and nails, even a measuring tape or handsaw , shovel or knife. 30 years ago I was teaching my students gardening and eating wild, edible plants, making maple syrup, camping and snowshoeing, wintercamping. Unless you learned that from natural-living parents, you might consider preparing yourself to live free of ATMs, cellphones, video games and TV because the technology we are so dependent on will all have to be re-invented as well as the rest of our civilization. What is already unfolding is a recurring micronova of our sun, that's why it's so white at noon. Only happens every 12,000 years. Last time that happened was about 12,000 years ago. I hope our amazing teacher of primitive skills can safely leave the jungles of Southeast Asia because the that will be the new Arctic Circle. Even herds of elephants are migrating to safety of higher ground to avoid the massive floods, and the new Ice Age, and much more. The Apocalypse is for real but most of those who are prepared could survive. It was a surprise for me, too. I wrote Quantum Dreaming--A Train Is on the Track to help get people ready for what is already starting to show up. The elephants seem to know what's coming.

I knew you could do it! Good job on catching the mother. I really loved how you showed the process on how to make rope from hemp and the skill you showed in separating the bamboo into smaller and smaller strands was really masterful and cool to watch. As for the cage for the Hen and chicks, my advice would be to create a woven enclosure that's big enough for you to stand and walk around in so it can be easily cleaned and have a second but smaller "building" (hen house) only needs to be 4x4 feet wide and 4-5 feet tall as you'll want to be able to get into it to clean it. This creates a safe area for the hen and chicks to be safe at night and a place for you to feed if you don't want to monitor them during the taming process, as you may be busy .

Mother hen can have a place to lay eggs as well as the future grown hens from chicks. Of course a feeding and water trough will be needed. Hens will start to lay eggs in about 20 weeks. Good luck with your chickens. They are rewarding with eggs and meat. Be blessed with good health and peace. 😊🇺🇸

I have found that chickens thrive best either loose or in a movable enclosure. I don’t think letting them run loose is ideal in your situation so I would recommend a small coop you can move by hand that gives them a place to roost that is up off the ground and covered to give them shelter from rain. This would be paired with some type of fence to keep predators out and keep the chickens in the spot you want them. The cage you were keeping the chicks in would be sufficient with a few modifications. Put a floor in it so it forms a complete basket and maybe poke some sticks through about 3-4” from the bottom for them to roost on. As for your fence you could weave rectangular bamboo panels that you tie together with string each time you move them and if it is high enough, 3-4 feet or so, you don’t have to cover the whole thing but if you have lots of hawks or owls then I might do it anyway. After you have the requisite materials for your pen you set it up wherever you want them and move them every few days. The more often you move them the smaller the enclosure can be. And as for locations might I recommend non productive areas of your garden so they can eat the pests and fertilize the soil a bit.

For me, I have found calmly, quietly talking to animals helps domesticate them. Make them feel safe around you, no sudden or loud movements. Chickens will come home to roost in the same place every night. Once they are used to you, and found a safe place with food and water. They will stick around close. If you have predators you may want to make a secured roost for night time. During the day you will have them all over your place, around you easy to protect. Personally I would not cage them during the day after they are used to you. Good lick, I hope you have good success.

Building a simple chicken coop is easy. How ever many hens you have, build x2 as many nesting boxes, if you’re going for eggs. For meat birds, give them room to roam and eat and feed them PLENTY. Free roaming chickens will help keep the insects and rodents under control, too. They’ll roost at night, so a perch above ground, even just a few cm will work. Shade is important, as is a dry coop to keep disease under control. Might help to have a bamboo mat underneath the coop to clean it out easily and harvest the manure for fertilizing your crops.

It's a little late. If anyone else wants to catch a chicken follow it to it's roost area at dark. Catch it at night. Aim for the feet not the wings. Just a farmers tip.

You are extremely resourceful and clever, Bravo! Someone typed that you should talk to them so that they get used to you. I agree. By the way, I still think that your roof ought to be made with ceramic tiles. The wooden planks that you have can be used to make a chicken coop to protect them from other wild predators like fox or boars. With the extra hemp rope, make another pair of sandals to protect your feet. Your floating rice paddy is successfully growing! Great job and keep it up. I look forward to your next video. Be safe and take care. 🤗

I really look forward to your videos and what amazing thing you will create or do. You never disappoint. I do have a question...of all the creations you have developed through you talents and patience I don't understand why you haven't created a cooking stove instead of cooking on an open fire. Keep up the great works that you do and be sure take care of yourself, you work awfully hard and don't ever rest that I can tell. Thank you again for sharing your extraordinary creations and talent through you hard work. And I want to mention Thank you for the subtitles...as an international fan I really appreciate it. I'm from California USA. Bless You!!

Amazing project with the chicken and the hen! You need a more extensive area so they don't get stressed. You can wait for them to grow up to see which would be male and which females, if not, it's time to look for a rooster. I would like to see the same but with boars! But it would be necessary to prepare a wide area, knowing that they like to dig the earth.

Chickens are a tough one to tame. It usually takes a couple generations. I eventually got mine to come to me when I got home. They knew my car. Feed them at the same times every day. The quickest way to tame your chicks is to get them to associate you and your hands with food.
