Exactly. I hate it when they show you to your seat and then ignore you, no menus, no drinks.... I get to the point of counting down from 10 to 1, then I walk out if I haven't been served at all. Then, as in one case, they followed me, blustering away.

I agree, for £725 a night I would expect far more. A proper fridge (on a stand or plinth) a mini bar (complementary). Far more modern furniture, a proper walk in wardrobe. Larger tv's. A far nicer cooked breakfast (no burnt toast) and a decent level of service for dinner (no excessive waiting between courses) Given the amount of people that I could see at dinner, the excessive waiting between courses was unforgivable and worthy of complaint. Nope, for that sort of money I would not be returning. (or even going! lol)

In the past I often dined out as a single and found that I was always left till last to serve. Once I was shown to a table that the previous occupants had vacated and it hadn't even been cleared or cleaned yet ! I went to a carvery once and when it was my time to go up to the servery to get my food it turned out they had run out of roast potatoes. When I asked if I could speak to the manager they said he had gone out.

Your videos of the hotels you visit are very interesting to me. I am retired now but during my 40 year career in the hospitality industry I managed large hotels for thirty of those years in London, New York and Toronto mostly in the 4 star category. I know what the requirements are to achieve 5 stars. This hotel was nowhere near. The car parking arrangement was good but and the outside appearance of the building was beautiful. You should have been escorted to your suite by somebody and shown around. The furniture and fittings in the suite were far from 5 star. More like 3 star. The dinner service in the restaurant was abismal. 5 star service requires attentive and unobtrusive service. Totally lacking in this case. The English Breakfast looked dreadful, more akin to a greasy spoon cafe. This hotel are taking its guests for a ride. The £725.00 price tag would have been acceptable if the product matched the price, but for what you received was way too much. The General Manager should be ashamed of himself.

Much better room and a bit like yours, it was all abit old. Lovely bathroom though. The service at breakfast was top notch and in the tea lounge. When i checked out there were so many charges from the bar that were not ours, i managed to get them removed but the snooty receptionist wasnt happy. I sat in the lobby for a few minutes and heard the receptionist being incredibly rude about me. As we left and said goodbye to the lovely concierge and doormen, i saw her and gave kn my key and just told her that she had no need to be so snooty...... !

Hi Tim. I took my father to the Grand Hotel for a 10-day holiday back in 2008. Yes it is expensive but I wanted to give dad a luxury stay. The dinners were spectacular but after 10 days I was craving beans on toast! One thing I still remember are the really delicious scones that were freshly baked daily by the chef...fantastic. Sadly Dad passed away the next year, but I will always treasure memories of our stay at 'The Grand Hotel'. By the way, when we stayed there the furniture was very old and worse for wear, and it appears they upgraded the furniture after reviews mentioned that fact in the otherwise brilliant reviews.

So sorry for your loss, but you will always have that holiday to look back on and cherish those simple moments of just being together! I happened to spend the last year with both my parents before everything changed. Mum had dementia so I left my dream job to look after her as she would still have known if she had been put in a home and I had promised her when I was 16 that I would look after her, and ended up looking after both my parents. Sadly though after about 9 months, mum had to go into a home and dad soon after went into hospital, dad passed a few months later and mum passed during 2021 lockdowns. I always look back on that time as being my special time with them as I knew this was the last time I would be with them together. Wonderful memories of our last year! I wish you all the best:)

Thank you for your reply. I am very sorry for the loss of your parents. Our Mum died at home in 1982 from cancer, She was 61 years old. We, together with many thousands of family carers have shared the experience of looking after our loved ones at home so that they could remain in familiar surroundings for as long as they could. Looking back now, they were extremely special times and even though there were sleepless nights and distressing times near the end of our parents' lives, I feel privileged to have had that time with them. They had looked after me as i was growing up and i was just returning the favour, with love. I miss them every day and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I wish you all the very best too.

The bathroom was the best bit as its been refurbed, although that blind doesn't leave anything to the imagination! 😂

I feel like a lot of these places dine out on the vintage aspect of their hotels, but don't bring the standards in line with what people expect of a modern 5 star experience. You can keep the old style decor and feel of a place, but you have to be aware of what modern hotels are offering and at least match that, especially for 700+ quid!

We’ve stayed at The Grand 3 times. The most recent was 2 weeks ago in their recently-refurbished Superior Deluxe room. Much more modern decor and bathroom, and these rooms have A/C. There are 28 of these rooms which have been refurbished to a very high standard; presumably over the next few years they will gradually refurbish the remaining rooms, which are dated. We stayed in a junior suite once, and aside from being bigger, the decor and bathroom were the same as their standard room; hopefully, they’ll invest more in the decor with each step up in room grade - that would tempt me to book one of the higher-grade rooms. We paid £330 per night for dinner bed and breakfast - well worth it for the experience.

Very appropriate for Eastbourne, the resort of choice for those of advancing years. Also, sadly, the way we in the UK tend to do hotels; everything always seems to be just a little tired and below par. Just imagine what you could get in Spain for £750 per night, i.e. £10,500 for 2 weeks!

I have been very fortunate in my life and have been able to stay in the past at several 5 star country house hotels including Lainston house in Hampshire, Manor Oak in Castle Combe and South lodge hotel in West Sussex. (My husband used to work for the owners of these hotels and when we got married they let us stay at the hotels on our honeymoon for free, all inclusive). By comparison this hotel is decidely 2 or 3 star. It's a cross between the hotel in The Shining, an abandoned asylum and Butlins. I would say a price tag of £200 for the room and dinner maximum.

Yes it is pricey, byt you could have lots of the same amenities with a regular room which would be much less costly. It is refreshing to find that the UK still has at least one grand seaside hotel of which we can be proud. A change from the Britannia company which seems to bring grand seaside hotels to their knees. A simple hotel can be simple and that is ok - such as Premier or ibis. But a grand hotel which is run down and dirty has no place in any holiday plan. But the Grand in Eastbourne looks good. I am going to look this one up when I am next in Eastbourne. Thanks.

They are highly professional and friendly and always make you feel incredibly special. The lifts are beautiful. The clientele are not on the older side at all and families enjoy staying here. I have a feeling the 'sweet wine' or 'apple juice' on the table was actually some sort of fly trap. The fresh fruit being left on the table in the sun would probably attract flies else. In my student house at uni we had a problem with them and left a similar sweet juice out to catch them all!

When I was a child my dad's firm had their annual weekend conferences there. Delegates brought their families and so the atmosphere was busy and fun. I ate 3 course meals in that dining room with everyone else. Wish you had filmed in the children's playroom bit. There was also 2 television rooms down there, one for BBC and one for ITV. A big dinner dance took place on the Saturday night with a jazz band. Then a coach outing somewhere on the Sunday. . Good memories of a beautiful building.

Was it cider vinegar to catch fruit flies? Seems odd to in a bottle be right there by the fruit dish, but while I've never experienced that in any hotel, fruit flies are no respecter of even penthouse suites, so maybe. The flies are insidious. I have a small electronic insect trap for when fruit flies get in my home, as they do occasionally... coming in with produce.
