I regret buying the DJI Ronin 2, here's why

Фильм және анимация

Upgrading from the RS3 Pro to the R2 was a rollercoaster that I was not expecting. Bigger cameras like the RED Raptor = bigger gimbals like the DJI R2, but that doesn't exactly mean you can operate it handheld right away. I'm used to the minimax. But to use the R2 with the Vario 5, I quickly realized this vest didn't fit me. Gimbal flex vests aren't very common in Toronto and I still feel quite discouraged about this purchase. I wasn't expecting it, but buying this meant I had to buy an even bigger ecosystem to support it. Back to the drawing board...

The R2 with the force pro is amazing for using with the R2 as a remote head. You amount a monitor with a feed and the force pro onto a tripod head of your choosing, and suddenly you are operating the head with all the smooth movements of using your tripod! Also don't get discouraged. When I first started DP'ing I thought I had to operate everything. It's so nice hiring an operator for certain jobs where gimbal operating is necessary, you don't need to be a specialist in everything, and having an R2 in your kit to rent out, isn't the worst. Best of luck!

I’m a dude, BUT we have a significantly better experience using the Ready rig (pro arms with Vega) with the Ronin 2 than the easy rig. The vest is rigid which leads me to believe that it probably works a little more universally better for women/smaller torsos than the more flexible vest with the Easyrig. For camera movement control, we use the DJI wireless transmission combo with the hi-brite monitor and Ronin 4D grips. It gives us an all in one solution for my first AC to pull focus and control camera movement when we need additional control over our typical PTF mode

People are suggesting Movi Pro but you’ll likely have the same challenges. They are similar gimbals in size and weight and are not best suited for single operators. RS4 Pro with the stronger torque motors put on a Tilta Ring is still probably your best option for now. Once you find the perfect vest it will help with both gimbal setups.

Look up Nick Salazar’s video testing Red V-Raptor on an RS4 Pro. With 25% more torque on the motors the combo works flawlessly.

Also for controlling the Ronin 2 you did not mention the “Ronin 2 Thumb Controller” from DJI which is $250. This is what lets you control pan, tilt, roll axis as a single operator by mounting the Thumb Controller on the handle. Similar to Tilta’s on the Tilta Ring for the RS3/RS4 Pro.

I sent you a DM about this, but yeah use the Ronin more as a remote head, it's an extremely versatile tool. Master Wheels are a game changer. Also you are missing probably the two vests that you absolutely require in order to use the Ronin in a single or dual op setting all day every day, that's the Tilta Armorman, and the Walter Klassen Slingshot. Both are more expensive than easy rigs, rental houses rarely carry the armorman, and WK vests are custom, but that also means they are more comfortable and being able to withstand higher payloads.

came here to write this. don't be disheartened! working with the wheels + operators and remote head style with the R2 on dollies/cranes etc is awesome. I've never enjoyed the easyrig for gimbal stuff but I have seen operators use the Antigravity cam with great success.

Nice video Nicole - As someone else in the comments mentioned, pay close attention to the Movi Pro. I can last all day on the movi pro and have used it for a load of one take music videos that I could never have done with the payload of the R2. It can also take heavier set ups than what the smaller gimbals allow - but not nearly as heavy as what the R2 can take. So it sounds like it could be the happy in-between that you're searching for :) Also wonder if you've spoken to Readyrig about your sizing issue as the Readyrig is much better at compensating for the up/down axis. I see way more footsteps in my footage when using the easyrig with a gimbal.

Yeah only downside is the axies don’t lock BUT definitely a better choice. Personally if I’m a smaller crew. We will just choose a smaller camera. For anything heavy go ergo rig for shoulder (they make a smaller one for women called center fit) and they have a extension that makes it similar to an ez rig without the overhead restraint. Not a gimbal but an option!

Nicole, I've experienced this also I currently use the ronin 2 with the Easy Rig. I noticed that the weight was on my upper body due to the Eazy Rig not being properly positioned. If you drop the Easy Rig to be strapped around your hips rather than your waist/ lower abdomen I think you'll find it more useful in balance and a lot less strain on your back etc. hope this helps.

It may be the vest, however I will say this. I used to own an Easyrig vario5 with Stabil arm and gimbal vest. I also owned the easytilt. I used all of this with the rs3 pro with the Tilta ring grip. All well under the payload. And I will never do this again lol. Overall the whole experience sucked. I practiced a lot for weeks and when it came time to shoot I was just not happy with the footage I was getting. Maybe I just really suck at operating gimbals (could very well be the case). All I know is that I’m never doing that again. Sold my vario5 too as it was overkill for the kind of work I do. I don’t spend more than a few minutes at a time handholding a camera and when I do it’s usually pretty light nowadays.

The perfect best for you is probably the antigravity cam. Quite out of your budget but there is one older unit left at B&H in the $7k range and far more bang for your buck than the top line easy rig. I could talk to you more about this option in a call if you’re interested. Are you going to NAB in April?

Did you try different size of vest ? There are Small / Medium / Large version of the Cine or Gimbal vest at Easyrig. I'm 1m70 and quite thin, and the S size changed everything and that's why I invested in one. The rental ones were all oversize and weren't good for me. I'm definitly on the same page as you regarding the R2... It's a remote head. DJI needs to do a MOVI PRO like, a beefed up RS4 PRO and not as a huge as a R2, but still have to connections and ease of use (onboard screens, joystick, recenter button etc).
