very cool to see the experience of a new doom player. and yep you're right about the counter picking part the higher you climb the worse it gets. every game in t500 players will counter pick me and make my life so much harder (probably knowing i wont swap to a diff tank lol) if you want to main doomfist it's probably recommend you have another tank hero in your pool. mine is queen and now shes busted 😂 anyways i hope you can try tracer next shes super fun and difficult and feels so rewarding when you outplay your opponents

@@willmcclard206 yeah that's how I try to play. I enjoy competing as well as I can without resorting to counter picks. People are able to shift their rank up a bit by counter picking, but you're ultimately not really improving at the game. To fundamentally improve at the game you should learn how to outplay your counters.

The worst part about overwatch 2 is that the devs promised it wouldnt be a counter pick type game. When it is. I cannot stress how many times I've wanted to try out a new character in quick play and get absolutely stomped by counters, forcing me to default back to my mains or what me team needs. Its exhausting trying to have fun with a game like this, and the devs really dont see that.

Tank counter swaps getting in your face is a major reason why using punch to get out can sometimes be quite risky. Slam gives you some height to escape corners or when your path is being blocked off. Also no windup and instant momentum even if you get hacked.

As what is essentially a doomfist 1 trick now at this point- That part about the prevalence of counter picks, working twice as hard for half the output, it hit hard. Its amazing how frequently you will *literally* win 1 fight as doomfist- and the *immediately* outcome the counters. Clackityclack clackityclack clackityclack, here comes orisa, hog, sombra- And then of course heroes like Zen and Ana- Which are in the game all the time *anyways*? Its a rough life.

Seeing Sam coaching is such a wild departure from him playing ranked. Definitely picked the right guy for the job here even if you could get like ZBRA or something, I doubt they’d have been nearly as effective at coaching. Also the genuine excitement for seeing you succeed is so damn wholesome. Side note: Orisa is such a poorly designed tank IMO. She has multiple counters to every other tank, can cancel and/or negate most of tank ults by accident and overall has no fun tank matchup. Doomfist almost definitely gets the worst of it but every other tank is just nothing but frustration when dealing with her and because of he overlapping abilities having a pretty short cooldown cycle, its basically impossible to outplay her unless they use all their cool downs at the same time and also don’t have ult. I don’t think she’s overpowered but I think she’s just garbage for the game and I’m afraid they’re gonna buff her to higher viability with stats alone.

One of my best tips is that when you know you are going to hit an empowered punch, aim your cursor at head level, then just walk forward and shoot without aiing nearly at all. if you punch them into a wall you will be close enough (90 percent of the time) to where just walking in with your cursor aimed generally at their head will basically 2 or 3 shot them every time. sometimes i flick to get the head after a punch and im way off.

This is why I advocate/suggest his "Best Defense" to also have a "CC Nerf System" where whenever he gets over health with one of his cooldowns he gets at least 25 to 30% resistance to things like Ana nade, sleep dart, hack, Ashe's dynamite, and so on. Coz on paper, Tankfist is fine and not bad, the problem is that the devs kept his counters back in his DPSFist era.

I'd say Doom also needs a secondary passive where each time he hits an ability (slam or punch) he takes a second off any of his abilities that are currently on cooldown. The max would be minus two seconds and would encourage Doomfist to actually commit more to a fight instead of having a huge amount of downtime, plus he only has two abilities that do damage.

This was quite an inspiring video and encouraged me to keep going in spite of the hardships Doom faces. It does suck having to worry so much about counterpicking, since it does discourage character mastery in a lot of ways. I'd propose maybe limiting counterpicking to say only once per game, and after that you're locked into your 2nd pick, but that's just me. Nowadays I just make sure to have a 2nd or 3rd character to back up for Doom (typically Winston or Sigma), should things like that occur. Keep up the awesome series SVB!

Other absorb/block-type abilities get so much value with less risk, Adaptive Shields, Fortify, Kinetec Grasp, provide instant overhealth/shield, or eat projectiles. Would it make more sense if CC just broke Doomfist's active block? I don't know, I just want people to be able to play the game.

That’s explains a lot when I played doomfist, I’m a new player to overwatch and I really wanted to play doomfist cause he’s such a cool character to me, though I was still new to the mechanics of the game I learn and adapt very quickly, I was doing very good for my first time playing but later on somehow just keep loosing to a point where I just simply suck at it. I thought I was bad getting at the game and so I keep trying to improve the best as I can but I just keep loosing, sometimes even not getting kills at all. So I started to see videos of how to play as doomfist and a lot of them I was doing right which makes me that I’m just bad as doomfist, so I keep looking for more information till I come across yours and as expected I was doing things as doomfist but the moment you said that there are counters against doomfist I was shocked cause ocounters that you mentioned are what I always come across. Roadhog, Sombra, and orisa, I thought the players were only choosing them cause it’s their favorite character but no, they were simply trying to counter my doomfist. And with that I’m gonna try to learn and adapt to fight against these counters as doomfist cause I ain’t gonna give up that easily. Thank you for that information.

as an 100 hour doom main, I have seen it all, they key to succeeding on doomfist is cooldown management and baiting I see so many new doom mains go onto the other team with their ult and get slept and cced instead of using their cooldowns ulting and then confirming the kills on the low targets, doom is one of if not the most mech intensive hero, learning how to play him is like trying to learn to walk again, Instead of being smart I btrute forced my way to learning him, I went from b5 to plat 1 where i sit now with around a 60% wr my best tip for new doom players is always have an escape cool down and never peak more than a 1v3 bc u will get smashed, go in do doom stuff and get out with the other cooldown, other than that dont play doom, quite litterly play anyone else if u dont want a brain tumor

The thing is for us OW old heads aka the OW1 players, it was optimal for us to be good with at least 3 heroes per role because of counterpicking. But what softened the blow--and you mentioned this before in your podcast--is keeping the ult charge(up to 25%). In OW1 if you swapped you started from scratch. In OW2, you swap and you can build ult quick esp with heroes as Ram, JQ (at the time of this comment with her mega buff), Sombra, Ana, etc which makes the counterpicking almost unbearable as a SOLO tank. Imo, counterswapping isn't an issue per say as we should be used to it, it's the fact you keep ult charge that makes it so frustrating

  • @johng9200

    @johng9200

I wish they made the ult charge proportional. So if you had 100% of your ult and you switch, you get 25%, if you had 50% ult and switch then you save 12.5% and so on. This softens the blow of swapping without making it OP to swap after losing the first fight IMO

An interesting competitive gametype would be Competitive Mirror. Basically you choose the character you want to play before getting qued up and the other team is just guaranteed to have that same hero. Also no switching in the middle of the game. Let's say you pick Doomfist, the other team will then have a Doomfist as well. And the dps and healers for each team will also be the same. I think since the game already devolves into a mirror match up at the highest ranks, might as well just do this instead and people can then play what they want no fuss. One problem with this is Que times though... Another interesting gametype, maybe in the Arcade could be Role Que Mystery Mirror. Here you choose a roll, but you don't know which exact character you'll get, the other team is then guaranteed to have the same comp as yours and again no switching in the middle of the game. It's kinda weird they did this in 1v1 but never extended the idea further.

I recently got back into OW last week and decided to do what youve shown here, I wanted to learn Doom, and as a tank, personally I think he is the most enjoyable to play, I actually have a ton of fun playing him but as soon as you start getting great value out of him he just gets hard countered and my fun goes out of the window. I managed to get to diamond with him but its not worth the head ache to continue with him.

The ban thing would absolutely murder him to the higher players and in general, he would be banned just about every time because of the argument that "he's annoying", and that would free the need for the rest of the match to hard counter pick because there would literally be no doomfist

That rant at the end is honestly why I stopped playing. Sombra to me is by far the worst offender. She makes the game less fun by existing.

*Tankfist simply doesn't do enough damage to potentially outplay his counters, which makes them ALL feel like hard counters.* It's as simply as that. Which is a shame, because he is one of the most fun heroes to play. The really sad part though is that we've been telling Blizzard this since the release of Overwatch 2. They gave him some semblance of playability in season 2 and then immediately revearted the changes. I'm worried they're about to do the same thing to Junker Queen.

I think your whole experience with Doom is exactly why OW does NOT need a hero draft system. A core part of OW is the ability to swap to any hero (within your role) at any time. Being able to play multiple heroes and recognizing when to swap on or off of them is the mark of a good OW player. This is why I think, that while onetricks are AMAZING at their heroes, and can make them work in many situations that they probably shouldn't, are usually soft-throwing. One of the reasons why hero drafts work in other games (MOBAs) is due to the fact that you CANNOT swap heroes once you lock in. You also have to remember that while a hero draft might allow Doomfist to shine, it is a double edged sword and can also hinder him even more by removing heroes that he either excels against or with.

I haven't touched ranked OW ever, and I was surprised to hear my friend say there isn't a hero-banning phase or limited swapping. Seems like a natural thing to have in a hero shooter like this (Siege does it effectively for instance)

Yeah, they tried this except the devs would pick the bans and they would last one week. It was always a completely random set of characters and was never taken seriously at all. One time the devs literally let a cat pick from a hat on who would be banned that week

As a doom one trick, a buff they can implement to buff him is have his power block actually block some CC, he literally has a metal fist capable of leveling city’s, I think it should block sleep jav and hook, freeze hindered pinned are all good CCs to stop doom and atleast are understandable

Playing doomfist is like asking opponents to swap to heroes that are hard to deal with for metal rank players. So not only you will have a hard time but also team around you will struggle.

Started with Season 1 of Overwatch 2. "I thought the point of overwatch is to play the heroes you like to play" - that's very intereseting, because as a Newbie, i was thinking that one crucial part of Overwatch is to know which Hero to play when and not play the hero you like most. Maybe that's why I'm stuck plat.
