Hey, Splatty! I got this game on your first showcase of it and played it to the point that I beat the final boos of the time before I quit. There definitely is a perfect parry window and one of the things I ran into was combat becoming a bit too easy by the end. I couldn't take melee damage by the time I knew the timing and it made the final boos a bit too easy to beat. I'm happy to say that the window is still in the game but they aren't as forgiving with it. Happy New Year!

I think two things (maybe three or four) need to be done to the combat to make it more interesting and engaging. First, and hopefully very easiest, is give the parry animations a cancel. So if you want to parry in the middle of a swing, you can. Without that, the game feels like it has no control over combat because parries don't have a visceral and useful feel to them. You'll always left click spam until you can cancel the swing animation to parry. Second, get rid of the incredible RNG on damage numbers when swinging your weapon/firing your weapon. Make the damage consistent (based on stats and the type of weapon or damage type) and give players a reason to aim for weak spots or use specific types of damage (crushing for skeletons, for instance). Right now it seems to be "put biggest damage number on, swing endlessly with left click." Third, they need to make trash mobs less tanky. Less hps, but more dynamic combat for these. Again, the combat seems terrible because it's just you mindlessly spamming left click, and that can be fixed, but even if it is, making normal enemies bullet sponges is not a good move for fun gameplay. Fourth, bosses (and maybe normal enemies) *NEED* special moves that are telegraphed to an obvious degree so that you can either run, parry, or reposition yourself to either avoid massive damage and/or hit them in their weak spot very hard. This also might mean you would need to put some movement skills into the game (short range teleports, double jumps, dodges, rolls, etc) and might make your game be in danger of picking up a "souls-like" tag on steam, but so long as the combat isn't too punishing, it will be fun and engaging but not so rough that it'll discourage people who want to play. So to sum up, they need to add rhythm and timing to the combat, and add some variety to movement and movesets, and move away from the RNG on damage numbers. Not an impossible task, and I hope they add it in before release because the game looks *REALLY GOOD* otherwise.

Roughly half the video elapsed before touching on fast travel, which is a huge part of any open world game. No mention of crafting, durability, multiplayer. Appreciate the coverage as always, and will keep half an eye on this one. Regarding the damage ranges: it would be cool to see the spread on weapons tighten up as your stats and skills increase. I like the idea of them having some variance as not all blows are as successful as others. Maybe he parried you that time, or you didn’t quite hit the critical spot, or whatever.

  • @TheOnlyGhxst

They could just make the combat like Dark Souls and it would be perfect. Doesn't have to be complex, just a light attack, heavy attack, a dodge roll, parry, etc... but with smooth animations and gameplay feel.

Was about to ask if you played the first one, but you answered it. As someone who played it to death, i.e 200+ hours and 100% I find this one a bit lacking. Not because Salt is bad or "not complete" as some would say. I find it's worth the money, great fun, and I've got little issue with the dev moving on. However I don't like the, to me, consolly/mobile gamey "SPEND MORE HOURS ON ME" level ups and silly farming that goes with it. Sure Salt had farming ,e.g the oh-so-fun tiger teeth necklace, but it's something you do for the enjoyment of the exploration, not to synthetically progress, if you catch my drift.. Also music. Can't remember if that song loop, you know which one, is in Salt 2, but if it isn't then add it. I can't count how often I went to deep water just to listen to it. Next level audio design that. So much of what made Salt Salt is Will Sterling.

For me, making the combat more difficult would make it a _definite_ "no." I like the exploration part of it. Building and crafting are all fine, too. But any time a developer makes the combat too difficult for people like me - and that doesn't take much - I'll just have to give it a pass. And I buy a _lot_ of games. But the solution to that is options - lots of options, including options for a very easy play.

This is what I wished Ylands (Bohemia Interactive) game plays like, focus on sailing, sailing/adventuring between islands, nautical combat (cannon fires between ships) like AC Blackflag. And honestly the AC Blackflag nautical gameplay formula is great already. Which is disappointing why Ubisoft do totally different from Blackflag system in Skull & Bones game.

Back when the game was first previewed, the developer said they had zero plans to add in any nautical combat. I don't know if this has changed or not. Combat is serviceable and I do not expect it to change or get overhauled. It never happened in Salt and I don't expect it here. It has also been over a year and unless the developer has said they are going to change/overhaul it, don't hold your breath. This game is about cozy exploration. One of the big things Splat did not cover is World Tier. As you level up, your World Tier goes up. Unless it has been changed or updated when new islands are generated by you FIRST finding them, they generate based on your world tier level. World Tier is directly tied to level and difficulty of resources and enemies. You want better loot? Get that world tier up and find new islands. Also you are expected to use low level weapons until you can make Silver tier weapons or find them. His blacksmithing being level 20 is the start of silver tier. I seen lvl 40 was Ebony. That's your progression curve. Also yes there is a parry, you just have to time it right and you'd better learn it because click spamming in the later parts of the game aka higher world tier, will not let you last long. It is also entirely possible to discover content you can't do yet because you aren't leveled up enough. I am disagreeing with Splat about tying secondary levels to direct stats of your character. By doing that, you ensure the player is going to have to do something they don't want to level a skill they don't care about, in order to min/max the stats of their character. When this game was first previewed by splat, I beat it. I can see what has changed already from the last time I played this.

They could barely program functional boats in Salt 1, also remember they abandoned Salt 1 to sell more units.. Salt 2 is what Salt 1 was supposed to become before the dev got greedy AF.

There has been so many similar games released during the last decade... I guess the video didn't showcase the quest system, that's a shame. Also, I heard the dev straight up abandoned the first game.

I've been interested for some time in a game that has a lot of Elder Scrolls' mechanics, but (a) isn't brutally gloomy like so much of Skyrim, and (b) isn't super outdated and janky like every other ES game. I feel particularly bummed that the world leveling in Oblivion and ESO make it feel like your character never really gets stronger, but Morrowind is... actually that old feeling. All that said, Salt 2 sounds like it's *close* to what I've been looking for, but not quite there yet. Does anyone here know of something in this wheelhouse but is more polished?
