I resigned from my teaching job.

I actually left a position when an admin disrespected me in front of a student and his mom. The minute the words escaped his mouth I knew I would leave. I work in a large district so was able to find an easier position. Didn't tell anyone. Just left. It was the best feeling.

Good on you! Unfortunately with my contract, I was required to give a 30 day notice. I was quitting that day regardless, I just was lucky enough to get the call a little bit later offering me the new job!

I did the same thing in 1980. The superintendent referred to me and my female colleagues as “broads.” I walked out of his office, finished the day, stayed an extra hour to write a letter of resignation and collect my personal belongings. I drove away and didn’t return.

Congrats on the new job! I subbed for Wake Co. this year (primarily at the HS level). One school, in particular, had at least 3 teachers leave in the middle of the year. Based on how that school was run, I don't blame them 😅 I'm glad you did what's best for you!

Breia Monet thank you. Yea, it was a bit of a mess this year. I heard that other schools experienced the same thing when they moved into temporary new buildings and that it got better when they moved back, but I wasn’t willing to stick it out and find out.

Do it! Life is too short to be in a job that makes you unhappy! I have found so much more fulfillment being in a job where my supervisor allows me to set boundaries and where I have flexibility in my schedule. I still work a “9-5” but it’s way better than it was!

@@wall_to_wall thank you for the advice. I am going to try to take that leap. I just need to make out the transition notes and summit it to my numeracy coach. I am not a perfect teacher, but I just want people to tell me the truth about my instructional style instead of making it a topic of discussion.

School starts at 7:10??? Where I’m at it starts at 8am. More scientists are coming out and saying it’s better for kids, especially teens, to start later in the day, so it’s just crazy to me for them to start that early! I’m so sorry you had such a bad experience in your district. You definitely made the right decision to get out of there! I’m so happy for you that you got a better job. I’m excited to see how you do with it!

Thank you. It was mind-boggling to me that school started so early. The county did that because we didn't have enough busses so we had to stagger start/dismissal times. It was incredibly unhealthy for my students. Some were waking up at 5:00 AM!

Even with Elementary starting at 7:50 for me we had to be there at 7:30 and if I want to get up and I didn't work at my daughter's school and have everything going on I'd have to be up at 5 or 5:30. No one's awake at that time and I hate to say but School shouldn't even start until about 9.

Good for you for taking care of yourself! I taught 28 yrs and after a really horrible principal who was at my school for 3 yrs. She disliked teachers. So, there was a great deal of stress. I came down with fibromyalgia, had to go out on medical. I've been sick ever since.

Congratulations on your new job! Honestly, I don't blame you. Teaching is so very hard in and of itself and then to not feel supported or valued on top of that...ugh. I teach in Michigan, and we certainly have our issues, but I've heard some horror stories about teaching in NC (i.e. compensation for Master's degrees, etc.) I'll definitely be sticking around!

Casey thanks, Casey. It was a difficult decision. I didn’t want to feel like in was giving up, but at the end of the day, I reminded myself that I did not go through all the trials and tribulations of growing up in poverty, struggling in college, etc. just to have a job where I was unhappy. NC is definitely one of the worst states to teach in, I think.

The whole issue of not granting Master's pay after a certain year...sounds very familiar. I retired last year after 27 years with my pension. I couldn't take the stress any more. And the cronyism and nepotism in the system. Those who are good at what they do are stuck in their positions...those who know someone get the jobs out of the classroom making a lot more money. I couldn't take it anymore.

Well I was a preschool teacher a little bit in the nineties and I left that because I didn't like really teaching preschool even though I went back to having long-term Subs preschool later on as being a substitute teacher 10 years. I went in January and I have a few jobs I could go to just to keep it open, however, I've actually graded and did lesson plans as a substitute teacher and didn't even get more pay. Not all the time but quite a bit in my 10-year career of substitute teaching. That's another thing is everyone acts like it's not important but here in Florida they were trying to get coastguards to come be substitute teachers. Also, I found out in Florida that everyone gets the same pay I get with a bachelor's degree after I've been there 10 years and had a few raises just coming out with a diploma and I didn't get any higher pay. Another problem is that all the principles of secretaries that I work for at two schools mainly because one of them was my daughter's elementary school left and I had skin cancer and then I recently had polyps removed so all these new people don't really know my situation and did not really understand so it's been one big mess. I am getting more at my other jobs anyways but it still feels sad and disheartening and I feel like I'm missing something cuz I've been doing it now for a decade and it's hard to let go.

The present school system was designed out progressively weed out the non-hackers especially after the sixth grade through the twelfth. When social promotion was introduced to especially secondary levels the system was undermined, owing to pressure from parents who falsely believe that their idiotic offspring units are “college material”. I’ve worked with fourth grade teachers who claimed that the system breaks down even at that grade level. Wishful thinking does no one any good. We need to bring back trades programs starting at the age of twelve instead of delaying such training until community college. Forget the pandemic. That isn’t what wrecked the schools.

@@wall_to_wall I’m not sure I haven’t really been involved unless they have tried everything they could, then I start making phone calls. I know they have something on the computer that has helped guide them, but they did mention the Freshman advisors are useless, since they know more about classes than the advisor does. It was frustrating for a lot of parents and students. One is graduating in May, she had to take an extra class because the counselor/advisor didn’t tell her until now that one of her classes didn’t count and the other had to stay an extra year due to some missteps with the advisor when transiting from a comp degree to a math teacher path. They key to what you said is perfect…”HELP” plan their courses. The colleges need more like you. Good Luck with everything.
