Why? If you want to build it very simply, use a rigid fork, brake only road levers and friction bar end shifters or stem shifters that will work on any combination of drivetrain parts. You could find practically everything you need affordably at a bike co op or a shop dealing with used parts. K. I. S. S. My favorite state of mind!

This weekend I had a ride by abandoned tracks on a rigid Gary Fisher 26". Bar ends on a flat bar give me additional grip position, basically I only replaced grips from damn hard rounds (pushing GRIP SHIFT texture into palms) to slightly softer flatends. For my terrain I could have 2sp cassette as tracks were laid on rather flat surface with some longer, but not steep gradients.

This is similar to my build. On the rear end I've done a Shimano 10s Deore shadow+ Rd with a wolf tooth tan pan to convert the cable pull from the road levers to the MTB rear d. Also a wolf tooth derailleur extenders to get a range of 11-46. I'm interested too see how this turns out.....keep up the good work.

I think the advantage with this is it takes wider tires and makes a good touring/ commuter because they have strong frames and rack mounts and you can play with tire sizes for comfort, efficiency. I have a few vintage mountain bikes, may try. But will keep the triple chain ring..

Try Ritchey Venturemax bars. Ive tried a bunch of dirt drops. These might be the best shape yet! A short drop so you can primarily ride in the drops, yet not too much flare so the hoods position isn't too narrow. You really should try a dirt drop bar in a high, level with the saddle position. You WILL have more control on rough terrain and be comfortable on much longer rides!

It makes it look like they were going to make a womens frame, but changed their minds immediately after. I do really like that the Rocky Mountain has a threadless, rigid fork! That's not so common on older, canti-lever MTB's.

@@Spindatt so still using the 10 speed shifter to retain the correct index? That seems doable. I would surely drop my chain because I would forgot about the last click and just happen to have the high/low limits out enough to allow it. Lol I'm sure you could get into the mechanism and put a travel stop in it somehow to remove the last click. Although all of this could be avoided by just putting in a different wheelset. Haha

kevinjfeeney77 that’s right. He was fond of the riding position, I seem to remember him saying something about his back with drop bars? But since every rider is different was looking for a different option. My Marin is not quite finished yet, but my few friends that have seen it think it looks crazy with Altbars. And I have them flipped right side up. If I don’t like it I’ll switch to drop bars. Sucks right now if you want instant gratification. Can’t just run down to the bike shop for parts. At least not where I’m at.

As a retro mountain bike collector, these builds annoy me slightly, but there are plenty of old mountain bikes I do approve of such upgrades, preferably those from uncool brands or lesser quality/spec. Also, might I suggest configuring your chainline properly. The correct length square taper bottom bracket doesn't cost much, and it's easy enough to calculate if you already have one in there for reference.
