according to the USTA’s Official Rules of Tennis and the ITF rulebook, a vibration-damping device “may only be placed outside the pattern of the crossed strings” (Rule 4, Case 3).

So, let me get this right. I am not allowed to place my dampener one string inside the string bed, but am allowed to use a dampener which is as large as the lowest string, and place it there?

Is it legal to put more than one dampener if they are outside of the outmost string? Just thinking, maybe that's the better way to add weight then lead tape, ha!

the rules state that you may have a reasonable amount of dampeners so... it's up to interpretation. I would say yes you could add some haha

My friend used the thick seal from heavy duty canning jars at the head (cut in 1/2 lengthwise like a worm style dampener), and it drastically changed the swingweight of the racket. Yes, it definitely hit through the ball much more solidly (apart from the max dampening effect). Maybe the only physical negative is the increased air resistance. It's also inconvenient to tie in place and minimize the knots. A definite positive is it isn't carcinogenic. Another friend uses rubberized gardening ties, the stuff used to secure plants to things, like softer twist ties. Still another old guy would shroud all four of his outer strings in small rubber tubing prior to lacing/tensioning. The legality was a bit in question, but I don't think any official would definitively rule it bad.

You never said what action is to be taken for this ILLEGALness, which is: correct immediately, no penalty. Maybe an idea for another video would be a deep dive into why tennis was considered a "gentleman's sport", and why and how it has strayed so far from that ideal that maybe never was. (On the upside, at least our sport doesn't have a Patrick Reed).

interesting video idea. The whole culture around tennis is quite fascinating. Probably a topic that would get addressed on our partner channel, The Slice Tennis News.

You could have said that in 2 seconds, not create a 2min+ video and waste peoples' time as well as your own creating the video, editing it, uploading it etc etc. Use your time more constructively!

it's just a 2 minute video, do you have adhd or something? He gave the crucial explanation before the 1 minute mark, and followed it up with some interesting examples of where you can technically put it, according to the rules. Also who are the hell are you to tell someone how to use their time?
