Need to go with the 14-ft door so RVs and the like can be parked in your shop. You never know what the future holds! The three overhead doors with high performance insulation to take a look at are the Raynor TM200C, Haas 2033-20, and the Clopay 3720. The Clopay was the cheapest for me when I got my 14'h x 16'w door.

Thankfully I no longer live in an HOA, so I can do whatever I want. That being said my shop walls are just the sheet metal (24 gauge) with fiberglass insulation batts behind them. I used to think this made me lucky - it was fast and easy to install. However, I have since learned that anytime I want to hang anything off the external walls outside or inside the shop, I have to build out a 2x4 wall in any case. I didn't really end up saving any time (or money). Oh well - learn as we go! Love the progress on your shop, thank you for sharing it with us!

Man, I felt that last clip. After mine was done I just sat inside and stared at everything for about an hour. It's a great feeling being inside a blank slate. I will tell you this... Jack-Shaft door opener. It might be a bit more than a chain or belt drive, but the things are super quiet. additionally, it's one less thing that "pierces" into your shop. I've got one on my 12'x12' door. Also keep in mind when you're doing quotes that you may be asking for an odd size, which can cause the price to exponentially go up. Using standard dimensions will keep it slightly more reasonable. Loving the videos! Keep it up!

13’ door is high enough. They can run the door rails at an angle to follow the roof. Also go with a lift master garage door opener, they are very quiet and reliable. I just had 2 installed at the firehouse I volunteer at.

Regarding your door situation. Do what I call a double frame. Frame for the large door that you may want or help sell the place in the future. Frame in the smaller more affordable door, inside that frame. When it comes to the brick work. Brick it with expansion joints at the larger door. Maybe add some decorative touches within the large door frame so it blends in and looks like it was done on purpose. Down the road, easy tear out of the door to install the large RV style door. As for windows in the garage door, my opinion absolutely a must.

Here's a probable solution to your garage door opener. I bought and had installed a direct drive opener. It attaches to the pipe that turns to open and close the garage doors. Lowe's sells them and believe me when I say it's a lot easier to install. Now, thats on a regular two car garage door, but hey maybe they make one for a longer door. It's pricey, but worth the money. It also comes with an electronic lock so no one will be opening that door when you close it. It was around $500. Last year so it might be a bit more now. Good luck with the project!

Put in a flat slat non insulated door and then insulate yourself. There are plenty of videos on how to do it and it’s cheaper and better insulated. Also, if your roof is high enough, run the garage door straight up, not up and over. That way you aren’t blocking ceilings and lights in the building when the door is open.

Great vids. My brothers and I build our own shops on our ranch here in Texas as well, and it's way more work than people realize. We went a bit bigger, and built 3 shops totaling 32,250 Sqft, encompassing a full paint and body shop, metal fab and cnc, wood shop, car workshop, powder coating, and 6000 sqft showroom for our car collection that is already too big, even with 5 four car storage lifts. We built almost everything ourselves except for the concrete, and after putting the roof on the 110x100 paint shop we said no and had the other shops roofs done. We also had spray foam done, and had 8 full glass garage doors installed, as well as 5 storefront window sections that are 21'x8', and 3 sections that are 16'x8'. All we have left is grinding and polishing our own concrete, pouring 40,000 sqft of concrete drives outside with all the storm water drainage, and finishing off the interiors completely so we don't see any insulation at all. Keep up the great work, and good luck with the rest of the project.

I built a 24x30 metal building (not red iron though) and used sectional garage door. My opening is 18ft wide so it took a little longer to get the order, but it was a fraction of the cost of a roll up door rated for our wind requirements 120mph in the Mojave desert. My door is only 8ft tall, but my peak is 15ft with a 12ft ceiling height at the trusses. I had them use high lift tracks so the door snugs up to the ceiling very nicely. Unless you need the extra height for an RV then limit the size of the door because even the most expensive sectional doors don't insulate as well as the walls. I have 2in of closed cell spray foam on the walls of 24gauge PBR panel and 3/4 ACX plywood, but I can really feel the heat from the door compared to the walls when the sun is lower in the afternoon blasting my garage door. Nearly any local home garage door installer can get and install sectional doors that will work very well for much less than the cost of a commercial roll up door.

You should talk to the house garage door sub to see if he can add on 1-2 extra door sections. 8’0” too short for your front fascade. 10’ or 12’ would look mo bettah. You might have to use a 3/4hp motor for add’t weight….. You should also check how much more to hang door higher. With an 8’ door head height, hang door 10 or 12’. Will provide way more headroom for normal activities, and more latitude on car lifts in the future. IMHO. Good luck. From a bruddah in Nuuanu.

I think you should do a 10 foot high door high lift at 3 to 4 feet whatever you can that will fit your wall hight. The door will sit in the high lift so it won't be 10 feet back into your shop giving you more room for car lift clearance. If you do a 14 foot door it will be 14 plus into the shop plus if you use a trolly opener that will be another 2 to three feet. I'd use a jack shaft opener lift master makes a 98032 that is made for bog heavy doors or the 98022 would work great on a 10 or 12 foot door. Just my advice.
