I Stayed On The World's Most Haunted Ship (Queen Mary)

Ойын-сауық

A few years ago I spent a night onboard the RMS Queen Mary, I've learnt a lot about the ship since coming back from the trip and I'm glad I didn't know then, what I know now.
In this video, we will look at the Queen Mary's history, most popular ghost stories, and what it is like to stay on board. Let me know in the comments if you'd be okay staying on this ship.

The open portholes actually contributed to the sinking of the Britannic, Titanic's sister ship. The Royal Navy conscripted her for use as a hospital ship and many of the portholes were open to provide the patients with fresh air. When the ship started sinking, the open portholes actually allowed water to bypass the bulkheads of the watertight compartments.

It contrubute must of the sinking the mine damage was not really that bad, britannic could handle it and she could stay afloat but if it was not for port holes they inded made the water another entrance into inside the ship the forward motion helped the ship sink by maybe 20% contribution to the sinking

I stayed on the Queen Mary a few years back. Beautiful ship and a great experience. If you ever stay on her, when you're in your cabin, take the drawers out of the bureau and turn them over! You'll see historical signatures and messages written by Guests and the members of the Military that sailed on her! The oldest we saw in our room was from members of the military that sailed from New York to Southampton in July of 1940. Most were between 1940 and 1960. It was very cool.

Our family's story of the Queen Mary. My father-in-law served in the Italian Theater during WWII. He was a survivor of the Battle of Monte Cassino. He developed pneumonia as a result of the battle and was bought home on the "Gray Ghost". It was one of the very few stories he told of his time serving with the American forces in WWII. He also brought home a "souvenir" from his time on the "Gray Ghost". I have been to see the ship twice, once in the late 1980s and once in the late 1990s. I never had the opportunity to stay over night on her.

Great video, Emma! Very well done! The RMS Queen Mary is both a national and international treasure, and a iconic liner from a bygone era. I have loved this majestic liner since I was a child. In fact, if you watch old news reels and videos of her arrival in Long Beach in 1967, you will note the very large number of small boats and pleasure crafts "escorting" her into the port. I was on one of those small boats! We joined the flotilla or boat parade in Newport Beach, and escorted the QM on the very final hours of her seafaring days. It remains a very special memory for me. I ask all your subscribers and fans to support the efforts to save and restore the Queen Mary! She is the last of her kind and the last real link to the "golden age" of ocean liner travel. The RMS Queen Mary MUST be saved! Thanks for your great video profile and your advocacy for the "grand lady" of the Atlantic, Emma. It is appreciated.

I suspect Big Business has no stomach for Historic Preservation of these fading artifacts. Not much profit, or stock payoff. $3 million, easily raised if that many people worldwide pitched in 1$ each. Worth it to me and so easy. I wish they'd run a good PR campaign, like they did with the March of Dimes for Polio and raked in tons of money simply by people donating & mailing dimes to the White House.

Wife and I were driving around LA in my van (of course) on New Years Eve 1980 with no itinerary or reservations and ended up at the Queen Mary in the PM. Toured the ship on our own and had a few drinks in Art Deco Observation Bar, then had the idea we may as well stay on the ship for New Years. Actually had a room available for $80 and we could party in that bar that had no dress code. Drank way too much but had an incredible time.

The Spruce Goose has since been moved to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, where I visited it again in 2013. Both were fascinating. I loved the craftsmanship and history of the Queen Mary. I sincerely hope she can be preserved.

I worked on the Queen Mary both prior to and during the Disney take over. First off, Disney DID own her for awhile and renovated her spectacularly. She’s never been in better condition since Disney. That said.. the whole “haunted” thing is utter and total BS. Not one of us ever heard word one about any haunted rooms or areas … with the possible exception of maybe two or three people saying they “felt” or saw “something” at the escalator from the engine room where the dock worker was killed in the 1960s. That is until Disney oil over. They asked if we ever saw anything. Did we see this or that. What about in this area or that. Generally the answer was ‘No’ we hadn’t. Why? Because before Disney tried to get interest up in the “hauntings” it didn’t exist. This was a fabrication at worst, or a huge gargantuan exaggeration at best on Disney’s part to increase interest. A few months after we were Disney-fied, suddenly there was advertising of ghosts and hauntings and suddenly everyone “felt” or “say” things. Of course. If one looks for conspiracy they will find them wherever they look, real or not. Same thing. My wife and I stay aboard the ship every year partially because I still love the Queen and also my family immigrated aboard in 1962. Even the tour guides we speak with now admit that they know it’s all BS but they’re supposed to push that. The ship has an AMAZING history and absolutely incredible record with many first and wins in her career and is a shining example of a bygone era that saw us through the worst and best of times and in a style we will never see again. She doesn’t need all the BS hype about faked up “hauntings”.

Yeah! I was really into haunted stuff as a kid, but now- just knowing the history of locations and using my imagination to travel back in time is much more engaging. The ghosts of memories, different times in humanity's life have a greater impact than scrambling for a spectral, superstitious explanation of existence after death.

The Queen Mary is a glorious ship. I visited her in the mid-70’s. My paternal grandparents crossed the Atlantic several times on both the QM & the QEI. The wood, & the marvelous deco style make it a never to be repeated vessel. I had always wanted to stay onboard overnight, but with things as they are, that is looking highly unlikely. At least I got to stand inside her & think, “This is what my grandparents also saw!” 🥂

Thanks for this Emma you've made me want to stay there and explore. I use the term "Spirits" and twice in my life did have experiences with them so know they exist. The most powerful was when I was 20 after a close friend committed suicide by jumping off a local Dam. His body wasn't found for two months but as soon as it was and we had a gathering of friends, upon leaving that he was in my car for two months. I know this wasn't in my head because as soon as I exited the intense feeling was gone and I didn't experience it anywhere else. We used to cruise around and had fun in that car and I guess his spirit was simply not ready to move on. One day I entered the car and immediately realized his presence was gone. So yes a spirit can inhabit a location where they did not die.

I stayed on the ship in the early eighties and didn't have a run in with a ghost, but it was spookie and seemed very old, especially the grand room, which was very dark. An interesting thing about the cabin was the ability to select fresh or salt water for your shower! I t was actually non-functional, but a supposed health feature during an ocean cruise. I am sure it played fits with the plumbing for corrosion, but still cool!

Towards the end you mentioned the amount needed to repair the ship and that sounds about right. I had read this was the reason that most people's plans to turn the ship into something else, had failed. And I'm sure this cost greatly exceeded her original construction cost (about $17.5m back in the 1930's, which I think is about $330m today).

The ship is not haunted. Those stories didn't start until the 80's I believe and it was a way to get people to go to the ship. I love this ship. My grandmother came over from England on this ship as a war bride after WWII. It was still painting grey. She did not enjoy the trip. She said the seas were very rough and a lot of people were sick. I'm sure it was also difficult to leave her country and family for the unknown.

Lots of places do this. People will travel far and wide to visit something that is 'haunted'. The Banff Springs Hotel has a plaque up for the 'ghost bride'. Canada post even made a stamp for the ghost bride. Talk about free publicity. As an atheist I do not believe in ghosts. That said if there is an afterlife I hope there is an option for becoming a ghost. haunting randos would never get old.

Tbh the ship made me a little sad when I visited it in 2019. For years I had read all about her and saw all the glamorous pictures, and when I got there it was peeling paint, damaged paneling, closed public rooms, a vast lack of historic furniture or installations on the ship, and the carpet was rather poor in many places. I still had fun exploring the ship in the few hours I was there, but it was rather sad for me. Also I was actually in the forward rope locked and cargo area as part of one of the tours and didn’t actually hear or see anything. The most odd parts for me were actually some of the stairwells and reception areas. They were a bit poorly lit and empty, and it was completely the opposite of what I thought it would be like, so it felt very weird. Also as another note, the reason the pool isn’t open isn’t because of it being haunted. It is just actually structurally unsound because they basically messed up the ship’s structure when they gutted the engines, but didn’t shore it back up

Stayed there once in 2011/2012. After just checking in me and the person I was with layed down for about 10 minutes. We then heard several bangs from the closet. I opened it up to find the iron had come off of its hook and fell. But the sound was very loud and it wasn't just one thump from landing on the ground. It was about 3 or 4 loud bangs as if someone was slamming it from side to side before it fell. I knew that was a ghost instantly after seeing that it was impossible for the iron to come off of the hook , let alone bang around that violently. After that about 15 minutes later we heard a quick series of knocks on our door. We were expecting another couple to join us and we thought they were here. About 3/4 seconds after the knocks , I opened the door and no one was there. I looked down the hall and no one was there, at all. I'm convinced it's haunted.

I've spent a lot of time on the Queen, and can offer some opinions. First, the color corrections on the pool photos are off. the pool is green and blue, not tan. $300 mil for refurbishment is a low ball number. The ship could eat up twice that, and be hungry for more. Not to mention the cute village next to the ship is in ruins, and who thought it a good idea to park a leaky submarine next to her? The Queen has also been in continuous litigation since 1969. Lots of downsides to this On the bright side, Long Beach can figure out something. They have oodles of money, and do not want the U.S.S.United States in the harbor. Finally, Yes, I have felt tingles on my back when on the ship at 3.a.m. But, it isn't haunted any more then any other given piece of England. The ghost stuff is one of the few profitable aspects of the ship. The Hotel has never been a real moneymaker, and any possible way to flog attendance will be used. The management usually starts Halloween festivities in September, and only shut down in time for Christmas. Stories of dead people bring in more live people then any other aspect of the ship.

As a lifelong resident of Long Beach, I can tell you this city doesn't have oodles of money. Even worse, the city wants to punt the responsibility for the Queen to the Harbor Commission, which is in charge of the Port of Long Beach. They didn't do such a good job running the ship when she was under her care years ago. The city fired long time inspector Ed Pribonic because, well he told them how bad the ship had deteriorated. You can find his last report from 2019 and it is pretty sad. Great Video Emma, and hopefully you can come back after the ship is reopened!

Hi, Emma - I was very fortunate to have sailed on three different Cunard vessels, the Mauritania, from NY to Le Havre in 1961 whilst a student (musician) at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, USA. From Le Havre, we traveled by bus for our years stay as students at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. My return was on the Queen Elisabeth, 1962 from Southhampton to NY, returning from our year in Austria. I graduated from Oberlin in 1963 and traveled NY, back to Le Havre to teach music theory in the final season of the "Oberlin in Salzburg" program. My return trip was, again, from Southhampton to NY on the Queen Mary (the original one), in 1964. All the trips were "Tourist Class", meaning economy class, no windows, etc. I remember how excited I was to wake up and see a sheet of paper listing the activities for that day. There were about 100 of us students making these trips, and, being a musical group, we were always invited to sing for the first class passengers, a special treat. Oddly, my 2nd favorite travel experience was on the BAC Concorde in 1971, returning from conducting Liberace in London. Wish I could have traveled first class on the Queen Mary or the Elizabeth on that trip, though traveling across the Atlantic in about 4 hours surely beat the 6-7 days at sea, but not by much...Cheers...Bo Ayars

My husband and I once stayed 2 nights on the Queen Mary. Very interesting indeed. Went exploring the ship and somehow ended up in a corridor that looked very odd. It was very cold in that corridor and I got the willies. We looked for an elevator and quickly got in. To our surprise, the elevator was in a great state of disrepair. When we exited from the elevator we were in an area of construction and renovation! We somehow had gotten into an area closed of from passengers/customers. We also felt areas of cold and heavy air throughout the ship. I enjoyed it immensely and would LOVE to do it again!

Wow, the memories with the QM is a big part of my life. It's filled with love and hate. I remember when I first saw the ship back in the late 1960s. It was amazing to see this large mysterious vessel. I visited the Queen as a tourist many times but I also worked on the ship when I was a photographer. I would be hired by couples to photograph their wedding. The wedding chapel is small but beautiful. There are many great pace on he QM to photograph a wedding party. I also worked for a photography studio who photographed many formal high school dances and social events. The bad part about moving equipment on the ship is that the elevators are too small and not all of them go to the right places. It would take many trips on elevators and some times taking the stairs. Overall I love the Queen Mary and feel for those who lost their lives there. I was able to visit the remaining pool; I knew the right people to get me in. The pool is very strange with a cold feeling. The person who took me said that he has seen the lady ghost there by the dressing area. Nice of you to make a video on the QM.

Great video. I have seen her, but never stayed on her. You spoke that we no longer have 1st and 2nd class, which is good, but I do fear that we are flirting with a return to that style with some of the private access areas that some of the newer ships are developing. I always love that when you are talking to someone you meet on the ship, that you do not know if they are the richest or poorest person on the ship. We are all there to enjoy ourselves.

1984, my new husband and I spent 2 nights on her. The haunted rumors were just taking hold and the tours beginning. Well,, my husband I were prowling around and found the pool down in the bowels of the ship. He started singing a sea song in his baritone voice. All of a sudden we heard tour pass by an adjacent area. A woman screamed, I HEARD THE GHOST SINGING!!!"😂😂😂 We beat feet outta there and just cracked up! Lady, if you ever see this....sorry, not sorry!!!😂 PS. We had a porthole too! I have a photo with my head and arm through it, waving!

Staying on the Queen Mary is top of my list when I eventually go to LA. I don't believe in ghosts, but apart from that, I am sure that a lot of the ghosts are really just the normal noises which happen on a ninety year old ship! I would encourage a visit. The cabin especially depending on class may have changed. Originally only first class had their own bathroom. Since this is a new era and the ship is now a floating hotel… some rooms that did not originally have their own bath have been retrofitted for the modern guest. Much of the styling is still the same so you could still get a feel for what they saw. She is a beautiful ship.

Took a walk through the ship and took the haunted tour, but it didn’t include the engine room which they told us to go see separately. That is so awesome you stayed aboard the Queen Mary Emma! I hope they can save the ship! Now for another haunted cruise ship you might not know about. The Carnival Victory (currently in dry dock transforming into the Carnival Radiance) is very haunted. A crew member was found in the morning hanging dead from the outside railings above lifeboat number 8 back in 2009. The rumor was he was murdered although it was ruled a suicide. I didn’t capture any pictures or videos of an apparition in that area of this ship when I cruised onboard. I did capture 2 ghostly images not on a ship but at the Biltmore mansion back a couple of years ago when I visited there. You can see the pictures of the ghostly figures at the end my Biltmore Video on my KZread channel. I wasn’t looking for ghosts (nor did I see them when I took the pictures), they just showed up!

Another great review! Staying on the Queen Mary is a fantastic experience - the ship certainly has a great deal more character than any modern liners. However, when I was there she was clearly underused and very quiet - even the ghosts stayed away. I think she would have been better patronised and visited if she had been berthed in London, Southampton, Liverpool or Glasgow.

My brother and I did the Dining with the Spirits tour back in 2004-2007 (don't remember). During that time, you'd get a 3 or 4 course meal at Sir Winston's, the QM's fancy restaurant located aft. After, you'd go on a tour of the ship's "haunted" spaces which at that time included the engine room, boiler rooms, the cargo holds, the bow compartment that was damaged when she collided with the destroyer, the first class pool and changing rooms, and room B340 (which is a total lie created by Disney during their tenure). It was really cool, even if you don't believe in ghosts because you got to see a lot of spaces that are not accessible to the public, especially the cargo holds where lots of the Queen's furnishings lay gathering dust and the amazing naval architecture of such an amazing ship.

The banging you hear in the engine room at times is steam pipes. The ship being a steam ship still has features functioning on steam pressure. The steam plant is now on shore and piped on to the ship. Strange things do happen throughout the ship but most can have a logical explanation. Other sightings and experiences may have a logical explanation but to the person experiencing it can just be creepy. I’ve worked on the ship and likely one of the few including crew that has seen nearly every space on the ship. I love her and it’s in my opinion a great way to step back in time. Growing up not far from this ship is what started my love for these large passenger vessels.

Disney operated the Queen Mary after it purchased the Wrather Corporation, which had the leases to the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose plane (which is no longer there). I remember visiting the Queen Mary at this time and taking the “Haunted Ship Tour” given by Disney cast members. We also accidentally snuck into the museum after hours one night when we took an old service elevator that opened into the Museum area (we probably shouldn’t have gotten off the elevator…but…). It was dark and nobody else was there but all the music and sounds we’re still playing. The Queen Mary is a must visit for any classic cruise liner fan.
