I shoot only in Manual Mode!

#pixelviilage #mythaboutmanualmode
In this video, we talk about the Myth surrounding 'Manual Mode' that one will not be a considered a serious photographer unless he masters the Manual Mode. While that may be the truth of yesterday, we think that the present day photographer need to excessively worried or get discouraged about it.

Wanted to add another perspective to this. I’ve seen a bunch of people saying switch to manual mode if you’re a serious photographer. The thing is, even they don’t understand that they’re not communicating clearly. What they really want to say is, switch away from the fully automatic mode built into your camera, because if you’re using that mode, you’re not controlling anything apart from the framing. Moving to any other mode that allows you to control even one aspect of the exposure triangle is enough to say that you’ve switched to “manual” mode, because at that point you’re controlling things based on what you want to do artistically. Like it was said in this video, if you want to tell stories using depth, switch to Aperture priority, if you want stop time in your stories, use Shutter priority. Cameras today are smart enough to help you by controlling the other aspects. Disregarding these modes as “non-pro”, is like saying, even though my camera has built in IBIS, I won’t use it, because “Pro” photographers don’t need IBIS, they do everything “manually”.

I was forced to shoot in manual mode when I bought some vintage lenses. It made me realize how my camera reacted to the relation between iso, shutter and aperture. Thus it enhanced my pictures since I could control these settings according to my intent. One other thing is that it made me use less time in post also.

Your video finally adds the long overdue balance to the "must shoot in manual" mantra... My first response to anyone who promotes the "manual" ideologue is to ask, "so you turned off the auto focus control as well?" Invariably the answer is "no". "So how can you claim you captured the image manually?" I began my photography in the late 1960's, automatic exposure was in its infancy let alone auto focus. In the 70's the arguments raged backward and forward between the "aperture priority auto" and the "shutter priority auto" camps. And we learned the value of the depth of field scales on the lens and learned to prefocus the lens or set the lens to the hyperfocal distance... And then Minolta introduced the XD11, giving photographers the option of manual exposure settings, aperture or shutter priority auto exposure, and the arguments died away. Of course, then you have the "manual indoctrinated" photographer who sets the shutter and aperture precisely to meet the exposure the camera meter is indicating... "don't let that indicator go under or over that 'zero' mark!" 😄 It is much more important to understand the effects different aperture settings or different shutter speeds have on the final image. Somehow these concepts are often lost or confused in the modern on-line photography courses in the race to be perceived as a 'professional photographer because I shoot in manual!' ...just my thoughts...

Hi from Australia! I use two Canon r6 bodies for weddings. Usually I use manual to keep control, but I also use it on Auto iso frequently to allow the computer to expose for me, while I adjust the other settings for the look I want and the general lighting environment. If I want to take over, they have a third wheel which controls iso manually, so it's the best of both worlds

Wow this is exactly what i do now i am a self-taught photographer (my pure passion) and listening to this coming from you just boosted me more and sir you are absolutely right till today i am using Nikon d5300 it's way old for today's technology but it never ever stops giving me shots that even i thought it is not possible with this camera and yes it is all in the head first we need to focus on the real thing and think about the settings later . I almost break every rule now in my photograph but before flying high the rule we also must learn them well and make our basic understanding of the three pillars strong in order to play outside the boundaries.... I would love to spend hours in pixel village whenever I came there till then please make some more videos like this so the beginners can gain some confidence and not only blindly following some rules we must learn to fly as well

Manual exposure and focus becomes second nature after a while, especially with a good electronic viewfinder where the 'real time' exposure is displayed and Ibis takes care of focus accuracy. It is possible to dial aperture, shutter speed and ISO very fast and accurate in order to obtain the exact exposure You need. Once I've got used to it I never touched any other mode to avoid the 'auto interpretation' of the camera and keep the thinking process alive.

Great video! When photographing School Sports, I need to keep my ISO on Auto. The lighting in a gym, and on the filter outdoors at night is inconsistent from one end of the court/field to the other. My SS and Aperture are critical to remain constant. When outdoors shooting for my own enjoyment, I will occasionally manually adjust my ISO if I need to adjust my DR although often I use GND filters. By default, my main camera starts up in Manual f2.8 1/125 auto ISO, although I have no affinity for Manual mode. Front dial controls aperture and rear dial controls shutter. For me, this is the most advantageous way to be prepared for any spontaneous situation. Aperture mode inevitably sets too slow of a shutter speed. Likewise, Shutter mode sets the wrong aperture. Program mode sets the wrong Aperture, Shutter, and ISO :( When I can pace myself, I'll always set fixed ISO and either Aperture or Shutter mode.

I think beginners should definitely be schooled in manual mode along with delving into the advantages of the semi auto modes. It's a great way to learn what is happening, along with appreciating the history of photography. Having instructed a few beginners in photography it surely isn't that confusing to learn and appreciate three things. A matter of weeks (or days depending on how much practice) and most people of average intelligence can remember. It doesn't mean you end up with "better" photographs but I think for anyone keen to learn photography it is invaluable and it generally comes naturally. Just as anyone who wants to be a mechanic wants to know more than how to drive a car, or a guitarist wants to know what all the parts of the guitar do and what happens when I turn this or touch that. To me it seems like a natural process for anyone truly interested.

Nobody is going to ask you whether you shot in manual mode or auto mode, it is the output that matters. However, among the professional photographers too, there are those who think they should shoot in manual only and there are those who prefer auto. BTW, I too started my career in the early 80s and I still have the Pentax MX with me.

There are some scenarios, where manual mode is very useful, for example in a studio if I want to get exactly the same results everytime. Also if I want to shoot some dramatic photos with flashes manual mode allow me to be more creative (dark background, and only my subject fully exposed), but other than that I use aparture priority mode with semi automated shutter speed (I set it to minimum 1/120s) for 99% of my photos. Sometimes I may use exposure lock on on top of that (if I want good exposure only on my subject), but most of the time I'm happy with the results.. I dont worry too much if my exposure on my raw photo file will not look perfect, because it never look perfect. I always have to correct something in photoshop, because cameras have very limited dynamic range compared to the human eyes, so no matter what settings I will use, there will always too dark (underexposed) or bright areas (overexposed) on my photos. Thanks to photoshop I can take pretty much all my raw photos and make them look exactly how I want as long photo wasnt extremely underexposed (you can still bring back details to such extremely underexposed picture, but noise will ruin the end result).

The point regarding use of all functions in a camera is worth noting for any photographer. If a tool is available then it's wise to use it. But manual mode helps you learn a few things through trial and error. There is a learning curve which is important. The speaker himself said so. So to say get off manual mode is also not the right advice. Use everything learn everything. Few objections if you do not mind. Firstly the last statement...."choose another profession if you cannot have 100% keepers". That is a little arrogant. Even the best guys do not have a 100% hit rate. Generally you shoot more than what you require so that you don't end up with nothing. Secondly...the use of the term professional is misunderstood. You might not be a professional in the sense that you are not selling. But you still could be a top notch photographer. Its not necessary to turn your passion into a profession.

Sorry but I disagree. It is more important to learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO effect the final image... and to the learn the relationship between these three sides of the exposure triangle. Then learn about exposure and 18% gray and the value of the exposure compensation dial. Learn to understand the histogram. Once you understand these fundamentals of exposure then go ahead and shoot manual or your choice of shutter or aperture preferred auto exposure. Even try program mode once in a while! 😂 It's the understanding of light and how you control it that makes you a 'professional' ...not having the camera configured in manual mode with zero understanding of what you are doing with it!
