Aswan, Egypt - After taking the overnight sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan, it was time to begin our Nile River Cruise from Aswan to Luxor.
Before we even got to see the cruise ship, from the Aswan Train Station, we met our Aswan guide for the day and immediately boarded a small boat en route to the Philae Temple.
The pyramids of Giza are incredible structures, but this is something completely different. The Philae Temple complex is primarily dedicated to the Egyptian Goddess, Isis, the mother of all gods, goddess of the sky, moon, healing, and magic among other spiritual powers.
It served as a protective boundary and barracks for Egyptian Pharaohs, and then also for the Greeks and Romans during each of their respective time controlling this region. Which is why you can see Monuments of varies eras extending from the Pharaohs to the Caesars. Including an amazing structure called Trajan’s Kiosk, the unfinished monument dedicated to the Roman Emperor, Trajan.
From the Philae Temple, we made our way back down the Nile River past Aswan. The city of Aswan was a frontier town of Ancient Egypt, even mentioned in the bible under its original name.
Aswan was a trade center, serving as the gateway to Sudan and Ethiopia. Occupied by the Persians, then the Greeks and then the Romans, I mean, we’re traversing up one of the most important waterways in the history of the world, it’s just crazy to wrap my head around.
To this day, one indigenous group still calls this place home - the Nubians.
The Nubian People are an ethnic group who are indigenous to Nubia or the modern day region of northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Nubians originate from the early inhabitants of the central Nile Valley, and they speak their own Nubian languages, as well as Arabic and some English.
While this is considered a traditional Nubian village, I highly doubt their ancestors sold so many plastic camels. However, they are a trading people, and for today’s Nubians here, they’re trading handmade trinkets and souvenirs for foreigner cash. They’re survivalists.
Now, I still can’t figure out if this place is showcasing Nubian culture or exploiting it, but, I would have loved to stay here longer to see beyond the colorful exteriors.
From here, we head back to Aswan in time for sunset and to check into our Nile River Cruise.
The next morning, we take a three hour drive south, to Abu Simbel, the grand temples of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II.
Ramesses built Abu Simbel to impress upon the people in this region of Egypt’s great power and control as this area was an important source of gold and other precious trade goods.
Perhaps the most incredible aspect of this site is that fact that in 1968, the entire complex was moved to this artificial hill, piece by piece, exactly how it was found from it’s original resting place to avoid being flooded by the creation of a man-made lake.
From here, we head back to our Nile River Cruise parked in Aswan to continue our cruise north to Luxor.
I hope you enjoyed this Egypt Travel Vlog from Aswan, Egypt as much as we did making it! ❤️ If so, please hit that "👍" button, and leave a comment!
See ya next week!

Thank you all so much for watching! ❤Side Note: I realize Waleed didn't explain the full story of the Nubian people on camera. That could have been an entire episode on its own (which I want to come back and create). I explain a bit more in the voiceover if you listen carefully, but I am still learning as well. 😅 Huge shout out to my friends at @iEgypte for setting this trip up last minute. If you want to travel Egypt, I highly suggest sending them a message on Instagram (instagram.com/iegypte/) and tell them I sent you! See you next week from Luxor!!🙌

Gareth, I have been following your channel since your trip to Hawaii with your mom. 😃 All your videos are super informative! My family plans to visit Egypt this Christmas. I understand that you took a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor and hired private tour guides. I want to do the same too. I thought that cruise already included guided tours. Wondering if the private guides are included in cruise booking as an option, or you need to hire them separately from the cruise service. Please help to clarify. Thanks very much!🙏

Please do an episode of the Nubian people (as long as the powers that be will let you fo so). As I understand it, they had a culture that celebrated the human form, in that the youth were encouraged to be unclothed. It so contradicts strict religious doctrine of Islam and Christianity, that this tradition is probably harshly suppressed. What a better world we would have if we could appreciate the freedom of each other and love people for who they are.

@@GarethLeonard I just found your KZread channel last week but have watched maybe 10 vids and find myself thinking about them when doing other things during the day. And can't wait to get home and see the next chapter. (One thing I'd like to suggest is some numbering system so viewers can watch them in proper order. KZread puts them up randomly.) Your photography is great! Gorgeous! I'm a still photographer so appreciate well composed, well focused delail shots! Sunrises? Sunsets? Cliche? But jaw dropping! Those shots reflected in the water like Siwa I think we're amazing! I so envy you and your "job"! At first I was thinking "Oh nice shots and friendly funny gleeful narration." But came to realize the organization that's gone into these is mindboggling! That one where you were explaining how to not get ripped off was great! Also like the lengths. If I see vids over 30 mins I tend to swipe away. 20-30 mins is perfect! Keep on trucking for the rest of us who aren't as daring or able to go to exotic locales for various reasons. Wish I had traveled more when I was younger. Did some but not nearly enough! Thanks for being you! I'm always happier after I watch your adventures! Gary D.

When I saw them this am,they had just arrived in Giza. After finding their hotel, they realized that a whole bunch of camels used for tourist rides were "parked" right outside their window.Whew!🤧🤧😷😷😷 Less than outstanding. They also did a three night river cruise and saw Aswan temples and went to a Nubian village as well as Abu Simbel. The cruise was a good because the tours were all organized and it was chill. I have to give you kudos,Gareth, for always representing our country so we'll as an American traveling abroad. You are always warm, friendly, and open with a big wide smile and a kind word. You always make sure you connect with the locals, especially the kids.Everyone always loves you.You represent everything that is good about being American! Visited Egypt last month and it was one of my best holidays ever. Didn't do a cruise, but the big advantage was we could go to abu simbel after all the nile cruise tourists. We could experience Abu Simbel with only 25 people on site instead of hundreds. I recommend Egypt to everyone who likes ancient history and culture.

Although I have already been to Egypt 16 times, I was there recently for 4 weeks, I have never been on a cruise before. I stayed again in Asswan for a few days. I would like to do one one day, but certainly not on this type of boat, which I find very impersonal and which keeps you far from the life of the populations on the banks of the Nile. Moreover, Gebel Silsileh for example, is not accessible by these big boats. You can only pass by... so I would chose a cruise in a Dahabieh, a much smaller traditional boat. It's a more a la carte, more local and for me, more magical experience. I would also like to take a cruise on Lake Nasser, again on a smaller boat. Thank you for mentioning respect for monuments. we don't touch anything, we don't climb on anything and we avoid the rubbing of backpacks on the walls as much as possible. It's catastrophic and it does great damage year after year. Many do not respect monuments much older than what they can see in museums at home and lack a minimum of education, only knowing how to take selfies. It's a sad...
