I Spent Over $1000 On Wireless Car Mounts! Here's My Top 10!

Ғылым және технология

So what’s the best the best non-magsafe Car Qi-Charger? We’d stick with the traditional looking car mounts from Uolo and iOttie. Why? Because you can use them longer than the life of your current iPhone.
Over the last three months, we’ve been using and testing a $1000 dollars of car mounts and we’ll be honest with you, testing car mounts is terrible.
BUT we’re reviewers, not influencers so we have to do what the job requires us to do.
Here’s our Top 5 with Amazon links.
#1 iOttie Wireless Car Charger Auto Sense/Clamping Qi-Mount (mreh.ca/3uk8Tal)
#2 Uolo Volt Infrared Automatic Fast Wireless Charging Mount (mreh.ca/2Okjh2w)
#3 Pitaka MagEz Qi-Mount (mreh.ca/3fFBVgB)
#4 MagBak Qi-Charger (mreh.ca/2PiJ2kh)

0:00 Intro
1:01 Design
5:05 Functionality
9:48 Charge Speeds
11:57 Go Qi or Go Wired?
12:41 Final Top 10 Rankings
We based our scoring system on 4 different criteria which included price, design, functionality and charge speeds.
Price was simple. Cheaper products scored better. There was a spread of over $100 dollars between the cheapest and most expensive charger. And in general, the more money it was, the better. Chargers around $60 dollars seemed to offer the best bang for your buck.
For design, we looked at the wattage, whether or not a cigarette adapter was included, additional mounting pads, the # of ways of mounting, cable quality and whether or not you had to waste your time buying multiple parts to get the car mount.
For functionality, we looked at the different viewing angles/settings, how easy it was to mount your iPhone, and noise levels (some of the chargers are NOISY).
Finally, we looked at the charge speeds. Why? Because Qi-charging on the iPhone is NOTORIOUSLY slow so we wanted to to know who had the best charger.

So here’s the breakdown for the rest of the chargers #6 Mous Wireless Charger Car Vent Mount The biggest problem we had with the Mous mount was the charge speeds on the iPhone. The Mous charger had the one of the slower charge speeds for the iPhone. Mous does include one of their premium cables with the mount which is neat AND if you’ve got other people who use your vehicle that don’t use iPhones, this charger is going to be worth getting. Like other Mous products, the build quality is above average but when compared against the other products that we’ve tested, it doesn’t fare as well. If you’ve bought into the Mous system, getting the Mous charger isn’t a bad idea. If you need want a discount, I think we still have a 20% off code that works at www.mous.co. Use “mobilereviewseh2103f” for a potential discount. #7 Spigen Steadiboost x35W I’ve been using Spigen mounts for years now. Based on our ranking system, the Spigen mounts are apparently very average. The factor that lowers the score in our ranking system is the charge speeds. It is one of the slowest chargers that we tested. Now we will admit that the Qi-charging and MagSafe compatible iPhones are finicky but still…. The Spigen Steadiboost is one of the cheaper mounts that we reviewed so if price is of concern, get yours here: mreh.ca/31H2EAU #8 Scosche MagicMount Charge 3 This charger was a pain to get. Sure, Scoshe claims that it’s the #1 brand for iPhone accessories in Canada BUT you can’t actually get them shipped to Canada through their site. Though their customer service was nice enough to tell us that we can get the mounts through Amazon… The standout feature is the double pivot head. It allows you to get the perfect viewing angle for your device. Scosche includes a plethora of methods to attach your iPhone to the charger, ranging from taping magnets to your iPhone are adding them to a case. That improves the longevity of the product by a bit BUT that doesn’t really matter when charing your iPhone is is quite slow. See if your Amazon store can send you a Scoshe MagicMount Charge 3: mreh.ca/3mdKe4h #9 Moshi SnapTo I really liked the design of the Moshi SnapTo. It had a minimalist aesthetic to it. BUT with minimalism, you end up loosing some of the long term functionality that other manufacturers have. The standout feature of the Moshi product is the ability to mount the product on your dash OR in a vent. The vent mount attachment is cleverly hidden in the base of the dash mount which is neat. From a charging speed perspective, the SnapTo is average. The biggest downside is the actual method that you attach your iPhone to the SnapTo charger. You need a Moshi case. And as of right now, none of their cases are worthwhile to get. From our perspective anyways. Bought a Moshi case already? See if you can get a Moshi SnapTo on Amazon: mreh.ca/3cGTdHX

I've been using an iOttie Qi charger in my car for years with my Samsung phones and it has been solid. I agree, plugging in a cord will always be faster, but my car is 15 years old and does not have built in USB ports. I installed a new radio a few years ago with Bluetooth/USB ports, but I still use my iOttie everyday since it's in my eye line and safest for navigation.

I've been using the iOttie wireless charging mount for a bit over a year and I've enjoyed it quite a bit, but it has some downsides, some which are specific to my personal situation and some that are just a problem with the device itself. The first problem I have with the device is that it doesn't have any sort of small backup battery power that will allow it to open and close at least 2-3 times. Sometimes I need to charge faster, so I unplug the charging cord from the phone once it's in the mount and plug in my phone directly so it can charge at 25w instead of 10w. But once I do that, the automatic clamping doesn't work anymore, so if I take it out to type something and try to put it back in, I have to unplug the cord from my phone and back into the mount in order to get it to open. My second issue is how unreliable the wireless charging is, but it's kind of my own fault. I use popsockets popgrips, so there's a plastic plate on the back of my phone case after I twist the popgrips off. The thickness of my phone case, plus the popgrips mounting plate is right around 5mm, which is the maximum distance that wireless charging works at. If the phone moves in the mount at all, the phone will not charge, so I almost always end up plugging it in directly after it's in the mount, which is honestly a bit stupid, I know. I know I should just get a non wireless charging magnetic mount and plug it in, but I'm waiting for these new mobile accessories from Peak Design to ship, which have a more secure magnetic mount that work with wireless charging, so I guess I'll just make due until then.

I feel Quad-lock is very nice on heavily-vibrating vehicles like bikes/bicycles. Bad for cars because cars usually don't vibrate enough to justify the effort you need to lock it. But at this point it's a different category. Bike rugged phone mounts are another thing you can review :)

Wireless charging is really nice for extending the life of the USB/Lighting connector on your phone which is on of the main hardware failure points on your phone. That's why I use wireless charging for any phone I own on a regular basis and reserve wired charging in must charge situations. Less wear and tear on the mechanical hardware is always preferable.

We need a "Top 5" whiskey list from Aaron and Val. (Or an intervention) Why weren't CD mounts not included in this roundup?! Always found sticky pads to be annoying, and air vent mounts always seemed a little wonky. CD mounts are the way to go! way more stable and provide great viewing angles, most the mounting ball joint things(not all ) are universal in my experience. Using the Hatalkin magnetic car mount with random CD mount A+

The amount of times that I get in and out of the car was ridiculous its about 120 times a week. so the wireless chargers are superb in that context. no damage is being done to the phone at all.

My reasons for using wireless charging: 1. I can easily start charging my phone while driving, without looking for the cable and trying to plug it into the phone with one hand 2. I use a Qi-charger so the navigation doesn’t drain the battery, which is the most cases. If I’m low on charge I’d just plug in a cable. I’m using a $40 no-name charger with gravity clamps. Super easy to use, as this kind of mounts doesn’t require a special case or waiting for the automatic clamps to open/close. The only con is probably not holding the phone too tight, which is not a problem in most cases.

will you ever be doing a more in depth iphone 12/12 pro case review, like with drop tests and stuff like you used to do? there's a lot of cases out there. i was using a limitless 3.0 for a while but then it started to change colors (i have 2, one in leather which is fine, but the one i liked more was like a rubber leather with white speckles-one day i took it off, a week later i go to put it on and it was another color pretty much) i feel mous quality has gone down over the years since gaining mainsteam popularity. so i reverted back to an otter defender, it's prob the best case, it's a lot more slim than it used to be and best part is its the only case that seems to keep debris out. unless there's something better i am missing aaron?? i feel it's impossible to find a perfect protective case that is slim, with functional buttons that arent hard to press, and protective lip over the front and the camera.. maybe you know something we don't know??

Guess it depends on what people are wanting to achieve with their car charger. I've personally never used my charge cable with the intent of charging my battery. I pretty much just plug it in to maintain the battery when using GPS and the such. I think there has only been maybe two or thee times where I needed to actually charge my phone, and I'd use a wired cable for that. QuadLock systems are really good for anything outside of a car lol They work extremely well on motorcycles or anything like a bike / quad ect ect. I don't think I would ever buy one for the car because of just how the system works.

One of the first Qi car charger I remember was released by Xiaomi supporting 20W charging, later also sold by Huawei supporting 30W charging. shame you did not include any of them.

They mention everything besides the most important thing. How much noise the mount make while you use them in hard suspuension cars or offroad useage. Also how much it giggles? The video is amazing and i apriciate the work and money spent on it but please cosider this type of stuff for future videos. Most of the times details are more important than the spec values or general info/feels

Hi! I have used dozens of car mounts and while Canadian, live and work on the French Riviera. The sun is really hot here on the Mediterranean and the heat coming in through the windows is horrendous in the summer. Vent mounts suck as they block the cool breeze. Dash mounts on a disk work well, but... you have to make sure the phone is out of the sun, or the display gradually gets darker as the phone heats up. Currently, I use one of the extendable ones that a number of the mounts you tested do, and make sure it is out of the sun on the windshield. I have found as the sun is so intense, having a mount on the glass, means it will fall off if the car is left in the sun. My newest mount for my iPhone XR is a case that mimics the iPhone 12 and I have an after market MagSafe mount that, so far is working great. Keep up the great work, your reviews rock!!

I love seeing Val in the videos because you two banter a lot and it's super fun to watch, but I'm sorry about all the weirdos in the comments :/ also, yes on the QuadLock review, because I've been getting those ads EVERYWHERE and I seriously doubt it's as great as they try to make it look. Also, 57 minutes to go from 10-50%.... that is tragically slow and I'm firmly in camp anti-wireless charging with you

Ok, this is very in-depth. Thank you. Here's the problem: My LG Stylo6 (which really is an incredible phone), with a case is fat as H*L*. In addition, the phone hates anything magnetic. I don't need a charger, only a gripping-type mount that's deep enough for my phone/case's fatness, and ability to put the phone in without it FALLING OUT from it's own weight! Any guidance would be awesome. It would be nice if the manufacturers would show the depth of the grip of their mount in inches (or even cm would help). Cup holder mounts are a waste of time. The number of cup holders vs the number of phones is always a limited ratio. And you always end up with your phone out of safety vision for driving. Vent holders are the best, but JEEZ can't they make one that doesn't fall out from added weight?
