Important thing: this is Asaya's (correction! Ayasa!) (violin) band! That's the band she wanted to form and she chosed the members carefully! Singer Akane is an ex-Predia and was once (2014-2015) part of a band with ... Akane and Kanami from Band-Maid (Mochi To Cheese)! Guitarist Yuki is a virtuoso knowned for her band D_Drive. Misaki is a fantastic studio drummer and also part of Lonesome_Blue. And, last but not least, stunning lefty bass player is named Wakazaemon (you can say "Waka") and she's so good she's part of legendary guitar-hero Marty Friedman live band.

Saw their first ever live show last year and will see them live again soon. Easily the best of the newer bands in Japan. Lovebites and Band-Maid connections with EoE: They're with the Victor label, as is LB. Arranger/keyboardist Mao Yamamoto, who's often worked with LB, and MV director Naoki Takeyama, who directs LBs' vdos, have been involved. Violinist Ayasa and Asami of LB are buddies and have often worked together, including a concert I saw of them backing a J-Pop singer. Guitarist Yuki's sister is married to a Japanese recording engineer based in New York and he did the sound engineering for B-M Miku and Saiki's vocals in "The Dragon Cries", recorded in NY. Vocalist Akane was in the group Predia, who were with the same management agency as Band-Maid, and B-M did some shows with them over the years; also Akane was in the Mochi to Cheese side project with B-M's Akane and Kanami. B-M's Akane went to Predia's final show. Drummer Mizuki was hanging out with LB's Haruna at a huge drummers' New Year Party in Tokyo few months ago-among the other female drummers there were Mari of Mary's Blood, Junna now of Hagane, and Yuri of Gacharic Spin. The girls were having a blast at their own table.

I live in Japan, work in the music industry here, have an MA in Japanese literature, and unlike you actually know what I'm talking about concerning Japanese music. Yuki is phenomenal guitarist, she's been part of an instrumental band metal, jazz, progressive fusion band D-Drive for 15 years. D_Drive is a definite must listen, Yuki and Serji play incredible harmonies and mesh real well together. Here's a link to one their most popular songs, especially amongst musicians, a beautiful instrumental called "Unkind Rain" kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y2Vm2cNvdZqdeJc.htmlsi=0KKiTVdWHG6TCFza This is a 'Yuki Cam' version from a live show where camera stays on her, but D-Drive also has and official studio MV where you can see the full band. Fun fact about Yuki, she actually started playing guitar in her late teens. She had always wanted to be a dancer like her sister who's a professional dancer, but they told her she was too fat (at around 100 lbs!) and got real depressed until her father, who's also a great guitarist along with her brother, encouraged her to pick up guitar as a way to occupy time. Now she's respected virtuoso guitarist and instructor and is a popular face in Japanese advertising, do adverts for companies like Toyota, Sony and Japan's biggest Saki distributor. Yuki, Saki and Miyako are my Holy Trinity of guitarist.

The bass really isn't flipped, it's just a left-handed bass. If it was flipped, the strings would go thin to thick from top to bottom. They don't, they still go from thick to thin top to bottom. Wakazaemon is an incredible bass guitarist, though. She's played with Marty Friedman on a solo tour and on his recent album, and she played live for KOIAI when they recorded their debut Blu-ray release. If she joined KOIAI, the amount of skill in that band would be off the charts!

As you said violinist Jill of Unlucky Morpheus is often lost in the mix (except when featured as in Angreifer). I’ve never not heard Jill in the mix when she’s actually playing. I’ve seen people say they can’t hear her in parts of Black Pentagram during reactions, but they usually say that in verses. If you look at the video though, she’s not playing during the verses. I think the difference is that with East of Eden the violence is pretty much always going, while in Unlucky Morpheus there are breaks in the violence parts which can come across as not hearing it because of how chaotic the music is

Initially, not in a good way. BUT... once my ear 'adjusted,' I went back and re-started. In a way they remind me of Dirty Loops. Not in music 'style,' but in that they are exceptional musicians with REALLY intricate rhythms and syncopation. Their technical skills are impressive. Wow. Okay, now I'll keep listening to the end. That violin soaring up top is SO great! Continuing... Okay, I am doubling down on my Dirty Loops vibe. So intense, so frenetic (good frenetic), so intricate. I HOPE this is not a 'one-off.' Bassist Wakazaemon’s popularity may indeed be because her public persona is as many people’s spirit animal. In fact I believe she is a workaholic geek who loves retro cars, minimalist lifestyle?(not sure), and music gear. She’s been a pro since her mid teens, and seems fiercely independent. See the link that someone provided to her interview on Marty Friedman’s show, where she discusses recording at home at the last second, and mentions that she’s always the youngest (an even bigger deal in Japanese culture). Left handed guitars are a thing. I love Kiko Loureiro’s comment (to Rick Beato) that you never see a violin or piano reversed for lefties (he himself is lefty but plays a standard guitar, like, best in world). But Waka’s bass is built to be played “reversed”: knobs at bottom out of way of picking hand, cutaway at bottom to make room for fretting hand. (Flipping a standard guitar would have these issues.) some guitarists have simply flipped standard guitars in the past. Then, only some of those people reversed the strings to have bass strings nearest face, while others truly play upside down! 🙃

  • @Greg-om2hb

That Van Halen sound was a guitar. Some lefty guitarists, e.g., Albert King, just flip the guitar over without re-stringing, and play with the fat string closest to the ground. That boggles my mind.
