the story about the rental dad hurt me in so many ways. imagine being a kid, seeing your dad with another kid, your dad ignoring you, then maybe finding out later in life that wasn't actually your dad but just some guy your mom hired ... that's actually fucked up. what kind of society shames single mothers so hard it seems like a good idea to rent a dad for your child..

I really like how you actually took the time to learn more about this profession and all the reasons people might rent someone in this capacity rather than just treating it like some kind of weird novelty. The story of the girl hiring a mom to have tea and shop with her was particularly sad and heartwarming at the same time. It’s an interesting peek into Japanese culture, and I think something more of us can relate to than we might realize elsewhere in the world.

Nah, therapy works in some cases. E.g. a woman who cannot give birth given time to spend with a baby - I imagine that would be either crushing or an amazing experience or even filling a void. I never knew my dad, it would be nice to have some time with someone pretending to be him, just for a while

  • @kristoffer8609

@@tally9542 Therapy can be about pretending everything is fine. If you have social anxiety, treatment is exposing yourself to more social situations and pretending you're okay. Until your body and mind actually starts accepting that it is. Of course this is not true most of the time but the fact that there is a service that helps people with this kind of thing (renting people) shows how society in Japan takes precedent over family when it comes to how people perceive you. It's kinda not even Japan exclusive. I know there's groups that try to connect volunteer stand in families with people who got disowned by their bio family for being LGBTQ. The social pressure may be less less and the dynamics very different. But people may still want someone to fill a parent role for a wedding or graduation ceremony. Heck, I've known someone who's parents completely cut off contact when he left their religious cult. There's many reasons why someone may have no more contact with their family but would still like a stand in sometimes. In my city there's even been initiatives to connect elderly people with families with young children who may have no grandparents or grandparents that live very far away. Keeps the elderly active and social and the children still get to experience having grandparents. And well, then there's sex workers and sugar babies essentially offering paid "girlfriend experiences". It takes different forms because of different social constructs. And outside of sex work I don't think making it a paid service would go over too well in the west. But there's some parallels.

Well it’s primarily due to being a part of the adult industry. Majority of parents often disown their children due to working in such a industry. Especially if it’s in a country like Japan. It’s not uncommon. Even in the U.S it’s a hard pill to swallow and honestly I believe the U.S is probably one of the few countries who would accept their daughter/son but even then it’s very difficult. Such a thing is not normalised with families. As we further get into the newer generation some families are a bit more accepting but nevertheless it’s still the same. Even in jokes it’s seen as an embarrassment to have a sibling or their relative work in pornography. I.e a lot of jokes are targeted toward having a daughter/son work in OF and such.

Does the mom rent the dad forever? Does he pretend to know about the children’s childhood when they get older? Does the actor pretend to love the mom? Does he leave every day? Like, how does this work without being traumatizing for the children? Everything else, though, makes sense.

I'm thinking that they probably didn't trust him enough to rent out a single woman to him (since he's a foreigner) so they made him rent a pair that can look out for each other. They mention in the video that they often try to restrict the possibilities of a rental actor being left alone one on one in an isolated or private environment. IE they require there to be 3 or more people present.

To be honest "mommy" issues aren't always what you expect. If someone doesn't have a mum, and wishes or feels like they need to experience having a mum, it's more about the caring nature of it. As much as we would like to think it's normal for everyone to have a mum, for a fraction of us ingrates out here, it is not. If I could even afford it, i'd rent a mum in a heartbeat.

With regards to rent a boyfriend I've seen deep dives on the why and on several instances it's been pressure. I know the service in China the company got guys in decent jobs and the interviewer asked the inevitable question. No it wasn't for that. The talents in question stated 9 out of 10 of the ladies that were women who's families had pressured them to do amazing in school, get an amazing job, get into various high prestigious things and then turned around..."when am I going to have grandchildren..." and took a serious load of pressure at family events. "Oh here is my boyfriend, he works at XYZ company in town Q...that's why you haven't seen him". Dude would be polite, say nice things about the daughter and be appropriately awkward/nervous to the dad. Family would immediately get off the girls ass about making babies. This example was given in about 3 countries I've seen on both sides of the equation as it were.

This whole "rent-a-____" is really strange on the surface, but has (along with some VERY odd moments) a really touching and thought-provoking side that I didn't think about before watching this video. I feel like Japan's "problems" within it's society NEED to be looked at, but it's so ingrained into the people and history that "rent-a-____" places are actually really important for many people to get a sense of some change in their life which they were missing or needed for various reasons. I think they are great and surprisingly important.
