I scratched my Rolex pretty good... Submariner one year update

Ойын-сауық

Scratches happen, its part of wearing your watches. Though it is never fun. At what point should you refinish your scratched (or in my case gouged) luxury watch? Sometimes we can get carried away as watch enthusiasts. I share my opinion in this video, as well as a one year update on wearing this beauty.

Yeah, the first scratch is always a WTF?! moment. There's a quick thought this isn't going to be enjoyable to wear anymore and maybe I should just flip it. But, give it some time and you may realize it's no big deal and just move on with it. Of course, it depends on the severity of the damage. But, in most common use cases, it's liberating to just forgive and forget keep loving it.

I think the frustrating thing is not knowing how you got the scratch. I think that would probably bother me more than the scratch itself. I think you're dealing with this with the right attitude though. At the end of the day, it's one hell of a lot of money to spend on a watch if you aren't going to wear it and get full out of it, and you can't do that if you're petrified of scratching it all the time. And like you said, you can always get it repaired in the future after it's picked up more scratches, should you feel the need to.

Very nice video. Scratches always hurt, but I think, they add to a watch in what will become YOUR watch. I have a Sinn EZM 7 for about a year now, which was my grail piece, because I'm a voluteer fire fighter and it's just the perfect piece. And about a week ago, I was doing some work in the garden and we were lifting a big stone trough and it happened. I heavily scratched the clasp of the metal bracelet. It's ugly and I hate myself for being so stupid, but it's just what it is and it's not the end of the world. But also it would have happened innevitably in a future emergency, where my fire brigade would be called and we would be doing heavy work, where I can't focus on my watch not getting bashed. Keep up the great work. Greetings from Germany.

I realized that for light scratches they sort of go away a bit (smooths out). I'm glad I didn't go and buff it out (there are downsides to that too).

I get it. I wish I was as accepting of scratches and dings as other watch collectors but I am not. My father kept his Rolex in very good condition for 50 years before he passed and he wore it almost every day. To him, its condition was a testament to how much care he took of something that cost him 4 months of wages to buy. His Rolex meant a lot to him because he was never a man of great means, not even close, but the watch on his wrist represented success and hard work. It was his totem (to make an Inception reference) and it imbued confidence in him when he was naturally a shy man who had social anxiety. Because my interest in watches is rooted in that watch and my relationship with my father, and I am very much my father's son, I try to keep all my watches as close to like new condition as possible. Sorry for the long and overly personal comment. Enjoy the watch in whatever condition it is in. Wear it in good health and make more memories with it.

Oh man, that would drive me crazy! It is such a special piece. Truthfully, if it were mine, I probably would have it fixed. I have a hairline scratch on the bezel of my grail watch, a Jack Heuer Autavia 80th chrono reissue, and it still pains me although I have learnt to live with it. I agree that watches are to be enjoyed and scratches are a part of that journey with your timepiece. Unfortunately, I am OCD, and collecting mainly Seikos for 50 years has turned out to be a blessing. For some reason, the scratches that I have accumulated on my 32 Seiko watches don’t bother me in the least, even on my 6139 Pogue which I bought new. If my Turtle, for example, would get too badly bashed up, I would just buy another. For some reason, Seikos are exempted from my obsessive tendencies.

Same thing happened to me on a watch that was (at the time) the most expensive watch I had ever owned and had only owned for less than 24 hours. I am ok with scratches but I have to say... that one hurt. But in the end, it is all part of wearing watches. Subs look good with a bit of wear and tear anyway. From what I saw, it probably happened when you were reaching into something and it got hit when you were pulling your hand out. Movements like that are very unconscious and you wouldnt have even noticed. Its probably a movement that you dont do very often because if you did, your other watches would have similar marks. Also, it had to be metal, and sharp. Nothing else would be capable of doing it! Do you have any metal stands or shelves. Ring any bells? Anyway, dont worry. You wear metal watches, we wear metal watches. If they didnt get scratched and marked it would be bizarre. The crime would be having a really really nice watch and not use it!

Nice video, Bruce thanks for sharing. My workplace has these heavy old steel filing cabinets, have to be from the '40s or '50s, talk about a watch dent waiting to happen! It bothers me, but what are you gonna do, leave it home in bubble wrap? You have to wear and enjoy or otherwise what's the point?

Hi Bruce, That is a nasty gouge on that beauty. By the way what is the daily accuracy on your hulk. I am getting a daily accuracy of +2.5 seconds on my Rootbeer 126711CHNR, should i get it rregulated? what is your opinion?

Idk if i agree with the “no polish” philosophy with this particular watch model. The modern submariner is pretty beefy and does not have lug holes so a one time polish would be really difficult to spot compared to the submariner of old

The fact that the gouge is on the inner wrist side (side not facing your palm) tells me it could have been from either the car seat belt or when putting on a belt. Sometimes you don't know bc your mind is on something else and it happens so fast.

They are meant to be worn and when you wear them, things will happen. I've gone hiking with my Explorer a bunch and no significant marks. Then one day I was walking in the kitchen and banged It off the counter. Ding in it lol. Oh well

They have a habit of replacing parts during regular maintenance anyway. They go far beyond what's necessary almost as if everything was disposable. And they charge for it of course, probably more than it cost them to make the watch. So, there was probably no need to do it now but hey, at least you get to enjoy a shiny new clasp.

I just put a big dent on the bezel on my new 3861 Speedy sapphire sandwhich. Hurts, and ngl, I kinda wanted to sell it after, but people are right. Any watch will eventually get beat up no matter what if you wear it. That's normal, that's part of life. And a well worn watch is part of the fun. Can't have fun with a watch if it's a safe queen.

Hard to believe that people complain about the text on the Pelagos dial and yet this thing gets a total pass. There's easily as much of a novel on the Sub as there is on the Pelagos. With that said, if I was ever going to get a Sub, this green would be it. Beautiful!

I got a big scratch on my BLNR and didn't know how I got it. After a while, I got over it. BTW, love your videos. Can you do a video of your opinion on wearing a Rolex sports daily. I used to wear my BLNR daily until I learned that I can no longer get any Sports steel from the AD for regular retail. Now, my BLNR is a safe queen because I am so afraid of losing it and not being able to replace it (unless I pay grey market markup). I feel psychologically I can't fully enjoy Rolex because of the fear of losing it.

I just got a horrendoiusly deep scratch down the polished bit of the lug on my 41mm sub date. It is on under the crown so I see it whenever I glance down and it's an eyesore. I really hurts because it's my first rolex and have only had it a couple months.

Keep your head up everyone I know you're hear cause you just scratched your watch like I just did! Just inherited my great grandfathers 34mm Omega 10K gold bezel watch. There were some black marks on the bezel and I was thrilled they started coming off with my fingernail. I wanted to expedite the process so I grabbed a credit card to get more leverage. Little did I know my Amazon prime card has a metal layer in the middle!!! Felt dumb, trying to clean the bezel, ended up scratching quite deep. Its all I can see now. Going to try to take this advice and accept it.

The polished case sides and lugs on Rolex’s (and I’m sure most watches) seem to get scuffed up really quickly. Even from not normal wear/careful wear. I find these scuffs and hairline scratches really annoying. Do these bud for polish out ok? It’s stopped me now from getting any polished watches. Is this just normal? I hope you got this deep scratch sorted.

  • @baze3SC

It's nearly impossible to avoid hairline scratches. Even your clothing can cause them. There will always be some tiny speck of dust hidden somewhere between the fibers of your shirt cuff etc. Rolex uses the 904L steel which is more resistant to tarnish but it's also softer. However, even "regular" 316L steel will show scuffs given enough time. Even if you're extra careful during daily activities or while putting away your watch. Minor scratches can be polished away but it will only make new ones more visible and it actually decreases the vintage value of the watch.
